Onwenu taking snaps at DT

Submitted by Wee-Bey Brice on

Surprised at the lack of info to leak out of the submarine and reach the board but Big Mike posted a video to Facebook of him getting his first solo tackle.

Not surprised. He's a gigantic athlete, and the coaches have already tried out a number of players on both sides of the ball. They'll find the best place for him.

I really hope that was the third team. I saw the guard in front of Onwenu pull the tackle blocks the guy on Onwenu left side the center blocks the RT T leaving Onwenu free to bang into the pulling guard and knock him down too easily as he gets a free shot at the RB. Nobody blocked him. There was film there that said something about him having a fun summer where he blocks player after player on one on ones. They were trying everything and anything to get around him to the tackling dummy behind him to no avail. Personally his (Onwenu) offensive foot work was just plain phenominal no one got by him he just stood them all up or pushed them into tomorrow. The clip I believe everyone is raving about was called my first solo tackle.

Happy for Onwenu. Who is that pulling OL guy who just crumples down? It was like he was nothing. It will be a long year for our running backs if that's what we can expect.

Lots of three's on the field.

This looks to be our 3rd string out there:

- QB #7 Shane Morris (Did NOT take a snap in the live session Friday)

- FB #37 Bobby Hendersen (walk-on)

- RB #27 Joe Hewlett (walk-on)

- RT #72 Stephen Spanellis

- RG #55 David Dawson

- C #68 Andrew Vastardis (walk-on)

- LG #75 Jon Runyan

- TE #84 Sean McKeon

- NT #55 Garret Miller (walk-on)

- DT #50 Mike Onwenu

- SDE #2 Carlo Kemp

- SAM #10 Josh Uche

- MIKE #1 Elysee Mbem-Bosse

Hard not to dissect every bit of it, and yeah what is Mbem-Bosse doing?  Snap, sees someone releasing to block him from his left, stares that way and doesn't look back to the backfield at all.  Was just reading TTBs review on him, given mgofish had predicted him as an early contributor.  Said he was raw and didn't always read plays that well.  Yep.  But true freshman.

Bush is also 3rd team?  And he gets blown out of the play.

But yeah Onwenu looks great on that play.

They're really going to have to get the numbers thing worked out. It's one thing when it's a true freshman who will either redshirt or not play much, but for godsakes, Wheatley and O'Korn can't even be on the field together the way they have it now.

Maybe that's why they're possibly taking 7 OL in '17? If I'm Onwenu, I'm looking at recent drafts and comparing draft slots of NT vs OG....then I'm campaigning to play D. And if you've watched Vince Wilfork's career, you can imagine not too many people bugging about your weight either!

I think this is good news if he sticks there.  A couple of the guys coming in at DT (Paea and Hudson) supposedly have good upside at OL and it would be nice to have the luxury of playing those guys wherever they fit best, rather than having to put them at DT due to a lack of bodies.

the prospect of Onwenu switching to DT.  We're going to need good players next year when much of the OL leaves.  But if we could move someone else better suited for OL from the D-line, that would keep the depth chart from getting worse.

On one side of the ball you get to be coached by Drevno, if that doesn't work out you´ll be coached by Mattison.  Who´s got it better than this team´s big guys???
