I love The Onion, because their pieces are normally timely and funny.  This one would have been timely and funny if it were run ten years ago.

That is an impressively targeted piece.  I see the humor, sure, but the writer obviously has some UMich-specific knowledge.  (A few years ago many more people would be familiar with those names, but Ed Martin isn't exactly an of-the-moment name.)  I'd buy that (Spartan / Domer) as an explanation.  I'd feel less paranoid if they were trashing Kentucky and Calipari.

Edit: Scratch the Domer idea, maybe:

guys, in Madison, and its editorial offices were in Madison until a few years ago.  And if I am not mistaken, they now have a main office in New York City, but a lot of content gets written out of Chicago.

Chicago; home to thousands of Michigan graduate-professionals, and many thousands more graduate-professionals from other Big Ten schools, all of whom have a simmering hatred of Michigan, for having ruined their senior years when we busted up their winning seasons on the football field.

You beat me to it.

Yeah, I like The Onion; it's funny.  Humor of course needs to have a common context, and instead of picking on some better, current examples of basketball excess, they dredged up the stinking corpse of Martin-gate.  Probably because it is the context that the casual reader would get.

USC football could have been a lot funnier, more current, and would offer better comedic material.

And yeah, I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that this was written by some clever young Onion writer who went to Northwestern, Illinois or Wisconsin, etc.

The Onion is usually funny, but this piece was a bit lame. If they're going to target Michigan, I just wish it would be a funnier piece. Satire should be razor sharp. This was stale, fetid and mushy.

Up next for the Onion...Clinton/intern jokes.

I mean, I don't mind the shot.  But, half the people reading their stuff probably were 2 when Webber was around...
