One mans recruiting projections (The move out edition)

Submitted by JDVan on

Recent commits to the DE position have had me re-evaluate my outlook on this class. As I would rather procrastinate then move out of my apartment from school here is my boredom. Now I currently have our scholarship number at 18 assuming a DJ Williamson transfer. I would imagine the final number to reach in the 20-22 area with transfers from this spring and after the season before signing day. Here is my ideal/realistic guess and hopes:

QB: (0) Kiel or none. I'd bet he heads somewhere else and here’s hoping we land Morris next year.

RB: (1) Dunn or none, but we'll mark the number at one figuring someone in the mix. Coach Hoke has stated an affinity towards grabbing a RB in every class.

FB: (0)

WR: (1-2) Burbridge would be my guess here or going for (cross your fingers) the two'fer with Washington/Stanford teammate deal.

TE: (3) Penciling in Thompson even with the delay to join Funchess and Williams.

OL: (5) Coaches have stated they will take six but with a possible swing man in Williams I would like to use five to free up more scholarships. Penciling in Diamond to nab the 3rd spot, however, too many options for me to give a guess at the other 2 slots. Hopefully, we limit acceptance at this point and pursue the Zac Banner types.

DE: (4-5) Pencil in Brown/Godin/Mario. I think the coaching staff with take 4 and heavily pursue Wormley. Here's where it gets interesting... With Washington/Stanford stating they are attending a school together and we have offered both I say swing for the fences.

DT: (2-3) My hope and realistic approach is Pipkens/Day with an outside shot of Jaleel Johnson/O'Brien/ late emergence.

LB: (4) Already locked out.

CB/S: (2) Solidify Cass Tech by nabbing Richardson and S/CB possibility by the way of Morgan.

Assuming we hit the numbers I listed and pull the unlikely Washington/Stanford this would put our total at the limit of 25. As previously stated, I see the final class at around 22 scholarships so we’ll assume this number. Removing three (4 DE’s, 1 WR, and 2 DT’s) seems likely.

This was just something to waste time and give my best guesses as opposed to packing my apartment to leave school. We’ll see in February if this is anything near the class (probably not).

EDIT: Whoops on edition. Also, if taking 5 DE's I am open to Pittman, Strobel, Spence, etc... instead of Washington. The WR/DE teammate combo just provided a way to solve both needs.

This is exactly what I've been thinking about.  I think we need Wormley in this class.  I also think that our chances of Washington/Stanford are in serious jeopardy now.  My opinion is that we go hard after Burbridge and hope his grade issues work out (people seem optimistic).  And as for QB and RB, that we go big or wait until 2013.

I agree with Diggs being a pipe dream. Not so sure about Brown. I know that he said that the Michigan offer was a big deal to him. There hasn't been much talk coming from Brown on where he stands with recruiting. The last thing I heard was that he went to VT with Diggs.

From what I understand it’s a possibility but not so much a package deal between them. Also, since stating Michigan was the "offer" Brown has shown about zero interest since. Although, I have no idea if it’s the coaches laying off or recruit or playing close to the vest. Either way at this point a UM commitment seems highly unlikely and outside the purpose of this list as "possible/realistic" commitments.

P.S. so is the 5 DE's was just a thought for the package deal. Odds are the class will feature 4 DE's with attrition for the 4th DE scholarship. I am actually just against the Mario scholarship at this point. With Washington, Pittman, Strobel, Spence, Wormley... having mild to serious interest a commitment from Mario is losing on one of these more talented prospects. Even with tOSU being able to accept 2-3 of them it leaves 2-3 high end four stars for UM before Mario. I will probably be negged for this comment but any talent evaluator would agree that list is an echelon above Mario.

You really really need to recruit a quarterback every year.  Remember that one time Sheridan started?  That sucked.

Other than that, nice list.

I disagree. I would not waste a scholarship on a 2 star QB this year with the immense DL talent in the Midwest. Now if you want to debate offering Applebee, Kelly, etc... as 3-stars with a large upside sure I'm ok with that. Taking a QB because he's a QB is not a reason to accept a player in my eyes.

Couldn't we just get a QB to walk on, then?
While seeing Sheridan run the offense was enough to gouge out one's eyes, I don't think we're in immediate danger of that happening again.  We have 1-2 more years of Denard, hopefully 3-4 years of Gardner, and likely 4 years of Bellomy.   Not to mention swinging for the fences for a 2013 QB.  When would anything less than a 3 star have a chance to start, even when factoring in injuries?

O'Connor and Appleby both sound like they're on par with Bellomy as prospects and with only 3 QB's on the roster this year getting one is a must no matter what.  If it's a guy who needs time to develop and is comfortable with the idea of waiting to get a chance to start I am all for it.

Sorry to break it to you, but all of your odd projections are inherently wrong.  All of our commits will be in 2's this year.  Otherwise interesting take on recruiting.

...nothing yet.

I'm trying to find top 5's for some of these kids.  My spreadsheet doesn't get accurate until then and is only about 60% at that.  I did get Ojemediu and a few others.  Completely blew it on the Qb that went Auburn, but I cannot account for boo$ters.

Having said that, I have a feeling we're gonna get Maty Mauk.

wouldnt call it supposedly, he is....his brother played for Kelly @ Cincy so high rated QB younger brother has a 99% chance to land at high profile ND.

We have had a great start to this recruiting season.  But we have yet to land an Ohio kid with an OSU offer.  This was a major discussion point during the RR era.  Of course, I am thrilled that we are blowing MSU out of the water.  But to get serious in Ohio -- we need Wormley and crew.

At first I thought em0 had returned, but since there is no depth chart, I was mistaken

Nice work, but as others have pointed out, we will be taking a QB this year. Whether he is highly rated or not is another story but we definitley will be taking one. No more Sherideath for this program please.

This is a reasonable and exciting list you put together, thanks for sharing. Also, thank you for bringing your extremely productive procrastination talents here!

There could be at least one more scholly opening up, and there may be even a few more.  I don't think we'll really know how many schollies are available for a few more weeks.  There are a couple of logjams at positions where a few players are lost in the shuffle; I expect some movement soon.

JDVan

Were currently at 18 (assuming DJ) I would suspect a lot more than just one scholarship. Hence the 22 projection.

I don't think we will know how many "schollies" will be available until close to signing day. I expect transfers to take place during spring and after the season. What is happening in "a few more weeks" during the dead period where players will jump ship and make the number clear?

I think we get standifer instead of Morgan, but overall...well done. I can see us getting another DE besides Wormley and push Godin inside. I also think we should not pursue Thompson and use the schollie somewhere else

I have a feeling your right about Standifer. I think he is more incline to commit first and cause Morgan to be out. I just find Morgan to be more talented. Also, Thompson is a little more talented than Funchess IMO and would like him to be apart of this class. Williams may grow to big for the position so I think Thompson is a must.

From his film I really enjoyed his size, zone cover ability, and smarts. Outside of that I could not give you an extensive break down on man coverage or more. Hopefully Magnus sees this... Also, his speed looked adequate but not quite a burner.

My only problem is outside of TomVH's interview with his coach I have not felt the serious interest to see him committing in time to grab one of the 2-3 secondary scholarships before the slots are filled. Why I see Morgan or Standifer with the CB/S versatility taking the scholarship.

I'd say that we need at the very least 2 WRs in this class, we lose Stonum (ugh), Hemingway and Odoms at the end of the year and Stokes (I really hate that he didn't redshirt his freshman year) and Roundtree after 2012, after moving Miller to TE (this might get reversed I'd imagine) and having lost Williamson plus not taking a WR last year we'll be very thin by 2013 if we don't take at least a couple WRs this year, I can only think of Jerald Robinson as a wideout, Jeremy Jackson also as a wideout and maybe Dileo as our slot
