Big surprise in the men's soccer tournament - Spain is already eliminated after losing its first two group-stage matches (to Japan and Honduras, respectively).  It's not the same squad that won the Euro, of course (although Alba is on it), but they have a lot of young talent and were expected to be a strong medal contender.  Brazil is now the heavy favorite.

I don't shoot skeet, but anyone can recognize this kind of accomplishment.

And she's only 33; she could win another 5 Olympics.  By the way, does that mean she won her first medal at the age of 13?

Not that I am a shooting expert but there would seem almost no upper age bound on it.  I mean does it really require strength or speed or flexibility or anything that goes south with age?  I don't mean to say it doesn't take skill, just not skills that would decline with age.

and consider myself a pretty good skeet shooter. Nowhere near world class, but I've broken 100 in a row several times.

And I routinely lose to guys in their 60's.

Trap's even worse.  I've seen older guys with oxygen tanks break 50 or more in a row.

I love guns...

coordination. At some point, there will be a drop-off.

I've shot 100 straight in American Skeet (far removed from the difficulty of International Skeet). Forgetting what it takes to hit a target, it is very, very easy to miss. She shoots 500-1000 rounds daily, and I suspect that is what it takes to give her the mental edge, not a physical edge. At some point, she isn't going to want to lift and swing a 10 pound gun that many times, and her shoulder is going to begin complaining - she has felt the recoil of over 3,000,000 12 gauge target loads. When that happens, she loses the mental edge, and will become a mere mortal.

Thanks to Lil Jon and the East Side Boyz, I cannot help but giggle a little whenever I read about skeet shooting...I will now go hang my head in shame

Technically not a spoiler... NBC already talked about it and apparently chose not to feature it.

But I appreciate the OP erring ont he side of caution.  You sir, are no jackass.

Did anyone else watch the Spain-Honduras game?  The Spanish acted like a bunch of children who weren't getting their way.  Terrible national display really, I'd be embarassed if an American behaved in such an immature manner.

The fine gentleman who started the other spoiler thread has been, for the moment, banhammered. Banhammed? Banhammerered? Eh, unimportant.

Unintentional spoilers still cost you your points. Intentional spoilers will cost you your eternal soul ability to post .

Wife was having me look up some info on Kyla Ross, and of course Gymnastic results are all over the fact that Michigan's Jordyn Wieber didn't make the all around final, because she was behind two of her teammates?!? Is that the upset of these young Olympics?

with that. I lack the knowledge to really speak one way or another. It wil be interesting to see how it unfolds. I find it odd that the rule has stood for so long, and now people are up in arms. Has winning for the chosen one been that clear-cut all these years, or is this just the result of some real talent beyond the two-deep?

Even if the best falters they're usually good enough to qualify, just like Wieber was, but don't have two teammates in front of them. Even in '96 was there 3 teammates who would have qualified? To me it DOES seem kinda stupid because at the Olympics you'd think you want your best no matter what. I mean one country can sweep the medal stand in other events, why not this one? But I think complaining too much about something that has always been this way is bad form, even if it's stupid. Edit: actually it's a fairly new rule. Before 2004 3 could get in. Even that's kinda dumb, but more unlikely to be a problem. So it's not like they've been doing it forever. But not the first time any sport with judges is ass-backwards.

Did Ryan Lochte just get torched? Given a decent lead and he not only gives it up, but he isn't even close. And all he can say after is "the 100 isn't my event?" Well, then, why are you swimming the relay? Could have left Lezak in. Can't win them all, but if you want to be the "Phelps of 2012" you can have all 3 other legs hold the lead by a sizable margin and then blow it.

Can I just say that I'm crazy happy that Brendan Hansen finally beat Kosuke Kitajima and was also able to medal? I know he didn't get gold, but his goal for the past few Olympics was basically to just beat Kitajima and he did just that.  Crazy that Kitajima only got 5th.

I think Lochte gave it all he got. But the French anchor was just that much faster.  So he didn't so much blow it as the French just won it. Saying that the 100 isn't his thing doesn't really help though. Why even agree to do the race?

NBC sports really needs to stop interviewing people after a "personal failure".  I think the audience had a pretty good idea of what Wieber was thinking/feeling without an interview. Come on.

Watching gymnastics is just brutal sometimes, I feel so bad for those girls. They seem on the verge of tears all the time and even when things go well, it's more relief than happiness. It's gotta be so tough to be "teammates" on one hand, yet know you're competing against them at the same time. The top two per team rule doesn't help the situation, but I guess the sport has always been pretty lopsided so they don't want two or three teams dominating the finals and pushing everyone else out. Since anyone can falter, it would give them an unfair advantage and prevent cinderella stories where someone comes out of nowhere and just has a special performance.

Man, I did not see the French chasing down Lochte like that in the relay. After Phelps's turn, I thought it was in the bag. I haven't seen the splits, but the announcers said his time was in line with what he's capable of. So, the French guy must've swam an incredible last leg. Even so, you gotta wonder if they should have had Lezak anchor again.

Re: Beach volleyball... cold weather and bikinis, I have no problem with that. :)
