Olympic Quarter Final Hockey Thread

Submitted by mrider on
Well today is a big day for hockey, Americans vs. Swiss and the game of the tourny Canada vs Russia. Obviously the Americans should win, but the Swiss are pesky. Canada looked good last night, so we shall see if it continues vs. the Ruskies. Anyway thread to discuss.

They looked good against Germany. Are there even any NHL players from Germany? I was actually surprised to see Germany even had a hockey team lol. Canada didn't just win - it was a blowout. You are right though - the Swiss are a scrappy bunch.

Back in the day, Germany featured Olaf Kolzig (ex-Capitals goalie) and Uwe Krupp, whose name is profanity to most Wings fans - he of the 4-year, $16mm deal signing him away from the Avalanche, then having him play 40 games for the Wings after a back injury severe enough to prevent him playing hockey, but not severe enough to prevent him from racing sled dogs. I have no idea what Germany's got these days.

Showed so much more heart than the Czechs did last night and I was really hoping for them to pull off the upset but unfortunately they came up short in OT. But their goalie was incredible in the third and really saved the game for them to get the tie. I'm looking forward to seeing the USA Swiss game and I can't wait for Russia vs Canada! I'm feeling an OT for this game there is so much talent and skill on both rosters its going to be great to watch!

You look at the draw and anything short of Silver for the USA could be a let down. They really put themselves in good position to make a nice run. From what I understand (didn't see the game) Hiller was very shaky yesterday with not a whole lot of offense generated by Belarus. He won't have that luxury today. The real question is: How many does Raffi get today?

This game is going to be pretty epic with Ovechkin and Crosby matchup. I'm looking forward to see world class hockey being played by both teams. USA/Swiss, it's a rematch. USA should win but the fact that it's a rematch will make it only harder for USA to beat the same team twice especially when Swiss has Hiller, manning in front of the net.

I wont be able to participate in any open threads during the US game. Got it on the DVR, cant watch until the closing bell sounds at work. But, if people want some reading material, I'll pimp my own blog. Check out the JCB. I have a full post on today's game. GO USA It's also the 30th anniversary of the Americans clinching the gold against Finland in 1980. Cant lose with that kind of historic karma, right?

Maybe people missed my late night post in the "Switzerland Tomorrow" thread, but the TV Listings on the NBC Olympics site still show only 3-5 PM Eastern blocked out on NBC for the game. They're not really going to switch away, are they?!?!? The next channel with Olympic programming is MSNBC at 5 PM, marked for curling. WTF?!?!
