Old "Michigan Stadium" letters

Submitted by UM4ME on

I just got enough points to post on the board and I wanted to see what everyone thought about this.

The old "Michigan Stadium" letters from the top of the press box have surfaced (sorry for the bad picture quality):

They are on the east side of the concourse at midfield in the middle of beams above the portals.

Wasn't there a discussion about this on the board a few weeks ago? I was surprised how big they were up close. Do you think this is a permanent location?

That's where I was! How did I miss that!

I like it, but I'm not sure those are the originals. If they are, they should be ashamed of themselves for painting them blue. It kind of wrecks the originality and novelty of them.

EDIT: My bad. In light of the next high-level post below, it has come to my attention there was a set on the back side that were in fact blue:

So where, then, is the maize set?

I think the east sideline concourse is a good place, because those of us on the eastern side, Sections 40-4, used to look up at those letters throughout the games.

It's a good location. As an old-timer at the Stadium, I approve, wholeheartedly.

I would have known myself except that today, in honor of my grandfather who used to room with Old Man Yost (nobody, except perhaps Mrs. Yost, called him anything but "Old Man Yost"), who took me to my first Spring Game in the old Press Box in 1967, I sat in Section 23, instead of my customary seats in Section 1.

I asked about this today on my tour of the premium seats - which, by the way, were God-damned amazing.

Anyway: The maize letters are still in storage for now and they're deciding what to do with them. They're considering auctioning them off for Charity. They probably won't be put up anywhere because the art deco style doesn't match the new construction.
