Oklahoma shelled out $325,000 for Jerry Montgomery

Submitted by Leaders And Best on

Football salaries were released today for Oklahoma when they went for approval to Board of Regents. Jerry Montgomery got a pretty sizable deal making $325,000 per year--making him the highest paid non-coordinator assistant on the staff (4th highest behind Mike Stoops, Josh Heupel, and Jay Norvell)

That's an order of magnitude higher than what I get paid to teach classes at UM. No assistant is worth that.

No offense, but you're considerably more expendable to the university than a football assistant coach is.  You could quit your job today and be replaced by a crappier instructor and still, the students would receive a University of Michigan education.  The university's academic reputation is not dependent on your personal performance.  Conversely, its athletic reputation is directly dependent on the performance of its coaches.

First, I should have said position coach. I think Mattison is worth that. But no position coach is, especially not at a position where the head coach and defensive coordinator also focus. All you would-be professors of economics can look at the market and get back to me about the market value of a third defensive line coach.

Second, I'm not a professor, or I'd be making 2-8 times what I currently make. But as far as professors go, it is nearly 5 times what some professors in my department make.

Third, my classes this term generate about 6 times my salary in revenue to the University. Anybody wanna claim that Montgomery personally adds nearly $2m in value?

I'm pleased to see some posters above evidencing some perspective, but I have nothing else to say that isn't overtly political. The AD payscale will come crashing back to Earth when O'Bannon wins anyway.

After watching this

I'd say his services were badly needed at OU. Mattison would have a fit if this happened here

I'm happy with our pickup in Roy Williams. Montgomery was great for this program, especially in his recruiting efforts, but with Hoke and Mattison personally coaching the defensive line, there won't be any drop off whatsoever.

I put my full faith in a man who presided over Ray Lewis and Ed Reed.

Assistant coaches are making way more than ever these days...most mid level to good programs pay over 6 figures and the bigger programs are paying all over 200k.  Michigan pays over 200k as well.... those coaches work very hard and their pay scale has risen quickly recently.  I wouldnt pay 300K for Montgomery though... he is being overpaid and is probably why he left.

There was a USA Today article late last year, I believe, which stated that assistant pay throughout FBS football actually has gone up about 30% in the last three years alone, but there is also the consideration of conference / team average pay for assistants. The salaries of Borges and Mattison aside, I think that Montgomery was more or less at the average of Michigan assistants (I actually think that their salaries aren't too different, but I could be wrong). The salary pools of most Big Ten teams are not traditionally that large for assistants either, so I imagine that his $205,000 was probably near the conference average for assistants.

By moving to Oklahoma, in the Big 12 where the average pay of an assistant is about $290,000, he ends up still making well above the mean salary. It's not a bad deal and I wouldn't blame Montgomery for seeking greener pastures quite literally. I also believe, as others do, that Roy Manning is an excellent hire for Michigan as a replacement.

Great job, Jerry!  You can't blame a dude for taking a $120,000 pay raise.

That being said, I think recruiting will be just fine not necessarily because of Mr. Manning but because it is obvious that Coach Hoke places a priority on top recruits.  We won't get everyone we want (whether that be five star recruits or assistant coaches), but we can be sure that the football program is going after the best talent with more than enough resources to do so.

Bringing in new assistants can be very helpful for both parties. Jerry continues evolving as a coach maybe getting a bigger role. Manning comes in with new ideas and great passion. It can help from a creative aspect.

Thank you Jerry for your time here.  I love Roy.  I hope we pay our assistants top dollar.  Michigan is always about the leaders and best and should be compensated for it.  I have some issues going forward though.  It will be diffcult to keep ticket prices relatively stable and still be able to pay our assistants as much as we should.  I hate advertising but it may be a necessary evil.  But how far?

I wish Montgomery the best of luck in his new job.  He's making a lot more money and is closer to home. He had no long term ties to Michigan, so the move is not surprising at all.  I don't doubt his abilities, but he was hardly irreplaceable on the Michigan staff. He was definitely a part of Michigan's success, but he also benefited from being surrounded by a great coaching staff.

I don't think we want to get into biddng wars over position coaches.  If Oklahoma wants to overpay a guy to lure him away from Michigan, good for Jerry Montgomery.  Go make your bones at OU, prove yourself capable of handling a DC role and we'll bring you back when Mattison is ready to hang them up.

Meanwhile, is Roy Manning as incompetent as Tony Gibson?  No?  OK, I think we'll be fine.

"Meanwhile, is Roy Manning as incompetent as Tony Gibson?"

I think this question is a little bit misleading.  There's no evidence that he's incompetent at all.  In his last two years, he was an assistant OL coach/GA at Michigan and the running backs coach at Cincinnati.  In his season at Michigan, the offensive line allowed very few sacks and paved the way for two 1,000-yard rushers (Toussaint, Robinson).  In his season at Cincinnati, George Winn had one of the best rushing seasons in Bearcats history (1,334 yards, 13 touchdowns).  His positions have been OUTSTANDING for the past two years.

Obviously, we can't give all the credit to Manning because other factors were involved (talent, Darrell Funk, Butch Jones, etc.), but there's evidence that Manning is VERY competent.

Well, the question was meant rhetorically and it was also meant to be complimentary to Roy Manning.  Apparently I failed, FAILED, in both endeavours.  Mea culpa.

2nd try:

Am I concerned with Roy Manning taking over for Jerry Montgomery?  I know almost nothing about Manning's performance prior to his ascending to his current assignment, but I know he is NOT Tony Gibson, therefore I am going to assume with utmost confidence that he will perform more than adequately.

By not matching we plant a coaching tree and Montgomery learns from a pretty good program. You need to let people go to get the most from them sometimes. This is where the magic happens. Hopefully Mattison can plant as many seeds as possible until he's done. If he does we are going to see benefits for years to come.

But the more I think about it....why would you take the last staff addition, who was coaching maybe half a position, and make him your 4th highest paid coach? More power to Montgomery for getting it, and he IS a good coach..but what in his resume is worth upsetting your established coaches by bringing him in at that much higher a salary than them (when, without looking up the Okie staff website, probably have some who have more established careers than him)?
