Ohio's Matta gets pay raise to $3.2 million

Ohio State coach Thad Matta has agreed to a revised contract that will give him a 10 percent increase to more than $3.2 million annually and includes academic bonuses and more stringent wording about NCAA violations.

With years he had already earned through job performance, the five-time Big Ten champion coach will be under contract through July 2019.

Matta's first eight Ohio State teams have each won at least 20 games and are 13-4 this season and ranked No. 14. He has a record of 234-69 with the Buckeyes after taking over a team that was on probation.

"One of the things I'm most proud of is what we've built here, from where we started," he said. "You look at what we've been able to accomplish, I'm a lot more proud of that than I am of a contract. I feel as blessed as I can be to be at Ohio State. I love this university. I'm extremely grateful in terms of what they have allowed me to do and how they've taken care of me."

Is that sarcastic?  Because OSU has a lot of guys in the NBA.  Maybe no All-Stars, but Evan Turner, Mike Conley, Kosta Koufos, Jared Sullinger, and Daequan Cook are all solid NBA players.  That's a lot more than almost any other school has.

Not to mention doing it all at a school and in a state where most people don't really care about basketball.

Cause, I'm just sayin', dude still looks like a goblin and all goblins are evil.  Even the Harry Potter ones, kinda.

You probably think every team besides Michigan has recruiting violations.

Actually, I think every team (Michigan included) commits NCAA violations.  It's basically impossible not to.  It's a matter of degree.  Some venture further into the gray areas (and beyond) than others.

Regarding Matta, the college basketball recruiting circuit is beyond dirty and it's pretty tough to wade in there and land HS All-Americans on annual basis while staying clean.

He hasn't done it the "right way".  He's spefically done it the wrong way.  I won't reveal my source (I will say that my source is a former B1G coach), but Matta is known to be one of the dirtier coaches in the game.  Large payments/gifts (as far as I've been told) aren't involved, but players/reps receive a steady drip of payments throughout the recruiting process.

The way it works (and it's a common request among top-20 type recruits) is that a family member or "representative" of a recruit will demand a small amount of money (say $500) for the kid to read a letter.  Another little chunk to answer a phone call.  Another (larger) payment to take a visit.  The higher level of involvment, the higher the required payment (i.e. official visits are much more expensive than taking a phone call).

There's a reason you don't find other coaches praising the saintly Thad Matta.  In good news, Michigan is not involved in any such "payment plans" and is known to refuse to recruit any kids who demand it.

OSU needs to bump up his budget, because his recruiting has been mediocre the last couple of years.  He keeps getting out bid by Indiana and MSU.

Why? 95% of his best players are from Ohio. And the remaining 5% are from Indiana where he has strong ties (former Butler player/coach). He isn't pulling kids from California, Florida, New York, etc. No one he managed to attract was a head scratcher?

95%, eh?  You no do math good.  In the 2014 class, 50% are from not Ohio/Indiana (Illinois).  In the 2013 class, 50% are also from not Ohio/Indiana (Maryland).  In 2012, your only recruit (100%, in case you were wondering) was from Nevada.  In the 2011 class, 5 out of 5 of your recruits (still 100%) are from not Ohio/Indiana (Michigan, Michigan, Illinois, New Jersey, Georgia).  2010 was the last time OSU had even a simple majority (>50%) from Ohio/indiana, where 5 out of 6 were from those two states (4 Ohio, 1 Indiana), which comes to 83%, rounded.

Over that amount of time, OSU recruited 16 players, 6 who were form Ohio, 1 from Indiana and 9 from not Ohio/Indiana.  So by 95%, you really meant 37.5%, right?  Saying 5% were from Indiana was actually pretty close though.

I know math is hard, man, but not that hard.

Best players. Best. As in top ones who would be able to play anywhere. Oden, Conley, Thomas are Indiana. Mullins, Kofus, Sullinger, Buford, Craft, Diebler, Lighty are all Ohio kids. Evan Turner was really the lone stud OSU has had outside that footprint. We don't pull UK type out of staters is my point. It's very much a regional program.

During the last NCAA Tournament, USA Today listed the salaries (if available) of the coaches for all of the 68 teams in the tournament, and the data for six Big Ten teams was available. This includes Matta, of course, and here is how is updated information would compare to selected coaches in the conference assuming the 10% is tacked onto his base pay. Granted, it's an estimate without other information readily available.
