According to cleveland.com, Ohio's class is at their limit unless Urban does his best Saban impression in spring practice. Now, this can only help us with Reeves, but again, Meyer is from the SEC, so don't expect too much from him.
Ohio's Class is full
Meyer has a phone call scheduled with Saban for later this afternoon
The NCAA mandated 3 per year
reads (copy available here):
3. Limit total grants-in-aid in the sport of football to 82 for each of the 2012-13,
2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years. [NOTE: The institution had proposed a
reduction in the number of initial scholarships awarded in the sport of football by
a total of five spread over the 2012-13, 2013-14, and 2014-15 academic years.]
It's a hard and fast 82 each of the 3 years, not loading up with 85 the first year and then dropping to 81 and 80 the next two years.
They will find room for Reeves and Dodson.
this suddenly got incredibly interesting w/ an ohio paper calling them out. nice find OP.
i wonder if dodson, reeves, et. al realize this.
espnus talking heads last night were saying he'd probably end up there so if he can't that's goooooodd
The Scout predictions have Neal going to Arizona FWIW. And comparing the signing day predictions among ESPN,Rivals, and Scout, ESPN is laughably awful.
RODRIGUEZ UPDATE RODRIGUEZ UPDATE DIE DIE DIE!!!
There's at least one non-qualifier in his list (Roger Lewis), plus some other expected attrition (transfers, 5th year seniors, Berry, medicals, etc.).
I student taught Roger Lewis several years ago. And...yeeeeahhhhh.
Did not really oversign when he was at Florida, to the best of my knowledge. Also supposedly Richt is clean. Miles and Saban are the masters of the oversigning.
The only article on oversigning.com with an Urban Meyer tag is this one. Keep in mind one of the two cut was cut because he hit a girl, so that's a legit cut (although suspect since firing an AK-47 in downtown Gainesville just gets you in mild trouble if you're a stud).
Houston Nutt should definitely be added to your list
Petrino and Chizik do it too and both love it. They do it to park kids at JUCO.
Wasn't Nutt's biggest class at Ole Miss something like 35 signees? Crazy stuff.
and yet Ole Miss sucks
The Ole Miss situation is/was a little different than the Bama and LSU stuff people complain about. The Tide and Tigers are signing guys knowing full well that to make room for them under the 85 scholarship limit, someone currently on the team will likely have to be forced to transfer or accept the BS medical waiver.
The Rebs were signing huge classes knowing full well that half the guys in the class probably couldn't read and wouldn't be able to qualify anyway. They essentially had to sign 35 if they had any hopes of actually enrolling 25 (or fewer) guys when fall camp rolled around. Without oversigning they would have been way under the 85 scholarship limit.
I think the main reason why Meyer didn't oversign while he was at Florida is because his boss was strongly against oversigning. Both presidents at Georgia and Florida have publicly spoken out against the practice of oversigning.
It will be interesting to see what Urban does at ohio. Without pressure from his boss I get the feeling that we will see the Urban use some of the SEC tactics.
That's a good point, I guess I always thought that Urbs was against oversigning, but now that I think of it, I've never heard him speak out against it. It was always the AD. It also occurred to me that culturally, OSU seems to have a lot more in common with the SEC than the B1G, except geography I suppose. And by culturally, I mean shitty academics and a win-at-all-costs mentality
Hate on OSU all you want, but saying they have "shitty academics" that alines them more with the SEC than the Big Ten is ignorant, and undermines anything else you have to say. They are exactly middle of the road in the Big Ten in academic rankings.
The academic top half of the B1G uses "aligns," while the bottom half favors "alines."
Gambrell beat his pregnant girlfriend (allegedly).
Clarke got an OVI the night after Urban laid down ground rules like "No OVIs while you're at Ohio State." He'd already been on thin ice for the airsoft incident last fall.
I read one of there current commits is taking an offical to ohio (NTO) yeahh.. I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say it has something to do with meyer wanting his guys over the guys fickell recruited.. pure speculation though
Roger Lewis is the man you are talking about, and he will not be able to qualify academically for the Big Ten. OSU told him to go to prep school (Fork Union) for a year, with a guaranteed spot in the 2013 class. He will likely choose Ohio U. - where he will still be able to enroll even if he does not qualify for NCAA because of the laxer rules in the MAC. I can't really blame him.
He's going to start pulling scholarships, or making players lives so miserable, that they leave on their own accord.
Did anyone notice that it said Armani Reeves was visiting Ohio this weekend? That ain't good.
I read that as Stefon Diggs is visiting this weekend.
Not Reeves. It's Diggs:
Massachusetts cornerback Armani Reeves and Florida receiver Stefon Diggs, who is visiting Ohio State this weekend, are among the potential additions.
that it says FL receiver since he is from MD.
This is only necessary because Oxfordians are known for putting orange juice (i.e. marmalade) on their toast. Here the meaning is communicated either way.
You don't actually need the second comma. The meaning is the same in both sentences. You do not need the final comma in a list. Consider "I had eggs, toast, orange juice, and pineapple." You can also put "I had eggs, toast, orange juice and pineapple." Both are correct and mean the same thing.
Does anyone know Diggs' leanings? I see he's visited Auburn, Cal, Fla, and OSU.
I know OSU having the last visit could be big, but I don't think they were on his radar until Urban came to town.
Reeves is NOT. Diggs is visiting this weekend.
It is Diggs that is scheduled to visit. Not Reeves.
I'm all but certain that Berry will be gone soon, and they will most likely have a bit more attrition to free up the last few schollies. I wouldn't look too deeply into this article, Ohio is gonna make room for, "Urban's guys".
That would not be good...
It is okay. Pee Wee already knows how to force fumbles from him.
Florida was 10th in the SEC in the number of recruits they signed while Meyer was there.
You say Ohio's class is full. I say it's 0% empty.
My Ohio buddies say Urbie has the team doing workouts at 5am with trashcans set up azll over the place and he runs them until they puke. Hes trying to get kids to leave that he doesnt want.
maybe one of their VHT guys pulls a justin turner
There's no doubt he is doing this to get people to quit that aren't fully committed. But it's not like he's only forcing below average players to go through these workouts. His goal here isn't to weed out unwanted players -- it's to weed out players that aren't 110% committed to the the new system - whether they be studs or scrubs.
I'm pretty sure that has nothing to do with Diggs visiting this weekend. This of course is after years of Ohio fans complainging about Meyer's dirty recruiting after he took them to the wood shed in 2006.
I love the second part of this comment. How fun would it be to compare Ohio State's fans' views of Meyer before and after the hire?
early enrollees as 2011 commits? I thought that the article mentioned this without doing the math.
They're up against the 82 and not the yearly 25 so it doesn't matter. If you knew that and were just wondering, sorry and I don't know.
I didn't get that answer when I read the article. Thanks.
Charlie Weis was full from the pancake social with Brian Orakpo but that didnt stop him from wiping out the chinese buffet around the corner.
