Because, of course.

Gulf of Tonkin, the USS Maine, Fort Sumter, Concord and Lexington, and so on. People do get rich in war. That's what happens when you need to field and feed armies, navies, and air forces.

Yeah, it's disturbing.
On the other hand, every school should have a de-weaponized herkimer battle jitney.

when used properly to describe someone with slowed/retarded mental capabilities.
What is offensive is its use as a pejorative to describe stupidity in neurotypical individuals or in situations. Retarded individuals don't deserve that comparison.
The only difference between "mentally challenged" and "retarded" is that "mentally challenged" has yet to become a common slur.

No doubt, a vehicle like this is overkill in the extreme. It's also a free surplus vehicle. I imagine we'll see a lot surplus hardware like this rotate it's way into a civilian venue as our armed forces pull out of Iraq and Afghanistan.

How long until we get one of these to patrol up and down the Homeland Security-mandated closed section of Main Street next to the stadium during the game?

"Ohio State police tell the Lantern they’ll remove the gun turret from the vehicle before deploying the vehicle on campus."
Well, sometimes we have to make concessions, I suppose....and it was free off the shelf, as it were.

I love that line as well. Like, they're walking out of the door after they're handed the keys, looking at that turrent and hoping nobody says anything when, just within earshot, the OSU attorney tells them they have to disarm it.

Boston bombing?
October 2nd, 2013 at 12:58 PM ^
An MRAP vehicle is designed to survive an IED blast equivalent to several pounds of TNT. I see the virtue of repurposing surplus military hardware for civilian use, but make no mistake, a vehicle like this is massive overkill against a threat like what was used in Boston.

and your behavior requires NCAA attention and a military donation of a battlefield-tested vehicle, and the point of the donation is to ensure better crowd control, then you might have a problem with your fan base.
It is interesting that over time, there are periodic stories of danger about mingling with members of rival fan bases in their home towns on game days, but none of these stories ever imply the type of worrisome concern that folks from Columbus have demonstrated over time by their rabid behavior. What police force in any college town in America currently needs this kind of military vehicle to help keep the peace because its unpredictable fan base necessitates it?
I mean, this isn't about dotting the I in OHIO. This is about being a danger to others and requiring forceful monitoring. If you deny this is so, then explain why this donation is made, to quell what behavior, exactly?

Not sure I understand any of this. If a bomb were to go off, wouldn't it only protect the police officers who are manning the vehicle, and not the hundreds of civilians wandering around? Seems the best way to prevent a bombing would be surveillance and having more officers walk the crowd and watch for suspicious behavior, not sit stationary behind a massive shield of armor and bulletproof glass.
