Ohio State to hire Schiano

Submitted by DCGrad on

According to Schefter, Schiano will be the associate head coach and DC.

Former Bucs HC Greg Schiano expected to accept Assoc HC/DC at Ohio State, per source; will replace former OSU DC Chris Ash, new Rutgers HC.

for Schiano. He hasn't exactly been a hot name recently and this gives him probably the easiest route of creating some positive buzz for himself.

Whether this is all that relevant a hire for OSU, who knows, it's not like Chris Ash was a super highly rated guy when they hired him and he did okay for himself in the job.

We should probably not laugh too much at it though given that Michigan once offered the HC position to Schiano.

I'm really not sure why people are laughing at this. I mean I get that we didn't want Schiano... as our head coach. But Ohio State is not hiring him as their head coach.

Not YET any ways ... :)

Strange stuff happens down in Columbus, Ohio ... no one thought Tressl would be gone and Luke Fickell was running the team ...

Honestly doesn't seem like a bad idea. Can't really laugh at OSU until Michigan can actually beat them.

I like this hire because he's completely overqualified to be a defensive coordinator.

However, I do have some hesitation, because I'm not sure how adept or experienced he is at defending the spread or running the pattern-matching cover 4 system that made Ash so successful. Hopefully Fickell has a good enough level of understanding of certain concepts of Ash's defense which can translate over and be utilized by Schiano.

But otherwise, an overqualified ex-HC with recruiting ties to Florida and New Jersey is a nice get.
Imagine this is even more temporary a hire than Ash was, because Schiano is clearly looking to be a HC again.

I would think a person being a relatively successful college head coach, followed by them being an unsuccessful NFL head coach, at least makes them overqualified to go back to being a college defensive coordinator.

At the very least, I would say Schiano is overqualified to be a college DC, underqualified to be an NFL HC, and appropriately qualified to be a college HC.

I think the jury on his qualification for being a successful college HC is still out. People would've said the same thing about Lane Kiffin prior to his implosion at USC. That's where Schiano is right now IMO. I think going to work under Meyer is a perfect place for him if he wants to ultimately have a successful career as a head coach.

I don't know any specific names, but I imagine he recruited at least one person to Miami or Rutgers to play for him and knows at least one high school head coach near both locations.

Your second point has merit. But I assume most (all?) recruits are generally aware their position coaches may not stay all four of their years, especially if the program is successful.

He recruited those places years ago, so I'm not sure how strong his ties are. And honestly, it's OSU. Recruiting has never been a huge issue. It seems his bigger issue will be leading a defensive staff for a guy who hasn't had to deal with college offenses for years now. That's where Fickell comes in, and I remember his defenses being more suspect than under Ash.

Based of Rival's rankings, Rutgers' recruiting classes finished:

2002: 47th in the nation

2003: 45th

2004: 82nd

2005: 69th

2006: 42nd

2007: 37th

2008: 46th

2009: 38th

2010: 64th

2011: 32nd

2012: 24th

Since Schiano left (after the 2011-2012 season), Rutgers' classes:

2013: 45th

2014: 57th

2015: 53rd

Towards the end of Schiano's tenure at Rutgers, he was really starting to lock up the NJ talent. Florida-wise, it looks like Schiano had about 1-2 recruits from there per class.

but NJ is a talent rich state. The problem is that Rutgers is a joke, so many of the kids go out of state (don't we have like 6 Jersey kids so far)?

I don't know if the High School kids/ coaches like/ respect Schiano, but he legitimately could pull kids out of NJ that otherwise would have gone to Michigan.

They're getting a classy dude. He'll be a great fit down there.

http://espn.go.com/college-sports/recruiting/football/story/_/id/7506907/rutgers-scarlet-knight-recruits-wait-greg-schiano-never-arrives-meeting

Greg Schiano was supposed to be at Don Bosco Preparatory School promptly at 8 a.m. Thursday morning to recruit some key prospects.

That never happened.

As scheduled, five Rutgers assistant coaches showed up at the Ramsey, N.J., school, which showcases several highly rated prospects each year. The coaches were focused on securing current commitment Leonte Carroo, a three-star receiver, and Darius Hamilton, a four-star defensive end who is primarily considering the Scarlet Knights and Florida.

"The coaches were kind of shocked," Don Bosco coach Greg Toal said. "They said 'Coach Schiano, he's never late for anything.' "

At first, the coaches thought Schiano might have gotten caught up in another meeting, despite the importance of the Don Bosco appointment.

"They didn't think it was any big deal," Toal said of their initial response. "They didn't know that he was in negotiations or anything like that."

Then, when reports began to surface that Schiano had accepted the head coaching job for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Rutgers assistants were caught unaware.

"No one knows where this is going right now," Toal said. "I'm sure it caught a lot of people off guard."

Schiano has two years experience as a DC, and they were both top 15 defenses. But, he did have Jonathan Vilma, Ed Reed, and Dan Morgan roaming from sideline to sideline so it was pretty easy on him. I think we'll find out what type of coach he is next season as Ohio State probably loses Bosa, Washington, Lee, Perry, and Bell.

This is dumb that I have to take the side of an OSU fan in this thread, but there's way too much crazy in here for me to say nothing.

This is a really good hire.  I think people are conflating hiring him as a HC at a top program (bad) and hiring him as a DC (good).

Aside from the fact that he had two great years as a DC at Miami, he also built Rutgers into something respectable as a HC and has HC experience in the NFL.  Not sure what people think qualifies you to be a DC these days, but that's a steal for OSU.

Yes, he is a huge asshat. Yes, he was a bad NFL coach.  But his strengths are player development and running a really aggressive schemed D, which he is well-positioned to do at OSU.  Not to mention that his recruiting ties are in Florida and New Jersey, the latter of which is particularly bad for Michigan.

If you want to see what people outside of the Mgoblog bubble are saying, look at the ever-rational reddit/CFB fans.  This is basically unanimously considered a home-run hire: https://www.reddit.com/r/CFB/comments/3wf0zd/greg_schiano_to_ohio_state…
