Purdue just hit an 84 yard TD pass on the first play from scrimmage.
It's getting to the point now where I doubt they'll be able to fix it until the offseason
You mean to tell me that Urban Meyer's "strong" history of good defenses didn't follow him to Ohio?
No, it left and went to A2.
it followed hin to AZ. Its just lost in the desert.
Unfortunately, Purdue has no O-Line either.
I'm amazed at how fat some of Purdues guys are. Do they not bother to condition the O-Line?
Go Boilers. I'm kind of hoping we'll be the first ones to give Ohio a loss this year, but if it was Purdue, I could live with that.
This just reeks of the sort of game where Ohio sleep walks through the first half and then does just barely enough to win in the second half. Purdue's inability to complete several passes of under 5 yards already makes a Boilers win seem disappointingly unlikely.
That said...BOILER UP!
And all these bad teams, man they want the...
They want the...
They want the...
B-I-G. Oh God.
And yet Fickell put a top-20 D out there last year. The difference is no Tressel.
The difference is their scouting has sucked for a while now and they've whiffed on guys like Greg Jones, Jerel Worthy, Jake Ryan, and Frank Clark. It started to catch up to them last year when we hung 40+ on them and this year I see a team with a couple good players (Simon, Robey, Hankins) but not much else and a few guys who can be major liabilities (Shazier especially).
But . . . but . . . but . . . according to the OZone there are only 2 players on our D that could start for Ohio State.
I thought they fixed everything because they called a meeting...
ask my old boss.
department as well.
But yeah, Urban Meyer need to hire back Jim Heacock like yesterday.
Jim Heacock essentially ran TOSU's defense, where it placed the top 10 for almost the entire decade. It's becoming more and more apparent that Fickell isnt ready to take the reins on a larger scale. I wonder if Everett Withers is going to be given more responsibility going into 2013.
So having a meeting doesn't fix everything? I hate Urban Meyer and not because he is the head coach at Ohio but that is all the more reason.
Marcus Rush will hit him from the blindside ending his coaching career.
OSU will field a better defense, but I agree that it won't be this year. Just not a lot of depth outside the line.
but Purdue is probably going to lose 41-6 now
Is this the first game you've watched all year?
Ha ha ha, Special Teams!
Wow...100 yard kickoff return for Purdue....wow
Purdue is Ohio's new Illinois... they always seem to have a TON of trouble with the Hopestache and his crew kind of like when Juice Williams ran all over OSU... But still Purdue sucks but apparently Ohio's D sucks more
Purdue just ran a fake punt for 12+ yards. Ohio's making them look pretty good today.
Looked like a rugby-punt with an option for a rush - I think we did something similar under the RR years wtih Mesko
The difference is, I assume Meyer will get the money to clean housse on the D side of the ball and go bring in a top flight D-Coord and some up and coming posistion coaches. As opposed to "Fuck it, lets go hire Greg Robinson." Meyer's a merc and will have no issue cleaning people out if they fail to perform.
If by "hung Scott Schafer out to dry publicly" you meant "fired him for having a crap defense," then yes, I agree with you. Just because Shafer's defense wasn't as bad as GERG's doesn't mean it wasn't a bad defense.
Also, your comparison to RichRod is dumb. Meyer is neglecting the defense, yes, but he is also ranked, unbeaten, and has already won against MSU.
99 times out of 99, people who bring up Rich Rod are doing so to start an eFight.
To be fair, tOSU's defense isn't great, but the offense's tendency to turn the ball over makes them look worse than they are. They are given shit hands a lot. Although right now they're doing a terrible job after the fake punt. That punt conversion seemed to suck all the aggression out of tOSU.
Would it be safe to assume this is how the rest of the B1G felt watching Gerg D at Michigan? Watching Fickell try to coach this Ohio D?
Purdue seems to have foregone the spread stuff...at least on this drive in favor of a more short timing passing attack...Good stuff sprinkled in with some decent runs from Ralph Bolden. Bolden isn't a bad RB, just been injured far too much in his career. But this drive is a pretty impressive and extended drive.
Spread Offense = No Defense
Is shutting out LSU right now. Notre Dame has an elite defense and runs the spread. Meyer's Florida defenses were killer in the title years (courtesy of Mattison). This is just a false assertion. Correlation is not causation.
Oregon, Michigan (RR years), Nebraska (was good now terrible) and as for your arguments. LSU can't score on anyone ranked in the top 60, ND runs a power spread and if I remember right Henne and company torched Meyers Florida team but there are always exceptions, I was just speaking generally.
Though Oregon isn't one of them -- they held Cam Newton to a season-low 22 in the 2010 title game.
My point is that it's possible that teams with great spread offenses and horrible defenses are just more memorable than those who are sound on both sides of the ball. "Power Spread" is still spread. Oregon runs power all the freaking time. And bear in mind, in 2006, we gave up 43 to OSU. That Florida team we shredded the next year held them to 14.
Outliers are the exception...not the rule. For the most part, though I have no systemic proof, I would expect the hypothesis that the proliferation of the no huddle spread has caused offensive production to rise and defenses to give up more points. Don't let your outliers cloud what really exists out there!
And near as I can tell there's really no good reason why this should be.
I wonder if it's a case of a head coach's general philosophy influencing decisions related to defense? My sense is teams that are spread-oriented are that way because the HC is spread-oriented, and maybe they view defense through the lens of the offense.
An exception to this is, I think, Oregon, which has a decent enough defense. Not Alabama soul-crushing defense, but decent enough.
I think for some coaches they install a soulless killing machine on offense that is good for 400+ yards per game and then they assume everyone they face will have done the same. Thus spending time on the defense is not as valuable, since it will just be facing unstoppable offenses anyway. Basically some coaches seem to argue that these days the rules benefit the offense, so you get more out of investing an hour in the offense than you do in the defense. Of course some other coaches think the opposite. Spread coaches seem the mostly likely to be the kind who advocate the rules favor offense and that should be the focus.
Some people just seem to have a bad concept of where diminshing returns kick in and you should go spend time with another unit.
I wonder if we're witnessing a swing back in this way of thinking?
Last year ended with WVU torching Clemson, then starting this year lighting up the scoreboard. Offense was king. Then Texas Tech put a major hurt on WVU by showing that a high-powered offense can be stopped ... or at least slowed down considerably. All the talk on ESPN and elsewhere was about how bad WVU's defense was.
I would think at the very least the "all offense all the time" way of thinking would see that trading score for score is based on the assumption of no mistakes. One scoring drive thwarted by an INT or fumble might well determine a game.
I like watching a good defense at work.
Florida's defense this year looks pretty good ... can't wait for the SC game today. Having Lattimore out alters the makeup of that game, however.
Personally I tend to wonder if the reason we saw a lot of one aspect teams (good o, terrible d or vice versa) was that coordinator salaries were too low. Every year there are more FCS programs and more FCS coaching gigs. Michigan finally wised up and started paying guys. I think a lot of programs need to realize they need a great HC and at least one coordinator who if you gave him his own team has the football acumen at least win the MAC or Big East. So you need to pay them enough they don't go off to Ball State.
Also I agree that hopefully teams will demostrate good D and cause a shift. I think one of the big problems is typically the B1G tends to demostrate the value of good defense in bowl games, but in recent history tOSU was the only team field constantly fielding a good to great defense.
This is why I'm drooling to see the NC game this year be between Alabama and Oregon. Battle of the two opposing points of view. We'll see who comes out on top.
I guess I'll be rooting for Alabama since Michigan is headed more toward the Alabama philosophy while Ohio State is headed more toward the Oregon philosophy.
This will be interesting. However, I really believe that Alabama would blow out Oregon. Oregon just wouldn't be big or physical enough to stand up to Alabama. Lateral running by Oregon would not go anywhere against that Alabama front. I do see Michigan going more towards an Alabama philisophy and I am very excite about that
It's not often you are inept enough to have the other team decline roughing the passer
That was classic Purdue, classic.
knew it the moment he passed
I know. Purdue's had the edge all day against tOSU, so what do they do in the red zone? Pass across the middle. You know the part of the field where there is always traffic in the middle of the field.
A good thing for Ohio State, that Purdue really sucks.
Though Purdue does seem to play its best game against OSU a lot.
Note to Luke Fickell: Iacono's in Columbus has an opening for a pizza delivery boy. Just sayin'
Joey Galloway must have spent hours in their....yeah...definitely.
IMO Ohio needed to get at least a field goal off that turnover...that was a huge turn of events and Ohio couldn't capitalize...Purdue will only build momentum.
Here's hoping Meyer calls a defensive meeting before they play us.
Purdue is embarassing to watch on offense.
AND THEY'RE WINNING
Wow how stupid do you have to be to get a roughing the passer penalty with no time left.
Short is a moron. Although in the end it just resulted in an arm put and a ding to Miller's QB rating, so haha.
I just don't think he's that good at defense as:
Times that Urbz has had an elite defense = Times he was signing Mattison's paycheck.
Of course it is also starting to look like the same is true for elite offense and Mullen being on staff.
How could he sabotage the D? Go up to each player and tell them to forget how to tackle and cover?
Watching this Purdue/OSU game is like watching the Spread option equivalent of last week's MSU/Iowa. Totally brutal.
You DID it again Purdue!
The D actually isn't that bad today. They've held Purdue to 6 points - the other touchdown was on a 100 yard kickoff return that almost cost me my TV and computer.
Although I'm obviously rooting for Purdue, I will laugh heartily if their missed XP winds up being the difference in this game.
(Spoiler: it won't)
Purdue 20, ONoo 14
Did anyone hear the announcer say that Urban told him they haven't found any linebackers to recruit? WOW
They're all in Ann arbor!
I hear they're still evaluating people
Oh no tears, please. It's a waste of good suffering!
Well buckeyes......to quote an old douche from your state, "pride comes before the fall"
I don't know whether to be happy Purdue is making Ohio look bad or mad at Purdue when they eventually Purdue this winnable game away
Could be a separated shoulder for Braxton... this could get interesting!!!
It looked like he was knocked out cold.
they might not have an offense now either.
Hopefully he'll be OK.
Quick recovery dude. Damn.
Doubtful to return to game.
Wind knocked out?
Purdue defender grabbed his jersey and swung him down to the turf. He landed on his head (left side).
Miller is clearly shaky getting to the cart/gurney.
It could be a serious injury. They need to be fucking careful with himi, those stupid Ohio medics.
Hit looked a lot like the one that knocked Gholson (Gholston? The QB from ND) out of the game last week, and he had a concussion. They're taking him to the hospital now, this looks really bad. I hope he's OK.
Guitton has no arm strength.
but I am not sad for the Buckeyes. A wierd dichotomy.
Urban Meyer sort of knows in 4th quarter his team is in trouble.
And now they have no quarterback. Yikes. Hope Miller makes it back so we can beat them full strength.
They need to get him to a hospital right fucking now. Idiots!
Neck injury??? Why are they not restricting his neck movement. I don't think it is his neck, although that is what is being said.
These Ohio fans are really dumb. The defender had his jersey, that's it.
It was an unfortunate result of the tackle, not a horse-collar tackle.
How many points has PU left on the board? 11 by my count.
he got his bell rung pretty darn good.
Is Jeremy Gallon gonna be able to wipe off the smile in time after watching how OSU defends throwback screens?
Is Braxton Miller dead?
Braxton Miller fractured something. Called for a gurney and back board and taking him to hospital on campus. Sad to here such as serious injury is possible at this time.
I've never wanted Purdue to win more than I do right now.
Inexplicable 3rd and 9 playcall by Purdue there
Keep the playclock running knowing that your opponent is down a QB and struggling to pass?
At the end of the day, it looks like arm punts by Guiton are going to be the bigger issue for OSU than no defense. I still enjoyed Purdue building a drive using nothing but bubble screens, though.
Ohio broadcast on XM... Their announcers sound very concerned! Not like they are going to lose today, but that Braxton could have a very serious and significant injury.
Purdue blows a.......s
So yeah.... that missed xp and field goal by Purdue
by playing it safe Purderp
Outside of the first play, the defense played really well. Only gave 240 yards and 7 points after. But, yeesh was that first play a joke.
followed him to Ann Arbor.
Oh. Wait a minute....
Ohhh thank god
Thats what Ohio gets for hiring that nutcase Coombs from the legendary defense of the Cincy Bearcats. And wheres that LB Grant who was like one of the Top Recruits in the whole country a few years ago? Did Withers havea good defense at UNC?
