It's difficult for HS defensive players to have monster stats when in the secondary; HS teams ate usually just not good enough to even challenge a secondary enough. Part of the reason why D-linemen are easier to evaluate and thus higher ranked coming out of HS. Woodson was Mr. Ohio as an RB out of HS, and pretty much everywhere recruited him as an RB. But UM wanted him as a CB (would have taken him as an RB) and that turned out pretty well.

Probably gone. He has been a "soft" commit for some time now and I have not expected him to sign with UM. I have no idea whether he is a Buckeye fan or not, though.

Werent there rumors surrounding him earlier? He has great ability at both receiver and corner, we absolutely need him in this class!!

If we miss on Treadwell, do we then look to switch Conley to Offense? Stribling seems to be lighting it up on D and we still have lewis at CB.

If Conley is dead set on O and we miss on treadwell this might not be a bad idea at all.

Should we freak out, because I was going to think that this is not a big deal and let the events that will unfold, unfold, but I can change my stance if that irrational.

He sounds super-athletic and it would really hurt if he flipped.

That being said, at this point I feel like Hoke and Mattison could turn a steaming pile of poop into a good defense, so yeah...

I doubt the staff wouldn't give him a chance at WR. It's also a position of need, and the staff was willing to move Brown to TE from DE last year when he requested it (obviously, things still went awry, but for other reasons). A lot of these problems, with Brown, Dawson, Conley, is just human nature. Everybody, to differing degrees, is curious about what they don't have.

Also, I think it's worth bringing up, considering peoples surprise that the staff offered an unkown like Denzel Ward, how good this staff is at evaluating talent. Conley, like DeVeon Smith, Stribling, and so on, are all players who had no/no meaningful offers when Michigan came a'calling, then the problem is getting other programs to back off. When someone like Ward gets an offer, at this point I just shrug and accept that the staff know what they're doing.

Just because other schools eventually offer doesn't mean this staff knows what it's doing with offers like that.  Stribling, Smith, Conley, etc. haven't proven anything at the next level.  They might all be flops.

I do think this staff has done a good job of recruiting, but not because they offered Stribling, Smith, Conley, and other relatively under-the-radar guys...

Recruiting rankings are a strong predictor of college success.  A 5-star recruit is far more likely to become an All-American and a high draft pick than a 4-star, a 4-star is far more likely than a 3-star, and so on.  Unless you're making the banal point that not all highly recruited players do better than all less heralded players, you're wrong.

A more valid criticism of the observation that players tend to jump up in the rankings after we offer them is that recruiting rankings are partially based on the quality of offers a prospect has attracted.  When a high schooler gets an offer from a big-time school, the recruiting services assume he must be pretty good.

My point is that not all kids who are ranked higher are actually more talented.  Moving up in the recruiting rankings means a guy like Mike Farrell or Josh Helmholdt thinks you're better than other guys.  Nothing more and nothing less.

Being a 5-star or 4-star does not determine how successful players will be.

The second half of your post makes sense, though, and I agree.

Yeah...  Interestingly, they recruited Pharaoh Brown as a DE, but then also told him he could play TE if that's what he preferred.  And we all know how that turned out.

As  long as Michigan coaches are making their no visit policy perfectly clear to recruits before they commit, I have no issues with it.  If a player decides to take visits and is willing to lose his scholly to Michigan, then it is his decision to make.  I would have loved to have Pharaoh Brown, David Dawson, and Gareon Conley (if he decides to leave) on the team, but I don't want want anyone who doesn't want to be here.

The one hard thing to deal with when landing lots of verbals early is the chance of losing guys.  Sometimes it feels like our classes only get worse after a certain point when you're looking for them to get better because we lose guys who were previously committed.  Don't get me wrong, I think we are doing fantastic with recruiting.  But, you never want to lose a guy and last year and this it seems like we always have the threat of losing some of our best guys.  I sure hope he stays and I can't imagine we wouldn't give him a shot at WR if he wanted since that's a position of need as well.

Id b going after McQuay and or Willis hard just in casewe dont get Treadwell. If we lose out on him id move Conley to WR n hopefully get a commitment from McQuay or Willis

I hope that Conley comes to Michigan. But not at any cost. He really needs to be sure that this is where he wants to be. If he really has cold feet, if he wants to go to Oregon, or even Ohio State, he should do it.

Although, the chance to be under Mattison should be very appealing to anyone on defense. Ohio has a tire fire on defense, and it isn't going to get better quickly. They are going to win the rest of their games, lose to Michigan, and have nothing til next year. An 11-1 team can't really justify firing the entire defense after one year. So they'll be stuck with the same defensive staff until at least 2014.

The real reason I'm posting, though, is because the recruit attrition IS EXACTLY WHAT HOKE PREDICTED. We were all worrying about not having enough spots. And sure enough, spots are opening up. Yes, I'd love to have Dawson and Conley, should he leave. But if both are gone, that leaves room for Green, Treadwell, McQuay, and one other late rising recruit that everyone has missed on. If you do your job well on recruiting, you can afford to lose one here and there.
