Déjà vu all over again. Mattison is becoming the Fred Jackson of defense.
January 12th, 2015 at 1:24 PM ^
or just deja vu...

But faster

Like the John Gruden of position coaches. But better!
January 12th, 2015 at 2:48 PM ^
You had to go there?

The athletic department's office of redundancy office within the athletic department has redudantly struck again, releasing this news today.

I think he'll get a DL Coach/Asst Head Coach title Larry Johnson at OSU (former longtime PSU coach)
January 12th, 2015 at 1:20 PM ^
Yup. They have him listed as DL Coach, so maybe tack on the AHC to that. Interesting tidbit from his bio was that he will have worked with Jack, John, and now Jim during his career. Glad to see his official announcement. I wonder if they extended his contract at all?
January 12th, 2015 at 4:34 PM ^
also worked with the lesser recognized brother. Jameson.

The Jack, John and Jim Harbaugh Family Defensive Line Coach.
January 12th, 2015 at 1:09 PM ^
Two in one day?! This is a first. Maybe the staff will be announced much sooner!
I'm excited to have Mattison back. The defense should be strong with him and Durkin. Now let's see what Harbaugh can do with the offense.

With 2 ace recruiters on the defensive side of the ball, we should see a lot of good players coming in the next few years. Hopefully, they can bring in Manning too to make it 3 great recruiting guys.
January 12th, 2015 at 4:33 PM ^
Recruiting is going to be fun again.
January 12th, 2015 at 9:19 PM ^
at least not until it became clear in Hoke's last season that he was taking this program nowhere. The problem was making good recruits into decent players on the field. Big problem there.
January 12th, 2015 at 1:09 PM ^
Dude has swag. This staff is going to be pretty amazing, and I'm excited to see how they recruit the final weeks.
January 12th, 2015 at 1:14 PM ^
Who loves 'ya, baby?
January 12th, 2015 at 1:36 PM ^
have swag, what he is sorely lacking is an end-of-half scheme that does not result in a guaranteed touchdown. Hopefully we can get that rectified a little bit.

Mattiswag!
January 12th, 2015 at 1:09 PM ^
Fixed the link for you. For whatever reason it was just text.
January 12th, 2015 at 1:12 PM ^
In my excitement I must have probably forgot to switch to the plain text editor.
January 12th, 2015 at 1:15 PM ^
Sometimes it seems like there are just random glitches. I blame Meyer and Dantonio. And Izzo.
January 12th, 2015 at 1:10 PM ^
I like this.
January 12th, 2015 at 1:10 PM ^
Final drive stopper before half specialist?
January 12th, 2015 at 1:10 PM ^
So we're at 4/8. Durkin, Drevno, Tolbert, and Mattison. Next would be Greg Jackson I assume.
January 12th, 2015 at 1:14 PM ^
You can have nine assistant coaches. Ten with S&C.
So we're only 40% of the way there, officially. I think Wheatley is next.
January 12th, 2015 at 1:17 PM ^
I meant 4/8 of the coaches we know are coming here. We still have 2 that we need to find.
January 12th, 2015 at 1:19 PM ^
Yeah this is just three of nine. It looks like they are starting from the top and going down. Started with DC, OC, S&C and then Mattison, who probably has some title along with DL coach. Associate HC or something like that.
January 12th, 2015 at 1:11 PM ^
And probably one of the most passionate Michigan football ambassadors there is. If this staff can't get you excited then you obviously must be dead.
January 12th, 2015 at 1:11 PM ^
now the defense can just form a fucking wall.
January 12th, 2015 at 2:00 PM ^
Can Michigan football cut Josh Smith too?
January 12th, 2015 at 3:02 PM ^
If that's what it takes, we'll find a way.
January 12th, 2015 at 1:12 PM ^
I think Mattison is just spectacular. His enthusiasm is obvious and his love of Michigan apparent.
People were hard on the defense sometimes, and rightfully so, but they have been CLEARLY the class of the team since he got here.
January 12th, 2015 at 1:16 PM ^
Now he can focus on getting those blitzes to hit home.

They were gassed and that's why we saw the not so great 4th quarter performance. Those guys were exhausted. I need to look up some stats to see how many more minutes the defense was on field this year. I bet the number is pretty damn high.
January 12th, 2015 at 1:17 PM ^
I'm glad to hear it is offical that he will be the DL coach. This was news to me, even though it was expected.
January 12th, 2015 at 1:20 PM ^
January 12th, 2015 at 1:20 PM ^
Also our DL, LB and DB coaches are ridiculous!
January 12th, 2015 at 1:20 PM ^
What do you think the comfort level will be between Dj Durkin and Mattison in terms of Xs and Os, philosophy, etc.? Mattison becomes an asst. at the place where he was the boss (on Defense anyway)?
Will this also cause some distraction amongst the players?
"Well this is how we did IT LAST YEAR", kind of thing from Greg or the players?
I am certain that being professionals will allow them to guide our teams' success! Yet, put yourself in their shoes.....

My thoughts exactly. He said he would retire at Michigan. It's definitely possible that there is some tension, but I'm guessing that Mattison is fine with taking reduced responsibility in the few years before he retires.
January 12th, 2015 at 1:21 PM ^
"Michigan is a special place to me, and I am excited to be a part of Jim's staff," said Mattison. "This University and this community mean a lot to me and my family. Having the opportunity to continue coaching a group I've grown so close to is very special. I look forward to continuing my work with these young men."
Excellent news indeed, and I do like the continuity it brings within the staff as well in that he'll be able to continue to work with the defense. That, and he is a great recruiter on top of that, of course. EIther way, this is a great addition / retention (if you will) and keeping with this theme of the staff having coaching and recruiting prowess that would be tough to match.
