a terrible blight on our fine country
Anyone who wears a legends jersey can't really get have their own legends jersey in the future, unless they add more names to the patches.
But that's irrelevant bc although kovacs has been very good for us the past few years, he's nowhere near the same league as oosterbaan, Harmon, Howard, etc
God, it just dawned on me one of my friends from UM had the last name of Oosterbaan.
I'm sure he had a choice. It's not mandatory, if HE was upset then its ok to be pissed. I bet he was honored to wear the number 11
I was disappointed as well, but in all honesty I think the legends program is really awesome. Jordan probably doesn't qualify for the program in my mind, but him being honored is great all around.
Win, win for all.
not sure how you feel
Long term, the numbers will belong to position groups, correct? 87 will always be a TE, 47 and 48 LB's, 21 (and 1) to WR, 2 to a CB. If that's the case I like 11 back there. It's a weird number to fit in somewhere, and that seems as good a position as any other I can think of.
Kovacs will always be #32, the fact that he was honored with 11 for the last 4-5 games of his senior year won't change that.
I mean I don't love it either but we just won a game on a last second hail Mary so I am going to be happy tonight and not really worry about anyone's number. Sometimes just enjoy the good things
There have been 133 years of Michigan Football and Kovacs IS NOT one of the best to ever to play for Michigan. I love him and thank him for being an exemplary Michigan Man, but he is not on the same level as a Gerald Ford or Desmond Howard, period.
The second arguement that somehow he will lose his association with the number 32 is also ridiclous. We all watched him for almost 4 years play his heart out for Michigan. Let him be honored with this new tradition and cheer for the Maize and Blue like true Wolverines do.
Yeah, I think it's appropriate for adults to get upset about what jersey numbers a player wears.
I don't mind the "legend" jerseys, but how about they only wear them for one game, unless it is the jersey they started with (like Hemmingway with 21).
I think that would be even weirder. Switching numbers is like changing your name. You don't do it willy-nilly. If you switch, that's it - you don't go back.
Now that all of the Legend numbers have been brought back, it'll settle down. There won't be any more midseason number switches.
He has had a good career all things considered but I'm surprised they gave him the jersey considering the lackluster season he is having. Folks get caught up in the story and apparently become blind to the fact he's missing tackles at an alarming rate. He lost contain with a terrible angle on 3rd and long on a critical down today and had a few other gaffes but all in all played much better than he has since his knee injury. Let's hope that's a trend spurred on by the number. Perhaps it's motivation to get back to the level we've 'grown accustomed to from him.
Well, Brandon Moore is wearing Ron Kramer's #87, and he's not had a particularly distinguished career. You do not have to actually be a legendary player in your own right to wear a Legends jersey (although Kovacs, as a four-year starter, has had a pretty good career). You just have to be someone the staff feels will represent the number with dignity.
I don't feel like giving Kovacs #11 is bad. He may only have a few games left but it is an honor to get to wear one of the legacy jerseys. Not very many people will get to wear one, and you can't argue that he is one of the most deserving candidates
Have given it to devin, I understand the wisterts weren't qb's but kivas should have stayed 32. People who are thinking kovacs is a legend type player have been smoking some funky stuff tonight. He isn't even the best #32.
Being a Michigan legend doesn't require him playing on Sundays... but is Kovaks on anyone's draft board? I would assume at a minimum he gest a FA contract to try out with someone, but is he a legit pro prospect?
Of cousre, no one thought Stevie Brown was...!
We all have grown to love Kovacs, which is amusing to me considering most people's reactions to him playing ( OMG A WALK ON? UNACCEPTABLE ! ) back in 2009/10.
Having said that, he's not an All American, Heisman winner, or similarly influential player. I don't think he's worthy of his own Legends jersey number ( meaning #32).
I have zero problems with him getting #11 and I'm actually very pleased he was given one of the Legends jerseys. To go from walk on to 3 year starter is huge; not to mention didn't he lead Michigan in tackles one year?
Here is what I find amusing.
We all love and breathlessly talk about what WR is going to be given the honor ofmwearing #1. It's rad, right?
Well, now we have six(?) jerseys that we can give as an honor to the player that wears it - just like #1 - and people start clinching their balls.
So what I'm reading here is Kovacs isn't legends worthy because he isn't All-American or NFL worthy.
Show me someone on the team who loves Michigan Football more than Kovacs. it doesn't exist. Kovacs is allright wearing #11.
You must have read a different thread because nobody said that.
have a difficult time making their own number special.
#1 was nothing at Michigan until Anthony Carter
#21 was nothing until Desmond Howard
#2 was nothing until Charles Woodson.....unless you remember Rich Hewlett like me and you were 10 and for some dumb reason he was your favorite player
Relax, don't do it, when you want to, go do it.
Not sure many current players of even future players can grasp the importance or meaningfulness of number 11. 32 on the other hand has come to represent the fight, the focus, and the clawing out of tough times for Michigan. That is Kovacs, and that is what he stands for.
I can't say i wasn't a bit surprised and maybe even dissapointed to see 11 on him.
If you're really pissed off about this, were you outraged that Junior wore Howard's number last year?
And Kovacs getting a legend's patch of his own? I think being a starter on two of the worst Michigan defenses in history will write him off of that. Plus as others have said, he doesn't deserve it over other that have worn that number like A-Train.
