Official Jordan Kovacs Legends Patch Bitching Thread

I am so pissed they took 32 off Kovacs, not only that but just for the last 3 games of his career.... really....  wtf???  At this point why even do it, what's the point?

I was hoping Kovacs would get a legends patch of his own and that 32 would be worn by any future walk-on that excels and distinguishes himself as an irreplaceable and valuable member of the team as Kovacs has.  I guess those hopes are no more.

I can't be the only one that thinks this is stupid.  All bitching goes here.

I would put the "Damn all the things!" pic here but I couldn't find it.

EDIT: Thanks to BeileinBuddy for posting it.

Kovacs has been a sensational

Kovacs has been a sensational memeber to this team and university, but has he really been one of the most influential 30 or so athletes in michigan football history?

Not one of the players on

Not one of the players on this team deserves a legends patch even 20-30 years from now. Michigan football has been wallowing in mediocrity since 2008 and it just makes these guys look better since they are actually semi competitive on both sides of the ball. I'm positive in 5-10 years nobody will remember any of these players as "Michigans greats"

After the 2008, 2009 and 2010 teams being so terribly inept, having a team thats semi competent makes people think they are the greatest. It's like Eddie Murphy said " If you're straving and someone throws you a cracker you're going to be like this: " Goddam, this is the best cracker I ever ate in my life! This ain't no regular cracker, this is a saltine or some shit"

I just can't wait for Michigan football to move on from "crackers" and really start to eat again

You must be a very pleasant

You must be a very pleasant person to be around.

Seriously, ragging on current kids and saying they'll never be regarded as "greats" is just silly.  Nobody thought we'd be thinking of Tom Brady as a "great" when he left, yet people today talk about him as if he should have won two Heisman's while on campus.

I think Denard will be remember very fondly be people who can pull their heads out of their butts and separate their hatred for RR and for losing and remember how dynamic he is as a player.  As we've seen with other people in at QB, UM's offense is nothing to write home about (except against incredibly poor defenses) without Denard in there.

Also, David Molk should be remembered as one of the best centers in UM history.

 Being remembered fondly and

Being remembered fondly and being remembered as great are two different things. Denards a dynamic player and a few say he is a once in a generation talent but i can name 5 players off the top of my head in college football who are every bit as explosive as Denard. Kenjon Barner , Tavon Austin , Johnny Manziel, Marcus Mariota and possibly Braxton Miller.

How soon we forget how good some of our Centers where. David Baas , David Brandt, Marcus Curry and those are just recent centers. If you go old school Michigan has several Centers in the college football hall of fame. You make my point for me tho , molk was a competent center and his replacement is not. It makes you think of him as being better than he was.

I can't speak for everyone but, I always thought Tom Brady got a raw deal at Michigan. He was head and shoulders above Drew Henson but had to split time with him for no other reason than fear he would leave ( which he did anyways). How many times did Brady play to a lead , then switch to Henson and lose the lead and switch back to brady to win. Brady became a great QB despite Michigan not because of Michigan.

This coaching staff exspects greatness but the fanbase accepts mediocrity.

 Even with Denard in what

Even with Denard in what good defenses has Michigan beat. Michigan hasn't beaten a team that finished in the top 17 of any poll since Carr left. We beat MSU this year because their offense was as bad as our defense was a few years ago. This must be what it was like to be an Indiana fan when they had Randle el. We have a tradition of football greatness and should exspect nothing less

Pardon me

Pardon me, but the fuck?

"Im positive 5-10 years from now no one will remember any of these players as Michigan greats."

- Really?  I am assuming that you are only referring to the seniors, as Jake Ryan and Taylor Lewan are looking like All-Americans and "Michigan greats" potential status.  Even if you are referring to only the seniors, Denard dude.  Denard Robinson.

I like Denard as a person

I like Denard as a person but I can't wait for him to graduate. He's always been an exceptional football player playing out of position. He's not a QB plain and simple. It's my opinion and prolly a lot of other peoples opinion too but I'll come out and say it

I've seen this before and while yes, technically you're right, I don't think anyone on the team would have the gall to decline wearing a legends jersey, no matter how respectfully he could do it.

He could still get the 32

He could still get the 32 patch maybe. We all know him as 32, and I doubt he'll be remembered forever as 11.

Does anyone know exactly why we're doing this anyway? Is it because we need more numbers?

The Legends Patch program

The Legends Patch program allows us to use all numbers from 1 to 99 while also honor more great players.  Before we did this, Gerald Ford was the only player we'd honored in the past 30 years.

Kovacs has had an awesome career, but he's not quite at the level of being a Michigan Legend.

I disagree to an extent.  I

I disagree to an extent.  I wouldn't call Kovacs a "legend" but when was the last time Michigan had a walk on that made an impact like Kovacs had?  His impact on just being a walk on is pretty huge for his program.  I'm not saying that their should be a Jordan Kovacs patch, but I woudn't hate it if they decided to treat #32 kind of like #1 but give it to the best walk on after spring practices as an incentive for walk ons to step up their game.  The number could be a legend in it's own right, and a new tradition.

He's made a great

He's made a great contribution, but he's not the first walk-on to earn a scholarship and become a starter.  There have been a few over the years.  The 1997 team actually featured two guys who had originally walked on - Brian Griese and Eric Mayes.  Mayes was our defensive captain that year and starting inside linebacker until he suffered a knee injury.  Griese, well, you know.

Anyhow, I don't know that a walk-on would necessarily aspire to wear the designated "walk-on jersey."  They usually just want to be treated as part of the team, no different from the guys who were recruited.  What's cool about Kovacs wearing #11 is that he's a guy who walked on and ended up wearing a Legends jersey.

Shit is not good at all.

Shit is not good at all. Unless Minny and Iowa somehow show up in the next 2 weeks, over the past 2 games, officials (along with late collapses by their opponents) have just handed the Huskers a trip to the B1G championship on a silver platter. Not really sure why people are wasting time whining over Kovacs receiving a great honor.

I think it's rad. I don't care about number changes. The guy played well and they gave him a legends jersey. That is cool. End of story.

I seem to recall

them mentioning that the players are merely offered the jersey and then have to accept the number change... which begs the question, why the hell do you care what number he wants to wear?

You don't think Jordan Kovacs

You don't think Jordan Kovacs is a Michigan legend? Really?

Look up the Youtube video of the feature that BTN did on him.  His story is amazing.  The fact that he started out a walk-on makes it all the more remarkable.

A good story does not warrant

A good story does not warrant a legends patch, there have been plenty of amazing stories in michigan football history, they don't all have retired numbers

He is a very influential

He is a very influential player and one that has had bright spots on the feild with his play. But I truly doubt he gets a legends patch. They still have yet to give one to Woodson or AC, and their way up on the list before Kovacs. Eric Mays was also a walk-on captain and also was on a NC team, I think he would be ahead of Kovacs too.

Great story doesn't mean

Great story doesn't mean Michigan legend.  I know he is near and dear to us as Michigan fans, but he hasn't even been a 1st Team All-Conference player.  You have to remember the men these patches are honoring.  A past president, A Heisman Trophy winner, a 3 time All-American (every year playing), etc.

You are correct Kovacs is a great story.  But in 40 years will he be the person the next generation looks back and recognizes? I doubt it.

From the mgoblue.com postgame

From the mgoblue.com postgame quotes (emphasis added):

U-M Senior/Junior Safety Jordan Kovacs

On wearing No. 11 ... "Coach Hoke let me know earlier in the week that I would be wearing No. 11, and he asked me how I felt about it, and of course I felt it was a huge honor. I've worn 32 for quite some time and I think that I will always be 32, but I think it's a great opportunity to honor our legends and that's the approach that I had. I did a little research on the Wisterts and I had the opportunity to meet Albert yesterday, and he said that when he was first given 11, it was just so humbling and he was so excited and it was a huge honor for him, and he said that he prayed every game before he put it on that he would be worthy of wearing it, so that's kind of my approach. It's a huge honor, and I just hope that I am worthy enough to wear it."

Kovacs seems to understand what others don't--he can still be considered #32, but at the same time he has been given this great honor.

Amen. I logged in to post

Amen. I logged in to post this same thing. Kovacs considers himself 32 still, but appreciated the opportunity to be honored with this number. It might be a different story if this was halfway through last year - but for just a few games - seems like a nice comprimise. He deserves extra recognition.

Jordan Kovacs is the man, but if you honestly think he would get that number retired for him over the freaking A-train you are either younger than 18 or delusional.

I was wondering the same thing

Why give it to a Senior that has only a few games left.  Also, creating a number for walkons would be a great way to respect what Kovacs not only did as a walkon, but DID to get there.  Either way...GO BLUE!

it is kind of a ripoff

Anyone who wears a legends jersey can't really get have their own legends jersey in the future, unless they add more names to the patches.

But that's irrelevant bc although kovacs has been very good for us the past few years, he's nowhere near the same league as oosterbaan, Harmon, Howard, etc

I was disappointed as well, but in all honesty I think the legends program is really awesome. Jordan probably doesn't qualify for the program in my mind, but him being honored is great all around.

Long term

Long term, the numbers will belong to position groups, correct? 87 will always be a TE, 47 and 48 LB's, 21 (and 1) to WR, 2 to a CB. If that's the case I like 11 back there. It's a weird number to fit in somewhere, and that seems as good a position as any other I can think of.

Kovacs will always be #32, the fact that he was honored with 11 for the last 4-5 games of his senior year won't change that.

I love the Kovacs story but...

There have been 133 years of Michigan Football and Kovacs IS NOT one of the best to ever to play for Michigan. I love him and thank him for being an exemplary Michigan Man, but he is not on the same level as a Gerald Ford or Desmond Howard, period.

The second arguement that somehow he will lose his association with the number 32 is also ridiclous. We all watched him for almost 4 years play his heart out for Michigan. Let him be honored with this new tradition and cheer for the Maize and Blue like true Wolverines do.

IMO

I don't mind the "legend" jerseys, but how about they only wear them for one game, unless it is the jersey they started with (like Hemmingway with 21).

I think that would be even

I think that would be even weirder.  Switching numbers is like changing your name.  You don't  do it willy-nilly.   If you switch, that's it - you don't go back.

Now that all of the Legend numbers have been brought back, it'll settle down.   There won't be any more midseason number switches.

He has had a good career all

He has had a good career all things considered but I'm surprised they gave him the jersey considering the lackluster season he is having. Folks get caught up in the story and apparently become blind to the fact he's missing tackles at an alarming rate. He lost contain with a terrible angle on 3rd and long on a critical down today and had a few other gaffes but all in all played much better than he has since his knee injury. Let's hope that's a trend spurred on by the number. Perhaps it's motivation to get back to the level we've 'grown accustomed to from him.

Well, Brandon Moore is

Well, Brandon Moore is wearing Ron Kramer's #87, and he's not had a particularly distinguished career.  You do not have to actually be a legendary player in your own right to wear a Legends jersey (although Kovacs, as a four-year starter, has had a pretty good career).  You just have to be someone the staff feels will represent the number with dignity.

I don't feel like giving

I don't feel like giving Kovacs #11 is bad. He may only have  a few games left but it is an honor to get to wear one of the legacy jerseys. Not very many people will get to wear one, and you can't argue that he is one of the most deserving candidates

Have given it to devin, I understand the wisterts weren't qb's but kivas should have stayed 32. People who are thinking kovacs is a legend type player have been smoking some funky stuff tonight. He isn't even the best #32.

sunday player?

Being a Michigan legend doesn't require him playing on Sundays... but is Kovaks on anyone's draft board?  I would assume at a minimum he gest a FA contract to try out with someone, but is he a legit pro prospect?

Of cousre, no one thought Stevie Brown was...!

We all have grown to love

We all have grown to love Kovacs,  which is amusing to me considering most people's reactions to him playing  ( OMG A WALK ON? UNACCEPTABLE ! ) back in 2009/10.

Having said that, he's not an All American, Heisman winner, or similarly influential player.  I don't think he's worthy of his own Legends jersey number ( meaning #32).

I have zero problems with him getting #11 and I'm actually very pleased he was given one of the Legends jerseys.  To go from walk on to  3 year starter is huge;  not to mention didn't he lead Michigan in tackles one year?

Here is what I find

Here is what I find amusing.

We all love and breathlessly talk about what WR is going to be given the honor ofmwearing #1. It's rad, right?

Well, now we have six(?) jerseys that we can give as an honor to the player that wears it - just like #1 - and people start clinching their balls.

I don't like that players will

have a difficult time making their own number special.

#1 was nothing at Michigan until Anthony Carter

#21 was nothing until Desmond Howard

#2 was nothing until Charles Woodson.....unless you remember Rich Hewlett like me and you were 10 and for some dumb reason he was your favorite player

what 32 means.

Not sure many current players of even future players can grasp the importance or meaningfulness of number 11. 32 on the other hand has come to represent the fight, the focus, and the clawing out of tough times for Michigan. That is Kovacs, and that is what he stands for.

I can't say i wasn't a bit surprised and maybe even dissapointed to see 11 on him.

Soooo..

If you're really pissed off about this, were you outraged that Junior wore Howard's number last year?

And Kovacs getting a legend's patch of his own?  I think being a starter on two of the worst Michigan defenses in history will write him off of that.  Plus as others have said, he doesn't deserve it over other that have worn that number like A-Train.
