Official Jordan Kovacs Legends Patch Bitching Thread

I am so pissed they took 32 off Kovacs, not only that but just for the last 3 games of his career.... really....  wtf???  At this point why even do it, what's the point?

I was hoping Kovacs would get a legends patch of his own and that 32 would be worn by any future walk-on that excels and distinguishes himself as an irreplaceable and valuable member of the team as Kovacs has.  I guess those hopes are no more.

I can't be the only one that thinks this is stupid.  All bitching goes here.

I would put the "Damn all the things!" pic here but I couldn't find it.

EDIT: Thanks to BeileinBuddy for posting it.

Not one of the players on this team deserves a legends patch even 20-30 years from now. Michigan football has been wallowing in mediocrity since 2008 and it just makes these guys look better since they are actually semi competitive on both sides of the ball. I'm positive in 5-10 years nobody will remember any of these players as "Michigans greats"

After the 2008, 2009 and 2010 teams being so terribly inept, having a team thats semi competent makes people think they are the greatest. It's like Eddie Murphy said " If you're straving and someone throws you a cracker you're going to be like this: " Goddam, this is the best cracker I ever ate in my life! This ain't no regular cracker, this is a saltine or some shit"

I just can't wait for Michigan football to move on from "crackers" and really start to eat again

You must be a very pleasant person to be around.

Seriously, ragging on current kids and saying they'll never be regarded as "greats" is just silly.  Nobody thought we'd be thinking of Tom Brady as a "great" when he left, yet people today talk about him as if he should have won two Heisman's while on campus.

I think Denard will be remember very fondly be people who can pull their heads out of their butts and separate their hatred for RR and for losing and remember how dynamic he is as a player.  As we've seen with other people in at QB, UM's offense is nothing to write home about (except against incredibly poor defenses) without Denard in there.

Also, David Molk should be remembered as one of the best centers in UM history.

Being remembered fondly and being remembered as great are two different things. Denards a dynamic player and a few say he is a once in a generation talent but i can name 5 players off the top of my head in college football who are every bit as explosive as Denard. Kenjon Barner , Tavon Austin , Johnny Manziel, Marcus Mariota and possibly Braxton Miller.

How soon we forget how good some of our Centers where. David Baas , David Brandt, Marcus Curry and those are just recent centers. If you go old school Michigan has several Centers in the college football hall of fame. You make my point for me tho , molk was a competent center and his replacement is not. It makes you think of him as being better than he was.

I can't speak for everyone but, I always thought Tom Brady got a raw deal at Michigan. He was head and shoulders above Drew Henson but had to split time with him for no other reason than fear he would leave ( which he did anyways). How many times did Brady play to a lead , then switch to Henson and lose the lead and switch back to brady to win. Brady became a great QB despite Michigan not because of Michigan.

This coaching staff exspects greatness but the fanbase accepts mediocrity.

We beat MSU this year because their offense was as bad as our defense was a few years ago. This must be what it was like to be an Indiana fan when they had Randle el. Kovacs has had an awesome career, but he's not quite at the level of being a Michigan Legend.

I disagree to an extent.  I wouldn't call Kovacs a "legend" but when was the last time Michigan had a walk on that made an impact like Kovacs had?  His impact on just being a walk on is pretty huge for his program.  I'm not saying that their should be a Jordan Kovacs patch, but I woudn't hate it if they decided to treat #32 kind of like #1 but give it to the best walk on after spring practices as an incentive for walk ons to step up their game.  The number could be a legend in it's own right, and a new tradition.

He's made a great contribution, but he's not the first walk-on to earn a scholarship and become a starter.  There have been a few over the years.  The 1997 team actually featured two guys who had originally walked on - Brian Griese and Eric Mayes.  Mayes was our defensive captain that year and starting inside linebacker until he suffered a knee injury.  Griese, well, you know.

Anyhow, I don't know that a walk-on would necessarily aspire to wear the designated "walk-on jersey."  They usually just want to be treated as part of the team, no different from the guys who were recruited.  What's cool about Kovacs wearing #11 is that he's a guy who walked on and ended up wearing a Legends jersey.

Unless Minny and Iowa somehow show up in the next 2 weeks, over the past 2 games, officials (along with late collapses by their opponents) have just handed the Huskers a trip to the B1G championship on a silver platter. Not really sure why people are wasting time whining over Kovacs receiving a great honor.

Look up the Youtube video of the feature that BTN did on him.  His story is amazing.  The fact that he started out a walk-on makes it all the more remarkable.

He is a very influential player and one that has had bright spots on the feild with his play. But I truly doubt he gets a legends patch. They still have yet to give one to Woodson or AC, and their way up on the list before Kovacs. Eric Mays was also a walk-on captain and also was on a NC team, I think he would be ahead of Kovacs too.

Great story doesn't mean Michigan legend.  I know he is near and dear to us as Michigan fans, but he hasn't even been a 1st Team All-Conference player.  You have to remember the men these patches are honoring.  A past president, A Heisman Trophy winner, a 3 time All-American (every year playing), etc.

You are correct Kovacs is a great story.  But in 40 years will he be the person the next generation looks back and recognizes? I doubt it.

From the mgoblue.com postgame quotes (emphasis added):

U-M Senior/Junior Safety Jordan Kovacs

On wearing No. 11 ... "Coach Hoke let me know earlier in the week that I would be wearing No. 11, and he asked me how I felt about it, and of course I felt it was a huge honor. I've worn 32 for quite some time and I think that I will always be 32, but I think it's a great opportunity to honor our legends and that's the approach that I had. I did a little research on the Wisterts and I had the opportunity to meet Albert yesterday, and he said that when he was first given 11, it was just so humbling and he was so excited and it was a huge honor for him, and he said that he prayed every game before he put it on that he would be worthy of wearing it, so that's kind of my approach. It's a huge honor, and I just hope that I am worthy enough to wear it."

Kovacs seems to understand what others don't--he can still be considered #32, but at the same time he has been given this great honor.

Amen. I logged in to post this same thing. Kovacs considers himself 32 still, but appreciated the opportunity to be honored with this number. It might be a different story if this was halfway through last year - but for just a few games - seems like a nice comprimise. He deserves extra recognition.

Why give it to a Senior that has only a few games left.  Also, creating a number for walkons would be a great way to respect what Kovacs not only did as a walkon, but DID to get there.  Either way...GO BLUE!
