Official 2011 Who Schedules Weddings During Football Season? Thread

It's August. At worst you should be receiving invites now for weddings in October and November. But the question remains:

Weddings during Football Season?

What is the deal with that?

Current tally: 3
Number on UM/MSU Saturday: 1

Edit: EDSBS apparently received his invites a day before me. Definitely worth a read.

I have lucked out so far.

I have lucked out so far. Only one is planned, and it is on EMU Saturday (and doesn't start until after the game is over).

I will still do my best to weasel out of it, however.

Same here...I was really happy to see it wasn't on the ND game...maybe we're invited to the same wedding...

EDIT: But I'm not going to weasel out of the wedding!

One on the Friday night before EMU.   But my wife is the matron of honor, and I have tickets, and we're in Grand Rapids.  Shit.

In the same boat. Hate

In the same boat. Hate weddings during football season but if I have to be dragged to one, EMU's probably the weekend to do it. I originally thought it was ND weekend, nearly had a heart attack.

Got invited to one on the day of the Western game.  Only silvering lining is its a MAC game.  Bad thing is, it is the debut of Coach Hoke.

Got married during football season

but it was on a Friday in Ann Arbor before the away Iowa game in 2005-- poprivini (Polish day after wedding party) was a blast watching the game. Week before was the Manningham PSU game and that was a fun 2nd bachelor party weekend. Week after the wedding was the Northwestern night game and we had a flight that landed back from the honeymoon 2 hours before kickoff. all was well. and did I mention the wife was the one more worried about scheduling around the actual games?

Unfortunately ...

at some time in the future, October 22nd will likely have a "don't miss" game.  Maybe you're marrying another "football lover" and I hope so, b/c you are seriously tempting the fate of the FG (yep - Football Gods).

Go Blue!

Exactly

Men always forget this.  They think they're getting the best of both worlds, pleasing the fiancée by having a fall wedding, and pleasing themselves by having it on a bye week.  But as the years go on, damned if that date doesn't fall on a lot of football Saturdays.  (Conference games, too, since that's when the bye always occurs.)

It's best to avoid fall weddings altogether.  If the girl can't accept getting married at in any of the nine football-free months, maybe she's not the one.

NOT ME!!!

My wife to be planned ours for the 19th of this month.  After a 2 week honeymoon we will settle down for the first game of the season.  I hope to indoctrinate her into everything Michigan football by taking her to a game this season (she really didn't get into sports before she met me).  So anyone who is willing to donate tickets (or sell at a reasonable price) I'm willing to take them.  She's gotta be baptized in all things Michigan  ;)  (And she's looking forward to it, too)

Go BLUE!!!

Fall wedding rules

I told my wife there are only four non-family members that I would consider going to their wedding in the fall. Other than those few, she has learned to not even ask about borderline friends. I had my wedding in April to protect football season for my fellow fans. Nothing ruins a Saturday like an all day wedding event.

A friend I've known since jr

A friend I've known since jr high invited me to her wedding, with no option to bring a date, on opening weekend. I told her I'll go to the ceremony (at 1), and be there after the game (dinner at 5:30). No way I'm missing the first game of the year.

Sister's former roommate the weekend of CMU/MSU, kinda a huge deal to us CMU kids and she wants me to go the reception. Lucky my sister and her roommate both went to MSU and the roommate was in the marching band. Needless to say if the un-thinkable happens and we even up the series with them, it will be tough call between attending that with my CMU hardhat on or partying on campus in full Central apparel

Our wedding will be in February (south of the border) so no issues there... she started loving Michigan after she was walking around one day in Yellowstone with a Michigan shirt I'd bought her and some random person looked at her and told her "Go Blue"... she's been converted since.

It may feel like win ...

(Though I have no idea why) ...

Anyone that "wants a Fall wedding" is certainly not into football.  Good luck & ..

GoBlue!

ps - I was married on Dec. 3rd  which use to be safe ... but who knew about B1G championship game 34 years ago!  Of course after 34 years, she would now go to the game, but not back in the day .....

I have one on UM/MSU and I already plan on tailgating in the church parking lot if it's a 12:00pm kick and no, I am not kidding. It's a Lutheran wedding so I will not be alone. I am hoping for a 3:30 kick so I'll only miss a quarter at the most and then it's to the bar before the reception.

My sister-in-law is getting married next year on Oct 20th Mich/MichSt weekend. 1st thing my wife said to her was "you know that's a Michigan football Weekend probably, hope they aren't playing anyone too important". Not congrats. Now I need to come up with a way to watch it. Our wedding was in April as well to avoid this mess.

Wedding planned for U-M/MSU weekend...

and while the ceremony will be going on inside the church...I will have a cooler with beer in my cousin's big ass van with a few people (both sides, both fan bases lol) drinking and listening to the game...

I mean seriously...odds are everything will go on like every other wedding I have been to...successfully according to plan with no drama...so I plan on drinking and listening to the game

oops

Oops.  I have to confess we did that.  We have always been big UM Football fans, but maybe not as focused on it in 1988.  (We usually won back then, little kids.)

We were married at the Michigan League and our only attention to football in the planning was that we were limited to weekends with away games.  It got me wondering just now:  who did we play on 10/15/88?   I just looked -- we played Iowa away, and we TIED 17-17.  How the hell did I not know that?

Our sports crimes that evening were focused on preempting our guests from watching the first night of the World Series.  As we were getting into our car with rice in our faces on the driveway on the North University side of the League, we were informed by my brother (Tiger fan) and my wife's counsin (Dodger fan) that Gibson had hit a game winning homer off of Eckersley.

Fist Pump.

I have a good and bad scenario for a couple of my friends...

1.  My buddy is a big ND fan and his cousin planned her wedding a year ago and of course set it on UM/ND.  Since then, he's learned all about the night game, retro unis, GameDay probably being there, etc.  Oh and 2 wks ago, his long time girl dumped him...so no game and no date.

2.  Other buddy (another big ND fan, though this one cheers for UM when they don't play) got married in June.  A month and a half ago, his new wife receives a wedding invite the same day as UM/ND.  He told her, I love you but I've had this planned WAY longer than you getting that invite (we go to UM/ND every year together)...so either you go solo or don't go.  The 2 of us will see you at the Big House!!!

Not funny

You think that’s bad Cousins has attended 3 weddings this summer. Does not like how some invited guest identify themselves as Michigan fans, complains to brides, then has to go to the press, and still no apologize from Michigan fans. Now he must make burnt offering to the Spartan Gods in hopes of getting some healing from his wounds.

My sister is marrying an OSU fan on the day of The Game.

The "good news"?...

The plan is to have a projector for the game. All of his family are OSU fans. All of our side will be UM fans of course... Big wedding... Open bar...

Should be interesting.

to be honest

that's fun. that's interesting and kind of exciting and well used timing. i don't half mind that.

but this. this crosses a line.

any idea when MSU has scheduled the UM game? still a chance it's a night game? has to either be 4 pm or night, right?

My cousin scheduled her

My cousin scheduled her wedding for the day of The Game but had the ceremony scheduled through the first half and then a cash bar with no tvs...my brothers and I drank from a flask in the back of a church while listening to the game on the radio, and then ditched the reception - the cousin doesn't talk to us, but my parents heartily approved...

The Ann Arbor church I go to

The Ann Arbor church I go to marks all home games on its calendar and won't allow people to schedule weddings there on those dates, due to parking, traffic, lack of hotel rooms, etc.. A lot of churches in the area do that.

My fiancée loved the date and I acquiesced, so...
We will be having our Florida wedding on the day of the Notre Dame game. Reception set to end around the start of the game for my few Michigan friends who made the trip. Living in Florida for six years means the majority of guest will be local.

Ultimately, I will be consummating my marriage during the first half of the Notre Dame game, and she said we can watch the second half together, which really makes it our first moment as a married couple. We've chosen to wait for each other, so the new lights won't be the only first for the night...!

What about Yom Kippur?

Obviously, it doesn't matter when Yom Kippur falls if you're liberal or don't observe the high holy days. And I don't suppose many who are Hasidic attend UM. But I'm curious how often Yom Kippur (or Rosh Hashanah) fall on a Saturday, when it is a big game, and orthodox generally attend prayer service? Has this ever happened with an ND game? If this applies to you, have you ever attended prayer service with a live radio feed and an earpiece?

My uncle got married in 1993

My uncle got married in 1993 at the exact same time as the first Michigan-Penn State game.  He and my aunt were both MSU alums, and MSU was playing someone big that evening (maybe ND? OSU?), so they were quite content to plan to crowd around the bar at the reception with the frat and sorority siblings.

But for me and my dad...  Torture.  I was stationed with a radio in the doorway of the vestry next to the altar of the church until the last possible second before the ceremony started sending score updates to my dad with my fingers.

My aunt and uncle were married the day of the 1990 UofM/MSU game.  My family is almost all MSU fans.  I remember listening to the game on a car radio in the parking lot during the reception.  I was 9 years old, visiting Lansing from my home in Ann Arbor and I knew what this game meant.  When Howard was mugged I was devestated.  Took me awhile before I ever saw the whole video of that game and it stung even worse.

Notre Dame.

That's right, I'm going to a wedding during the Notre Dame game.  But it gets far worse than that.  I'm the best man in the wedding which is happening in Cincinnati and all of the bride's family are buckeye fans.  And, it's not an afternoon wedding- the ceremony starts at 5:30 meaning that all of the reception festivities will be happening during the game.

And I've got 2 tickets to the game which I can't use.

I decided that I'm going to do my best to not let anyone tell me anything about the game and I'm just going to watch a recording of it after the reception.  Of course, that means my phone has to be off so nobody texts me score updates.  And, should anyone try to tell me how the game is going during the reception, I've given myself license to do whatever it takes to shut them up.

So, yeah.  Once the game gets closer I'm sure that I'll make a pity thread to myself.

I wouldn't worry about it. Go to a decent bar with a few tv's and I am sure they will have it on. They love college football down there. Even if they don't they are friendly and might switch one on for you if you ask nice.

My wife was brides maid

My wife was brides maid during the 2010 UM/MSU game. I was pissed. During the ceremony I watched espn gametracker on my driod. After the ceremony I ran to a bar across the street threw a 20 down and told the bartender to switch it the game. I was in a small resort town in the Finger Lakes in NY. He obliged, I watched, got pissed, got drunk and left the bar.

I made it through cocktail hour ate my filet walked up to our room and passed out in my suit. Never even saw the bride and groom dance. If michigan won I would probably have done the same thing -just replace "got pissed" with "got really freaking happy".

My wife had two friends that

My wife had two friends that were getting married to each other on the day of the MSU game where Henne led a comeback as a senior 28-24 in Spartan Stadium.  I had only met them once and I was just dating my wife at that point, so  I skipped the wedding, watched the game and showed up late for the reception.  It was worth it.

The groom claimed to be the "biggest Michigan fan in the world" - if that were true he wouldn't be getting married on a gameday to one of our bigger rivals.

He is now divorced, probably Karma.

I will be missing...

The first game with the new scoreboards, but perhaps more importantly, the first game with Brady Hoke at the helm. My fiancé's brother is getting married on Mackinac Island (where in case you don't know, is basically cutoff from civilization). I'm sure I'll be watching the game on Gametracker, but it just won't be the same. The funniest part about the whole thing? The two getting married went to Western Michigan and my fiancé and I went to Michigan.

Dude you're so wrong

First, just got back from Mackinaw Island and my cell coverage was better there than in downtown Alpena. So you've got scoretracker or the Mgoblog ap for your phone.

Second, mackinaw island has shitloads of bars with TV's and Big Ten Network. You will not have a problem. Hit up the Pink Pony or there's a new sports bar right across the street from the Shepler's docks with good wings. If you're staying at the Grand Hotel or Mission Point, you will not have a problem talking the barman into switching TV channels to get Michigan on.

Do the wedding ceremony, in the interim find the nearest bar and watch the agme until the reception starts at 6 or 7p. Hopefully we should be into Jack Kennedy time at that point.

There is a very simple rule to follow ...

If you are a Michigan football addict ( I mean a true addiction ... don't miss any game either live or on TV ... and this would include teams like EMU), the Rule #1 is:

Do NOT get married between August 15th and December 15th, period.

If you ignore this Rule, at some point in your married life, your anniversary will clash with your true "first love" and whenever this happens you have eliminated the Win - Win scenario with your wife (spouse).

However ... if you are marrying someone that also is a Michigan football addict, then if you are going to get married during football season (still unadvisable - b/c you're screwing with your friends who are also Michigan addicts) at least get married on a Friday.

Go Blue!

Today is our 5th anniversery!

Today is our 5th anniversery! My wife would have loved a fall wedding but she knew the problems it would cause that day and in the future. Plus, she would hate to miss a game herself. My daughter was born in September but it has not caused any issues regarding a game so far. This year we will probably have her party on the saturday of the eastern game. Her birthday is in late september so there should be no conflicts in the future.

Had a friend get married on

Had a friend get married on the day of the ND game in '09 (tate's triumph) in NC. I was not happy.

My cousin got married on Illinois weekend last year...I skipped his wedding to see one of the most ridiculous games in M history.

Now my brother is getting married on a Saturday in the fall this year...I told him flat out that if it was ND weekend I was going to either A) not show up to his wedding which I'm standing up in or B) make damn sure he had a big screen TV at the reception. Turns out its EMU weekend so I don't much care...

Seriously people, schedule your fall weddings in conjunction with Michigan bye week (assuming there is one in your given year) otherwise I'm not coming.

EMU game this year

. . . and I had to think about whether I would go to the wedding or the game. It's my wife's side, but she's an alum and understands Michgan football. Since I like kid getting married and it's EMU, I figured what the heck. It also gives my season ticket partner a chance to take his wife to a game.

And, for the record, my wife and I got married in May. I know a wedding planner and she tells me that October is the most popular month for weddings in Michigan. That's criminal. What the HELL is wrong with May, June and July? I know July this year was unbearably hot, but it's not usually that bad.

My family is pretty religious

My family is pretty religious (jewish) and when high holidays fall on saturdays, such as Yom Kippur will this year, the majority of my family would never watch tv. Howeva there is alot of conservative jews such as myself in my family that went to Michigan and since going to Temple is an all day affair on Yom Kippur we normally will watch the game and then go to services after.

Also religious jewish weddings are scheduled for sunday nights so that people who are shomer shabbos can make it out/ use electricity etc. So thankfully when I get married I can schedule it for whichever weekend I want, watch the games on saturday, and celebrate my anniversary the next day!

But the Northwestern Game is at night

The Northwestern game this year is at 7pm. Does it matter after sunset on Saturday? I thought shabbos was from Friday sundown through Saturday sundown? Or does the practice change because Yom Kippur is more important?

It sucks.

I have to drive down to Mississippi during welcome week and miss the WMU game to go to my sister's wedding.

Planned my wedding on August

Planned my wedding on August 14th of last year for this specific reason after the debalace of 2009 that saw me miss: CMU beat MSU (listened to via speakerphone on cell phone while @ wedding and constant ESPN updates during ceremony), UM beat ND, and OSU loose.

Last year my now Ex's Best

Last year my now Ex's Best friend go married on the day of the MSU/UM game.  so I was pissed already, almost said I wasn't going lol. but I did begrudingly, and slipped away right after the ceremony to a sports bar. well it didn't go swimingly. my ex was a MSU alum and she likes to gloat so that didn't help things.  so I'm thinking thank goodness for the open bar at the reception....show up to the bar and I SWEAR the guy was the spitting image of dantonio, then as I'm relising this the DJ plays the MSU fight song because it was now official (I left after it got silly)....I was cranky that ngiht to say the least....

funny thing is the fight that basically led to the breakup was me gloating over the 2nd win of MSU in basketball (it was on its way out by then but was kinda the catalyst to push it over that edge)

if my future groom wanted to be married on a football saturday, i would consider that a deal breaker.

i understand that fall is a nice time in michigan (until mid october certainly, sometimes november can be nasty) but come on...

definitely not looking forward til i am at the age where my friends start to get married....

I got married October 9, 2004

The upside to me far outweighed the negatives.  I didn't have to wear a tux in 90 degree heat.  The changing leaves were a great backdrop for our photos.  I also was in Greece on my honeymoon when the Yankees lost their 3-0 lead on the Red Sox in the ALCS.  I deny to this day that it ever happened because I was out of the country.  If your significant other wants to get married during football season, suck it up and give them what they want.  Then get used to the feeling!

There are very few things...

that will pull me away from my TV on a Saturday in the fall. Even hunting won't do it. I even do double call during the week so I can have Saturday free through the fall. I can honestly say that a Wedding wouldn't get me to miss a UM game unless it was maybe a family member, and even that would be a stretch.

You schedule for a Friday

You schedule for a Friday before the game.  My cousin did this in Tallahassee and we all went to the Florida State-UNC game the next day.

Mine was the worst planning

My wedding date was November 18, 2006. Anyone remember who we played that day??? It was supposed to be the week before but my wife is hindu and apparently it was a bad luck day so she asked if we could move it a week. Why didn't I consult the schedule?!? I've considered that we jinxed them and proposed the idea of a divorce/remarry thing to change our anniversary date. Surprisingly my wife was less than enthused with that

I'm one of those people

My wedding was Oct 1, 2005 Michigan @ Michigan State game (played @State) in Ann Arbor (Union). Let me tell you, it couldn't have been a more perfect day.

My wife and my favorite time of year is fall, and what better than fall in A2 where we met. We planned the wedding to be after the game (almost had a situation since Brabbs miss moved us to overtime, he made up for it), but everyone got to watch the game (and Michigan won! which was mentioned in my brothers speach).

It was a perfect fall day in A2, we walked down the aisle to "The Victors" with maize and blue pom poms being waved my wife had made, it was all Michigan themed, and I am still wearing the M Go Blue for Motts wristband that we gave out as favors (which goes toward donations).

I have to admit, though, I'm bummed about going to Iowa for a distant relatives wedding and have to miss the Eastern Game which is part of the 4 pack I got.  Hopefully I can work out a trade to get SDSU or Purdue.

I specifically avoided college football season..

I was married December 3rd to hit the lull between the regular season and bowl season.  Fortunate for me, there wasn't the Big 10 Championship game almost 7 years ago.

I have already suggested that my wife and I celebrate our anniversary at the B1G Championship in Indy.  She just doesn't seem that keen on the idea though....

Wait until you have kids!

My 2 children both have birthdays in football season.  I have to go to great lengths to make sure that neither boy has a family or friends party during Michigan games.  Since we go to games, I also have to make sure that it doesn't compete with the tailgate, either.  So we have birthday parties at strange times...

i have long said

there is a reason that the MLB season is 162 games.  For summer to be wedding season!  I can handle missing 1/162 of a season.

1/12 or 1/13 or 1/14 of a season, though?  forget it, that's just unreasonable.

and to all those who say, "yes but they play games every year, so and so your favorite thrice divorced aunt will only get married this one *more* time"

michigan will only play eastern michigan once in 2011, and it will be way awesomer than aunt so and so's wedding.

Just one this year

But it's opening day.  And the wedding is in Ohio.

A couple of years ago I had SEVEN (!!) weddings on football saturdays.  It was at that point that I decided to make no more unmarried friends.

A true friend does not have a wedding during football season.  That's what summer is for.

here's the policy:   dry

here's the policy:

dry wedding?

unless the bride or groom is/was an alcoholoic, im not going.

wedding on game day? (away game)

skip the wedding and watch game from a nearby bar.  drop in for the reception after game has concluded.  50% deduction in value of gift.

wedding on game day? (home game)

likely skip the whole affair.  ill get there when i get there, which may be not at all depending on post-game traffic.  NO GIFT.

I had a buddy schedule his wedding at the exact same time of the Iowa-Michigan game last year.  Everyone was glued to the gamecast on their phones.  I don't remember a second of the wedding itself.

I have the power

As a preacher, I get to say whether or not I am available to officiate at a wedding. Let's just say that there are various times during the year when I simply am not available due to a "prior commitment." And it is no one else's business what my "prior commitment" actually is.

I was married in Ann Arbor, but in mid-December, after the season was over and before bowl games started. I'd be curious to know if reception halls near AA give price breaks for affairs scheduled during the season, during the game. Now that would be a dilemma:  "Honey, I know that we can get a 50% price break for a hall during the season, but we're just going to have to pay more, because we can't get married during a game."

The one's I feel sorry for are those who run into scheduling conflicts because of the post-season. (i.e., MLB & NFL.) A friend had a long scheduled out of the country vacation that conflicted with his Bears season tickets in the post season last year. Cancelling the vacation would have affected many other people, and tens of thousands of dollars. The best he could do was to make sure he had reception, a good TV, and watch the game while on the beach. All in all, there are worse things. Like being a Lions fan in the last 50 years.

I have 2 this season-- one of them is on the bye week, thank god. The other is on September 10th. They actually were trying to think of people's football games schedule and made the wedding a night wedding. Guess what guys? Michigan has their first ever NIGHT GAME THAT DAY. awesome.
