Observations from the USF-Notre Dame Game

Submitted by hart20 on

While I wasn't watching the Michigan game yesterday, I spent my time watching the ND game. I talked a ND friend who watched the whole ND game, and I thought I'd post some observations from USF-ND.

1.      Notre Dame Offense

a.       Crist was horrible.  He was late on throws and he just wasn’t accurate. His interception was completely on him, the ball was thrown way behind the receiver.  He was pulled at halftime.  He was 7/15 for 95 yards with 1 pick.

b.      Rees was better than Crist, but not that much better. He was 24/34 for 296 yards, with 2 TDs and 2 picks. His 2nd TD came on when the game was pretty much in hand.  I’d expect Rees to start next weekend.

c.       Cierre Wood (RB) was good. 21 carries for 104 yards, his first time going over 100 yards in 14 games.  3 receptions for 44 yards too.

d.      According to my ND friend, Wood’s back up, Jonas Gray, was horrible. Gray’s stats: 4 carries for 17 yards. He also had a fumble on the goal line that went back for 6.

e.       ND’s O-line let everything through. ND was only sacked 2 times, but it felt like USF was getting pressure at will. My ND friend said that the left side was good but the right side sucked. Look for blitzes to the right side next week.

f.       Michael Floyd was amazing. 12 receptions, 154 yards, 2 TDs. Although the second TD came with the game pretty much in hand. Still that stat line is amazing. He was double covered most of the night too. He’s definitely going to give us trouble next week. Although last year we held him to only 51 yards receiving.

g.       TJ Jones (WR) comes in on rotation, TE goes out he comes in. He’s average. Not going to kill us, but you still have to watch out for him.

h.      Theo Riddick (WR, PR) sucked at everything. He dropped passes, he muffed punts. I think we’ll see someone else returning punts for ND next week.

i.        Eifert (TE) was above average. He dropped some passes, but he had some good catches too. 6 receptions, 93 yards. He’s definitely not Rudolph, but he’s still a threat. I’d say he’s definitely the #2 receiving threat on ND.

2.      Notre Dame Defense

a.       They had some trouble with BJ Daniels, a mobile QB. There were some times he scrambled 5, 6 yards to pick up the first. If it was Denard scrambling on those plays, he could have easily gone for 20.

b.      The zone defense was exploited. There were some holes in the zone. ND friend said it was on the DC, not the players.

c.       ND’s run D was nothing special. They only allowed 3.0 yards a carry, and 126 yards rushing but I think if you looked at rushing outside of the red zone, YPC would jump up. It felt like USF was running the ball for 4, 5 yards outside the red zone but once they got in the red zone, they were stopped.

d.      The Pass D couldn’t stop the out routes. USF had their way with ND on out routes.

e.       The Pass D also gave up no long balls, the longest USF reception was 18 yards.

f.       My ND friend said that Te’o was the best defensive player, but that he didn’t play very well.

g.       My ND friend said the D line was not good enough to stop the run until they got to the goal line, and on passing downs they didn’t get much penetration.

3.      Notre Dame Special Teams

a.       Missed a 30 yard field goal. Their kicker was 18 of 19 last year, so I expect that it was the weather. I’m betting he’ll be better next week.

b.      The punting was terrible. The kicker average 34 yards on the night, but he had a couple of punts around 23 yards each.

c.       The punt returning was not good. 2 punt returns, 2 muffed punts. One was lost, the other recovered for negative yards. Like I said, I expect them to have a different PR next week.

d.      KRs nothing special. Return of about 25 yards each time.

e.       KR and PR coverage was decent. No big plays, but no bad plays either.

4.      Notre Dame Problems

a.       ND friend said offense moved well with Cierre Wood in, and when passes weren’t dropped. The turnovers, 5 of them, killed the offense and lost the game.

b.      The defense was not as good as last year. Out routes killed them. Holes in zone exploited.

c.       The biggest problem was the turnovers. They gave the USF offense great field position. ND had almost double the yardage of USF, but that was because USF probably started close to the 50 yard line most of the time.

d.      Penalties.  8 penalties for 73 yards. And they were bad, really stupid penalties too. Pass interference and late hits.

5.      Brian Kelly is a major douche bag.

a.       I know this was already covered earlier, but damn! Before I hated Brian Kelly because he was ND’s coach, now I hate Brian Kelly because he’s Brian Kelly.

b.      My ND friend refuses to see it though, I tried everything to show him the light, but to no avail.

c.       Him being an asshole like that is going to come back and bite him in the ass.

d.      I really like this line from MGoBlog user Yeoman, ”…but I think the fundamental difference is that when Bo yelled at you it was because you'd let down your teammates. When Kelly yells it's because you've let down Brian Kelly.”

6.      My ND friend on Damefan’s blog: “This shit is weird.”

I think that covers most of it. The players on ND's offense to watch for next week are definitely Michael Floyd and Cierre Wood. On ND' s defense, Manti Te'o. If you disagree with something, if I'm wrong about something, or if I missed something let me know so I can fix it or add it.

I think UTL will be a close game, but I think that we'll win. We'll see a lot of blitzes to the right of ND's line, and most of their yards will come from the air. I think we'll be able to run it fairly well and that Denard will be able to get some long scrambles on both broken plays and designed plays. A significant amount of our yards will come from the air, if I had to guess.

I called USF to beat ND, and I'm calling their final record to be 8-4. I'm predicting us to go 10-2, for what it's worth.

Edit: Sorry for the crappy indentation. When I go to fix it, everything is still properly indented.

I disagree that Rees didn't look better than Crist.  The first interception he threw was not his fault, his receiver wasn't looking for the ball and it hit him right in the helmet.  There were times that I didn't think he could miss his receivers, partly because he would throw it up for grabs to Floyd who would bail him out, but mostly because he was worlds better than Crist.

I don't think Rees was a great amount better than Crist. Rees' 2nd interception was definitely on Rees. And, like you said, a lot of his completions just came from throwing it somewhere in the vicinity of Floyd and having Floyd bail him out.

I agree with much of that. I would disagree about Rees though. He actually looked really good. He made a lot of perfect passes into good coverage. He only really made one really bad throw. the first interception he threw was off the helmet of his receiver who wasn't paying attention. The other interception he threw was into double coverage, and there really wasn't anywhere for him to fit the ball in, just a bad decision.

The turnovers are slightly overrated in this game. I heard Kirk Herbstreit say that the fumble return was a 14 point swing. He fails to realize that it was a 3rd down and goal, so even if there was no fumble, they probably would have settled for a field goal attempt. You can't say that it was a 14 point swing. 10 tops. Same thing with the interception in the endzone. That was a 3rd down play. Even if it were an incomplete pass, Notre Dame would have settled for a FG attempt. Obviously turnovers were a big deal in the game, but it isn't as bad as some people are making it out to be.

Also, the reason USF picked off a couple of those passes (not the one off the helmet) was because ND was making risky throws all game. They were high risk/high reward plays. When you are consistently squeezing the ball passed defenders and dropping perfect passes in between a linebacker and a safety, it isn't always going to go your way. If you take the incredible plays, you also have to take the interceptions as a natural consequence rather than a fluke (or cheap) play.

Yardage is also overrated. It was clear that USF was playing a very conservative game offensively, and their strategy on defense was to not give up the big play. Holtz even said as much: "we took the mindset, bend but don't break, bend but don't break, let's not give up the home run ball. I think Michael Floyd is a great player on film. I think he's a lot better than he is on film. I think he is one of the special players in college football. I think he's a difference maker. He is special. And because of him when we just turned and said let's try and make sure we keep him in front of them. Even trying to do that he still caught one later. But the whole mindset was bend, don't break. Our motto was make them snap it again, don't just let them in the end zone, make them snap it again. I don't care if it's a 20 play drive. They haven't scored yet if they don't cross that end zone. Don't let them in the end zone, make them drive the field, don't give them anything cheap. "

You can't measure the players performance purely on yards. Yards aren't all that important. Especially when you're playing with a lead and your trying to bleed the clock. Obviously ND played a great game - particularly Floyd and Rees. But the game wasn't as lopsided as the stats would indicate.

Good teams seem to get better every week.  I expect Michigan and Notre Dame to play better next week.  It will be interesting to view the game results against this report.

As a side note...  When I see a coach blowing up on the sideline, I get the feeling he did not have his team prepared.

Michigan is going to build on their success, while ND is going to regroup to figure out where they stand.  I like our chances.

Maybe I'm taking too much of a glass-half-empty approach, but I don't think ND's loss is good news for us. If they lost to USF because they suck, then we don't gain much from beating yet another overrated, overhyped ND team (and we would lose much more if such a team beat us). If they lost to USF because they just came out flat, then they'll be extra motivated against us.

I don't know what it is, but ND's chronic mediocrity just frustrates me.

And let's be honest with ourselves: we didn't shut down Floyd last year. I think it became apparent from the rest of the season's results that our secondary couldn't shut down anybody. Crist's injury and the poor play of ND's backups kept Floyd from being a factor.

I feel really bad for Jonas Gray. I have always been rooting him on through college because he's from michigan and it would cool to see a guy from michigan make an impact to nd football. That aside I still dislike ND.

And for the whole Brian Kelly situation, there are ways you can and cannot compare it to Bo. I asked my dad, who played for Bo, if Bo ever got up in his face and called him an asshole and stuff. He told me he did all the time, but it was for motivation. Bo was someone you didn't want to let down, like a fatherly figure to my dad and all the other players he coached. The thing is Brian Kelly might not be looked at as a 'fatherly figure' by his players, so in turn his tyrant could be looked at as mocking and being a jackass. And you have to remember, if it wasnt caught on camera people wouldnt have known/cared about the incident. All im looking forward (and hoping) for is Notre Dame to get a good old fashioned ass kicking.

I have faith in Mattison to make all the ingame adjustments that can be made.  He can only do so much, but it sure does help to have an NFL defensive mind in there to know when to blitz and when to stay back.

I have a co-worker that is a ND fan and gave him some shit today and he told me he has already given up on their season.  If we stay focused and play fantastic defense Michigan should win 31-14 on Saturday.  That's my prediction.

I have a colleague in Switzerland who is die hard ND fan, who basically said the same thing.  He is almost greatful that he won't need to find a way to watch their games overseas.  Although, we'll see if they ND somehow wins the game, his story will change.

As for Brian Kelly.  I don't think his tirade makes him a bad coach.  It is amusing to watch, but I think being overblown.  I also don't think it means he didn't prepare his team properly.  Sometimes no matter how hard you work, you can have a day like that.

And, I agree with an earlier poster, I would rather that ND wins that game if only because we now gain less from beating ND and certainly lose more if we lose the game.

I assume we will be favored by the oddsmakers.
