Obama Congratulates JMo

Submitted by bballislife22 on

Jordan just tweeted a picture of a congratulatory letter that Barack Obama sent him for his graduation.

"A big thank you to @BarackObama for the congratulations that was sent to my house #Humbled #Inspired pic.twitter.com/WlB0aEIvE8"

Really cool to see our student athletes receiving attention from our President, especially one as deserving as Jordan!!!

(don't know how to embed the picture, if somebody else could that'd be awesome)

I wonder who else got that letter? Surely it couldn't be sent to every college graduate, but at the same time it's pretty clearly a form letter. Maybe Jordan was a part of a certain program with ties to the gov or something like that.

Regardless, super cool. I want a letter like that when I graduate.

I wish people would take their political sarcastic bullshit elsewhere and just realize that it's pretty fucking cool for a college graduate to receive a congrats from the President no matter who he is and what party he represents.

Just be happy for J-Mo...none of us care about your personal political views and it's against board rules to break out into a discussion about them anyway. So save it.

Sent by a third party company. I have a few of those. My partner has an original signature of JFK thanking him for his time devoted to the campaign. Now, that is cool no matter which political party you belong.

Because champswest and IndyWolverine are apparently irritated at the fact that a graduate of the University of Michigan received congratulations from this particular President. Why they would be irritated they don't say, other than JMo is a super secret CIA assassin.

How 'bout that finish to the Indy 500? Awesome stuff.

Regardless of whether you agree or disagree with President Obama's politics or policies (and I'm inclined to believe that President Obama might be happy to say, "Go Blue!"), a shoutout from the President of the United States to a University of Michigan graduate would seem to be a "good deal for Michigan."

I got a letter from the White House once, a couple decades ago (as part of a school project where we had to write to the President).  The form of the letter looked just like the one in the OP.  I don't think there was anything below the President's signature.  No idea why there would be anything blurred out on this one.

Ehhh I hate to say it but that letter seems really generic as if it were sent to numerous people. However, the individuals that did get it are still most likely of a very select group. So it's still nice that JMo is getting this type of recognition for all he's accomplished as a student-athlete.

On the other hand, if there's any college graduate out there that does deserve a congratulatory letter in which the president took the time to personally write, Jordan would be that guy. I mean, the dude graduated with a masters in engineering while committing probably 30 hours a week for basketball. Now that's impressive. While I was at Michigan it felt like I was always studying; the idea of playing a sport on top of that just seemed quixotic.

Well I guess I was under the assumption that Obama actually signed each of these letters. If that's actually the case, there's no way in hell he'd sign one for every damn college graduate meaning there had to have been some factor(s) determining who to send them to. It is totally possible though the letter JMo got is just one of thousands of photocopies. But that would be unfortunate.

They aren't personally written. They're form letters. All politicians do them. The standard procedure is that a person is nominated for accomplishing something unique, significant, or good, the staff reviews it, and if it's approved, a specific letter will be written based off of a prexisting template.

That doesn't take away from the importance of it though. It still has to be approved and then each one is still individually written. The form letter part just signifies that it's based on a loose, preexisting structure. It's still an honor to receive and is pretty swell for JMo!

He is an amazing young man, look forward to hearing about all his future successes. On a side note, my wife and I just got home from the hospital with our healthy new son, also named Jordan!

It should surprise no one that an outstanding Michigan student athlete would receive this sort of recognition.  The president, after all, answers to the space emperor.  We all know who that is.

When I was in sixth grade, I received a letter from President Reagan because I met the national standard for physical performance in gym class or some such thing. I'm not saying this is the same thing, but I wonder if it was due to an all - academic team or something. Again, not taking anything away from JMo, I sure as shoot didn't get this letter when I graduated, I'm just curious if this was due to an achievement he met, and not just a friendly hello, the old fashioned way.

I showed the letter to my 7 year old to give an example of hard work paying off. He paused briefly, looked up and gave me the "Its Michigan Fer Gods Sake" expression and went back to his cheerios.
