NYTimes on Steve Fisher
Today at page 1 of nytimes.com and presumably in tomorrow's print edition, there's an article on Steve Fisher, entitled "Redemption for a Coach. See http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/06/sports/ncaabasketball/06sdsu.html?src… . As you can guess from the title, it's mostly favorable.

Fisher did a great job after Bo fired Fisher's good friend, Bill Frieder, coaching us to the National Championship.
Several ironies form a familiar backstory, given that Fisher coaches--yeah, you guessed it--San Diego State. He lives near his old friend Bill Frieder, the coach he replaced. When Bo fired Frieder because Frieder had announced, just before the NCAA tournament began, that he had accepted the HC job at Arizona State, Bo fired him, uttering the "I want a Michigan Man coaching Michigan" line. And now comes Brady Hoke from--where else? San Diego State-- to pick up the warcry at his first news conference, growling "this is Michigan!"
Perhaps a final irony is Rich Rodriguez' memorable lament, "I want to be a Michigan Man!" I hope that Rich, like Fisher, will find his redemption in a national contender.

I always thought that Bo's proclamation was blown out of proportion a bit. There isn't an AD in the country who would have let Frieder get away with what he tried to do. And the fact that the job he was taking, Arizona State, was a lateral move at best, indicates that there were probably pre-existing tensions between Frieder and Bo.

I went to the SDSU at Colorado St game this week. It was a lot of fun watching how animated he was on the court, screaming at players, stomping his feet, and standing almost at the 3 pt line a few times as play was going on. I'm glad he's doing so well.

Actually a well-balanced article overall.
Best thing he did with the Fab-5 was getting them to play team defense, which was not their proclivity as individuals. It was the difference between wining 1-2 games in the tournament and getting to the final.
