This morning's Times has an eight-column story accompanied by an eight column black and white picture. Here's a link to the on-line version (with a color pic): http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/11/sports/hockey/11hockey.html?_r=1&ref=s...
NYTimes on the Big Chill
is getting good press. Even here in Pennsyltucky people are excited to see it on their Big Ten Channel. I was approached last night about it and was caught by surprised that they even knew about it. Very good move by the athletic department. Hope it continues. Even better, will be beating the dumb out of Sparty.
Friday night. They are here once every two years. There is an unused ice rink and 110,000 seats available and the NHL doesn't take advantage of the opportunity. A Friday night game between two Original 6 teams in front of 110,000 fans. What a PR coup that would be. But...yawn...the NHL missed it.
Not surprising to me... this is a league that over the years has killed two of the most intense rivalries in sports—Detroit vs Toronto and Detroit vs Montreal—in favor of games against a collection of expansion teams that nobody cares about, with the single exception of Colorado. It would be analogous to the NFL putting an end to the Lions' rivalries with the Packers and the Bears.
As for the Wings v Habs at the Big House, I hope they get another chance. (A Big Chill every two years is an excellent idea.) But cordon off a section of the seating, as Michigan deserves the attendance world record, and shouldn't allow anyone (even the Wings) to snatch it away.
when the commish comes from the NBA and the greatest rivalry, Lakers/Celtics is also only played twice a year.
At least with the NBA in every other team's building at least once a season. This is a concept that should be a given with any regular season that lasts 80 some games.
the Lions did a fine enough job of that on their own. Here's hoping Suh and Stafford lead a new charge into relevance for you guys.
Didn't the Avalanche just move from Winnepeg and change their name? I didn't think colorado was a true expansion team, which further supports your claim that nobody cares about the expansion teams.
heh...glad i'm not the only person from pennsyltucky on here...
Pennsylvania-Philly+Pittsburgh+Alabama in the middle
That's a lot of dumb to deal with in just one game.
Between last nights BBall game on Big 10 and Soccer on the Duece and now today's Hockey game again on Big 10 Michigan's been seen on TV more frequently than George Lopez.
And 100x more entertaining to boot.
I wish I could be there! Just have to watch on TV and at least stay warm. Gotta find the silver lining somewhere.
Silver lining can be found at the top of an ice cold can that will not be available to those attending the game.
Come on now, big puffy jackets are super conducive to contraband. ;)
What a great experience it'll be and be a part of history as well. Oh well, at least the weather here in Vegas will be 68 degrees.
For all of us UM fans, but what a neat weekend for football recruiting: the BB games last night where the young Woverines really stepped up and now 110,000 watching hockey against the archenemy Sparties in the Big House. Where do I sign a committment?
