No mention of Harbaugh--wtf?!? Maybe we can break from the mold of inexperienced ADs. I guess I knew it was 4 straight but seeing that makes me wonder why

because they, unlike our delusion fanbase, realize Harbaugh will never coach here. Why waste the time writing about something that will never happen? It'd be devoting the time and effort to explain why Tiger Woods will be our next head coach.

I'd absolutely love it if Harbaugh were our next coach, I just don't see how it'll happen. The people in charge at our great university have shown that they are completely incompetent, and Harbaugh wants to win a Super Bowl. Those two facts make me a girl believer that Harbaugh will never coach here

Unfortunately for 1936 he doesn't realize there are long time posters that havr taken on the Harbaugh contrarian role in addition to providing other opinions. Poor guy isn't even unique. Not that he will be around that long but he can be the board's first poster to demand Harbaugh's firing as Michigan coach.

Thanks for linking to this, OP.  I don't get to the NYT website on a regular basis.

But if everyone in the world would just click into MGoBlog at least weekly then an article like this wouldn't be needed.  I like the article because it seems to summarize what's been going on recently and the NYT is obviously widely distributed.  I'm assuming any publicity is better than no publicity.

I'm still waiting on a good reason why people on this site care so much about who the AD is. By all accounts, Hackett is a perfect man for the job, and he has the perfect past experience to make sure the department runs smoothly in the future.

Otherwise, why do you actually care who is in charge of the AD? Boredom? Because someone in the media convinced you that it is something you actually should care about so you read all of their articles pertaining to the subject in the future?

The AD clearly influences athletics programs. This effect is most obvious (to me, an outsider) in football, where goodwill turned into whatever we have now as a result of losing, ticket prices, erosion of game day tradition in favor of corporate marketing, etc. Care about any of those things makes care about the AD reasonable.

All these other changes we've been complaining about are happening & have been happening at every major program across the country. Where the team is winning, people grumble & that is all. Where the changes coincide with an epic 7-year collapse of a traditional power program, AD's get fired

I'll give Schlissel the benefit of the doubt for now because he hasn't actually done anything and it's all words but I don't like what I'm hearing about balance and scaling back athletics. what I want my president to say is that "Our university has been a national leader in academics and athletics for over 100 years and while academically we have remained a nationally elite and prestigious university, our athletics has fallen on tough times. During my time as president I will make sure we will be the best in every aspect of our university."

I vote for you as our new Prez.  Seriously though that statement you've made is exactly right and seems simple enough.  I'd only amend it in that UM has been an academic leader in this country for nearly 150 years...dating back to when Victor Vaughan started working as dean of the UM medical school to move medicine away from bleeding patients to following the scientific method.

I'm pretty sure I've seen him say something about scaling back athletics. I've definitely seen him say that he wants a balance between athletics and academics which essentially means the same thing. You can't have a "balance" if the football team is getting all of the media attention because they're winning while the media isn't paying attention to the chemistry labs or medical school.

If Schlissel tries to scale back athletics here, he'll lose a lot of support here very quickly. Virtually all support, and he'll have a new wave of students, alums and regents calling for his head. There's a culture here at Michigan of having excellence not only in academics, but also athletics. Schlissel knows how much money is brought into this university by way of athletics. He'd be a fool to throw that all away.

If anything, I honestly would wonder why he wouldn't want to ensure we get the best possible football coach and AD. Wouldn't having those, barring any scandals, allow him to focus more of his time on academics since we'll have competent athletic leadership in place? He could just step back and let them do their thing. If he allows us to hire a lame duck AD and football coach, in about 3-4 years he'll be right back where he started.

The next UM football coach will be paid somewhere in the middle of the B10.  This disqualifies the Harbaughs and Miles from coming here.  Schlissel is not going to kill the program but just the salaries of its leaders.  This is only a problem if you think that football is all UM has to offer.

We can pay Brady multiple millions of dollars but we can't pay a much better coach more because we don't want to overvalue athletics? Seems like it is a bit too late for that when you just look at current coach salaries.

Michigan has never been a NW, Brown, or Harvard type athletic program. When Bo was here we were getting the best football players and they weren't all engineering students or pre-med. On the other side, Bo wouldn't put up with Jameis Winston esque guys just to win.

Yes this is a major problem. I wanted Brandon gone because he messed up with Hoke and was an ass that was becoming a major sore spot in getting things done by sitting in on coaches meetings etc. The problem wasn't that we were paying too much for a DC or OC. You need to do that in today CFB and the money comes from a different place than the academic money. If Schlissel forced our athletic department to pay middle of the big ten prices he'll be forced out Brandon style by the university. He won't do it anyways because he's not stupid.
