because they, unlike our delusion fanbase, realize Harbaugh will never coach here. Why waste the time writing about something that will never happen? It'd be devoting the time and effort to explain why Tiger Woods will be our next head coach.
November 28th, 2014 at 3:14 PM ^
Someone who calls our fanbase delusional claims that Jim Harbaugh coaching Michigan is as likely as Tiger Woods coaching Michigan. And we are the delusional ones. Got it.

The people in charge at our great university have shown that they are completely incompetent,Really? How exactly have either Schlissel or Hackett shown this?

Thanks for linking to this, OP. I don't get to the NYT website on a regular basis.
But if everyone in the world would just click into MGoBlog at least weekly then an article like this wouldn't be needed. I like the article because it seems to summarize what's been going on recently and the NYT is obviously widely distributed. I'm assuming any publicity is better than no publicity.

Good in-depth info, good read. Just not a big fan of the speculation...

Why do we have OSU and MSU flags flying at Michigan Stadium?
November 28th, 2014 at 2:52 PM ^
November 28th, 2014 at 2:54 PM ^
It looks dumb to have rival flags at our stadium.
November 28th, 2014 at 2:57 PM ^
I know MSU has our flag in their stadium. I'm not sure about Ohio.
November 28th, 2014 at 9:55 PM ^
We fly pennants of all the teams of the B1G on game day. You can kind of see them here:
November 28th, 2014 at 3:05 PM ^
Schools do this everywhere.
Not uncommon to see schools have pennants or banners of their conference foes in their stadium. Yost had all the CCHA schools' logos up on the Yost press box exterior for as long as I can remember
November 28th, 2014 at 6:08 PM ^
that included a close up of the pennants, so this photo of a cake will have to do.
November 28th, 2014 at 2:52 PM ^
I mean, aside from a few years post-9/11, they've only been flying for, oh, about 75 years.
November 28th, 2014 at 3:00 PM ^
They only have had big ten flags up for big ten play and it's happened for probably as long as our stadium has sat there.
November 28th, 2014 at 3:00 PM ^
Those flags have been there forever.
November 28th, 2014 at 5:36 PM ^
Hopefully someday I will make it to a real game.

This move away from tradition. Rivals flags? Non-leather helmets? Forward passes? I miss the good ole days of Michigan football in the 1900s.
Get off my lawn

I loved looking at the flags of the other Big Ten schools. In fact, growing up we had a trash bin in the bathroom with flags from maybe 40 college programs. Not surprisingly, with time on my hands, it didn't take long to memorize all of them.
November 28th, 2014 at 2:52 PM ^
I'm still waiting on a good reason why people on this site care so much about who the AD is. By all accounts, Hackett is a perfect man for the job, and he has the perfect past experience to make sure the department runs smoothly in the future.
Otherwise, why do you actually care who is in charge of the AD? Boredom? Because someone in the media convinced you that it is something you actually should care about so you read all of their articles pertaining to the subject in the future?

I'll give Schlissel the benefit of the doubt for now because he hasn't actually done anything and it's all words but I don't like what I'm hearing about balance and scaling back athletics. what I want my president to say is that "Our university has been a national leader in academics and athletics for over 100 years and while academically we have remained a nationally elite and prestigious university, our athletics has fallen on tough times. During my time as president I will make sure we will be the best in every aspect of our university."
November 28th, 2014 at 3:01 PM ^
he will be smacked down. Hundreds of millions of dollars will prevent any reduction. People need to chill out here. Schlissel is aware of how important athletics is to UM. He won't and can't reduce athletics. James Duderstadt tried 20 years ago and was promptly told talk to the hand because the face ain't listenin'.
November 28th, 2014 at 3:45 PM ^
Yep, I never understand why people act like Schlissel can do whatever he wants completely unchecked. He has regents and donors to answer to, and they'll have no qualms of removing him if he's going to try to gut Michigan athletics (which I highly doubt he's trying to do).
November 28th, 2014 at 3:01 PM ^
I vote for you as our new Prez. Seriously though that statement you've made is exactly right and seems simple enough. I'd only amend it in that UM has been an academic leader in this country for nearly 150 years...dating back to when Victor Vaughan started working as dean of the UM medical school to move medicine away from bleeding patients to following the scientific method.
November 28th, 2014 at 3:04 PM ^
He said pretty much exactly that several weeks ago.
November 28th, 2014 at 6:43 PM ^
Don't introduce logic and facts into the "Schlissel hates athletics" meme!
November 28th, 2014 at 3:18 PM ^
November 28th, 2014 at 3:30 PM ^
I'm pretty sure I've seen him say something about scaling back athletics. I've definitely seen him say that he wants a balance between athletics and academics which essentially means the same thing. You can't have a "balance" if the football team is getting all of the media attention because they're winning while the media isn't paying attention to the chemistry labs or medical school.
November 28th, 2014 at 3:48 PM ^
That's not at all what he means. He wants excellence in both facets. Michigan has always been, and continues to be, an excellent academic institution and he's seeking excellent athletics to match our academics. "Balance" does not mean "scaling back".
November 28th, 2014 at 6:44 PM ^
Schlissel has never said anything about scaling back athletics.
November 28th, 2014 at 3:40 PM ^
If anything, I honestly would wonder why he wouldn't want to ensure we get the best possible football coach and AD. Wouldn't having those, barring any scandals, allow him to focus more of his time on academics since we'll have competent athletic leadership in place? He could just step back and let them do their thing. If he allows us to hire a lame duck AD and football coach, in about 3-4 years he'll be right back where he started.

Well, it's a good thing he's never said anything about scaling back athletics then.
November 28th, 2014 at 3:34 PM ^
The next UM football coach will be paid somewhere in the middle of the B10. This disqualifies the Harbaughs and Miles from coming here. Schlissel is not going to kill the program but just the salaries of its leaders. This is only a problem if you think that football is all UM has to offer.

November 28th, 2014 at 3:46 PM ^
Michigan has never been a NW, Brown, or Harvard type athletic program. When Bo was here we were getting the best football players and they weren't all engineering students or pre-med. On the other side, Bo wouldn't put up with Jameis Winston esque guys just to win.

November 28th, 2014 at 3:43 PM ^
Yes this is a major problem. I wanted Brandon gone because he messed up with Hoke and was an ass that was becoming a major sore spot in getting things done by sitting in on coaches meetings etc. The problem wasn't that we were paying too much for a DC or OC. You need to do that in today CFB and the money comes from a different place than the academic money. If Schlissel forced our athletic department to pay middle of the big ten prices he'll be forced out Brandon style by the university. He won't do it anyways because he's not stupid.

The next UM football coach will be paid somewhere in the middle of the B10.Tell me more, Nostradamus.

We can pay $10 million a year and be just fine
