NY Post (via Dodd): Big East Interest in TCU

I assume if TCU is leaving the MWC it will be for the Big 12 - so, does it even matter if the Big East is getting its P.R. machine in motion?

This is like the fat Dungeons And Dragons dork letting it be known that he has "interest" in asking out the head cheerleader.    (Sorry if that analogy brings back bad memories for some of you...)

Please, the Big East has an automatic BCS spot and wide open competition. You don't think that would be attractive to a MWC team? If the conference is garbage, TCU should be excited about the opportunity to go to a BCS bowl every year.

When Syracuse, Pitt, West Virginia, and UConn all go to the Big Ten, ACC, or SEC, the remaining teams can join with what's left of the Big 12 after Texas, OU, Ok State, and TT inevitably bolt for the Pac-10 and A&M bolts for the SEC.

Louisville, Cincinnati, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Iowa State, South Florida, Central Florida, TCU, Houston, Memphis and become the Big Midwest, ConferenceUSA 2, or the Big 12 Part Deux.

I honestly think that the Mountain West is better than the Big East, and even more so with the addition of Boise, Fresno, and Nevada (even though they lose Utah). If TCU stays, the MWC very well could steal the Big East's automatic bid when the next BCS agreement is set up (don't know when that is though)

What I found very funny was the title of the article - it says "Big East considers adding TCU." Umm, Dear Big (L)East, TCU is the hot commodity, not you. That's like saying some uber-dork grad student from the math dept (no offense intended) is "considering" adding Marisa Miller as his wife. Umm, yeah, doesn't really work that way...

I would be really surprised if anything actually came of that. Not that I'm an expert or anything, but that just seems like it cost a crapload of money (with all the travelling) and just doesn't really make sense. I doubt TCU would even reciprocate the interest, anyway.

as Arte Johnson would say.  IME the teleology dictates 4 super conferences of 16 teams each, with the natural conferences to be killed off being the Big 12 and Big East.  So, adding another team to the Big East would seem to make that more difficult.

On the other hand, right now there are 67 BCS teams (65+ND+Utah), which means 3 schools get left standing when the music stops.  Add TCU and there are 4.  That could make some of the marginal schools nervous and more willing to jump to a more stable place.

Texicans pride themselves on being a "whole 'nother country," so maybe it would be better if all of the Texas teams just formed their own conference.  Texas, A&M, Tech, Houston, TCU, SMU, Baylor, UTEP, and Rice, with something called "North Texas" bringing up the rear, would give them ten teams.  Also, they could convince two 1-AA programs, like Sam Houston and Texas Southern, to upgrade to 12 teams.

The presence of Texas and A&M would be enough to give them autobid status, and they could have their little playoff every year with 12 teams.  It would certainly make the current landscape even more interesting.

Perhaps this is a case of miscommunication between the source and the writer. Maybe the source said ECU as in East Carolina (which already had been the rumor along with UCF, Memphis, Temple, Notre Dame and Villanova)?

As far as the distance factor, the Big East already has teams in Wisconsin (Marquette), Chicago (Depaul), Florida (USF) and used to be home to Miami, Virginia Tech, Temple and BC (obviously as you know). Suggesting that they couldn't land some solid programs is a big statement.

I'd be willing to bet that ECU, Temple, Villanova and UCF will be joining the Big East before long, with Marquette and Depaul being dropped and Temple just playing football in the Big East.
