Nussmeier OC Intro Press Conference

Submitted by WolverineLake on

I know it's been a few days since the press conference, but I'm still pretty excited about the hire.  I hadn't seen it posted anywhere, so I thought I'd ... like... do that.

Had already seen it but others may not have.

Personally, I'm not worried that this guy might be gone in 3-4 years to be a HC somewhere.  I'd rather have a damn good and successful coach for 3-4 years who goes on to be a HC than a mediocre OC for a decade.

If he does well enough, they might try to convince him to be a head coach in waiting. Not that it worked well for Texas when they tried it, but it worked out ok for FSU. Brady is 55, so he might not want to coach forever. Although I am sure he would want to stay around the program like Bo and Lloyd.

He inspires someone on staff or on the team or a GA to be like him and be fired up and, you know... good?

It would be awesome to start a coaching tree that includes more than just a dying seedling. That's what seems to happen at schools with good coaches. They train good players to become good coaches and they train new assistants to be better assistants.

I agree. If he does well for a few years and leaves that's fine with me for a few reasons

  • Stablizes the offense for someone else to come in
  • DB has shown he's willing to open the checkbook so we could probably steal a similar replacement
  • If he's successful, great because now he's in the Michigan coaching tree in someway - maybe a HC candidate here down the road?

I just hope the NFL doesn't try to poach him after just a year or two

But if folks in the NFL were looking to poach him, isn't now as good a time as any?  But I'm with you; I hope he does all those things you referenced, and I hope he's part of the UM staff for awhile.

I wonder how short his leash will be among the UM fans.  He has a great resume and recent past with tremendous success.  But we've seen how impatience can lead to mutiny of sorts with fans whose expectations are high and patience low.

Given how things have gone, I believe that Nuss will escape blame if things go sour.
Problems would be perceived by the fanbase (and, I think, by third parties) to be a systemic issue stemming from Hoke.
I don't want it to happen and I don't even think it's likely, but I could see a scenario where Hoke is forced out and Nuss replaces him.

I can think of right off hand is an NFL example, Jerry fired Wade Phillips and promoted the HC in waiting, OC Jason Garrett.  Of course in that instance Wade Phillips was both the HC and DC and it was perceived that it was the D that let the team down.  So out with the DC who just happened to be the HC.

IMO, the only way Nuss could possibly be elevated to HC is if there is some sort of severe scandal which doesn't touch him.  Simply having another poor season won't do it unless it is directly attributable to the D and can be laid at the feet of not just Mattison, but Hoke as well.

I shudder to conceive of it.

Doubt very much he stays four years, and even three I think is no better then 50-50. Is it possible he bolts after two? Sure. Just hope he made some commitment to stay at least two. Have to give Hoke credit, Nussmaier seems, at least at present to be an ideal HC candidate at a big program. Young, ex athlete, articulate, good recruiter. If he does well, there will be at least some calling for him to replace Hoke unless of course our record is lights out in 2015. Will 3 losses in 2015 be one too many. Surely, 4 will be.

That would be ugly.

UM loses three games in which the offense produced and either the defense hemorraged or Hoke made some weird coaching decisions and/or messed up the clock management.  Then other schools come sniffing around Nuss.

How many UM fans, with the memory of a great coach in Jim Harbaugh not being given a shot at the job in '08 b/c of HC inexperience will toss that concern aside and clamor for Nuss to be promoted?

That type of scenario seems a little farfetched.  First, if we go 9-3, I don't think that many people are going to call for Hoke to be fired.  There might be some but not a critical mass.  9-3 represents improvement over this year.  If the D is the problem, people will simply call for Mattison's ouster (and he's closing in on retirement age anyway).  But I doubt the D will be that big of a problem, given that we return a lot of talent and Mattison's good track record.

Many fans have criticized Hoke for being too much of a delegator, but now we're seeing some of the benefits of that.  Nussmeier, I'm sure, was attracted by the freedom Hoke is going to offer him.  Another HC might not offer that.  In fact, there is some buzz that he also reached out to Brian Kelly around the same time, and decided Michigan was a better fit.

Were people really that upset about the press conference? Teams usually hold these with a big coordinator move but the stuff I've been reading in Free Press (green wall) and message boards (RCMB-I know, I know) make it seem like it was a disaster and hoards of Michigan fans were calling sports rags in protest. I'm out of state and I didn't watch but it was just a stupid, run of the mill presser right?

Is that Hoke didn't take any questions. So because Hoke didn't want to talk about his friend losing his job and didnt want to negatively criticize his friend to the press, everyone jumped to the conclusion Hoke is nothing more than Brandon's puppet. Which, you know, totally doesn't make sense because Hoke is a football coach, not a human being.

That's what I figured. I got sucked in to a way too long thread battle on the RCMB with a couple of those idiots that don't realize that they themselves had a presser last year for the hire of Warner/Bollman. 13-1 season and they still have 5-6 threads about Michigan on their front page. I hope Nuss knocks the aura of invincibility off that defense that Borges helped build.

It should be illegal to be smart of you're hot - support our Sparty cheerleaders! 5). How drunk do you have to be to get kicked in the nuts and not feel it? 6). Brady Hoke = Fred Flintstone 7). Al Borges game planning appreciation thread In all honesty RCMB runs a good site but they have to spend ninety percent of their time policing their site like its Al Jazeera

were some interesting themes to his answers. One was using practice to simulate games so there wasn't a fall off on game day...this was probably a huge concern of Hokes. I still remember Borges Ohio pregame presser. He seemed at a real loss to explain the breakdowns.
