Nuss bringing over one of his GAs from Alabama

Submitted by woomba on

A source tells @coachingsearch that Alabama offensive GA John Van Dam is heading to Michigan as the offensive quality control assistant.

...in a quality control type of role.  His twitter has a pic of the Big House on it so I guess it's pretty much official.

A former MSU-walk on QB so I'd imagine he'd have good ties to the area.

This is fantastic news.  What this means is that we are getting a young, family oriented (from his twitter), forward thinking, and tech savvy individual to serve as a 24/7 extra pair of strategic eyes for the staff, looking out for any possible advantage we could be missing out on.  Also, he's a former walk on quarterback at a D1 school, not to mention his job as a GA under Coach Nuss at Bama... should be a knowledgeable fella well suited to doing the type of analytics necessary for peak competition in the modern era.

Often, quality control coaches are heavily involved in scouting other teams' film weeks in advance, preparing the scout team, and also self scouting to reduce weakness and predictability.  This is a great pickup!

Welcome aboard John!  Go Blue!

Excellent. Does anyone know whether or not the staff Pre Nuss had a "quality control" coach? I am curious because there has never been much talk about that at Michigan. I personally love what a quality control coach brings, it's really going to make our offense so much more efficient in a number of ways.

Last I heard about quality control coaches were from the Rich Rod era.  IIRC, they were the ones overseeing summer practice sessions that got us in trouble with the NCAA with number of coaches that can attend summer events... or something to that effect.

Haven't heard about them in the Hoke era, but I imagine there were some in place.

The current listing from coaches on down through administrative support is here - LINK

There isn't anyone specifically listed as a QC person right now, although we do have four football analysts and a separate video coordinator, so I wonder if the duties were dispersed among different personnel. I would imagine that some of this fell on the grad assistants too, but I could be wrong there. In any case, I like the idea of having someone specifically devoted to this.

I dont' have time for some piddly little 3 star QC guy.  He needs to get in and contribute early and not spend a couple years "Filling Out" or "Learning the Ropes".  Better have at least 4 stars.

Didn't know what a Quality Control Coach does? Well now you do...

the QCC doesn't really do much coaching at all. They spend all day multitasking, breaking down film up to five weeks in advance and analyzing data. They work all hours, in hotel lobbies, on airplanes and at their team's headquarters producing reports for their Head Coach. They do get to do some coaching though. The QC coaches often run the "Scout" team in practices. From their extensive film work and breaking down plays, the QCC can be a great help preparing their team because they know the tendencies of their opponents. They make sure the Scout teams give the starters an accurate look at what they'll face on Sunday in practice during game weeks.

I went to MSU and my roommate always went as John Van Damn for Halloween. He wore an MSU practice jersey and walked around with a clipboard and a water bottle full of vodka.

Wouldn't mind if Nuss brought as many people as he could from Tuscaloosa, including players and recruits

Good get.  Luther Van Dam was a solid defensive coordinator for the Minnesota State Screaming Eagles in the early 90s.  I wonder if Dauber is the next hire...
