So because you don't care, no one else should care?

The reading comprehension is strong with this one.

Numbers were on Michigan helmets from the late 50s until Bo came in (1968). I'm guessing that Bo removed the numbers to make room for the stickers (or maybe he didn't like numbers on helmets?).
I was a sophomore when Bo got hired, so the numbers on the helmets look really traditional to me.
And if the players like them, why not? Tradition! Old school look. Very cool. Now I want the gray facebars...

According to legend, Bo abolished the gray facemasks because he didn't like us having any of Ohio's colors on our uniform.

I love your comment becuase I was a student in the helmet sticker era. Desmond Howard won a Heisman with helmoet stickers. It is "my" tradition.
However, I hate your post since it reminds me that I am an old fart.

Is this the surprise Desmond was hinting at on GameDay?

Don't mind it at all. Let's see how often - if it's too often, maybe I'll be unhappy. I agree, it shoudl be very occasional and possibly some reason given for why.
I'm watching now and it still looks like my Wolverines.

Facemasks are now blue, not grey, FWIW.

They're wearing them the rest of the conference season??? WTF?
October 1st, 2011 at 12:21 PM ^
TV announcers say the numbers will be on through the conference season. Players requested them after liking them during the ND game.
October 1st, 2011 at 12:21 PM ^
Just heard on BTN it's for all conference games

"rest of the confernce season"
well then....
If the players like it, and UM promises to beat MSU, OSU, and NEB, then I won't say one word about it. Otherwise, while I honestly don't mind, this makes me nervous. If you can just change the f'n helmet for the season, willy nilly.... what is next?
I will say this, I like the helmet in that it's easier to see who is who on closeup replays. Especially for the UTL jersey which didn't have the # on the sleeve. Now, # on the sleeves, less helpful.
Oh, mgoblog meltdown, begin now:

The players like it. I think that's the thing that gets forgotten in all these "fan" debates. Who cares? If the players enjoy it, I'm fine with it. Pop a Midol (if it pisses you off that much), crack a beer, and enjoy the game.

My preference is no numbers, but if they are going to go with the numbers I'd like to see them go with the same font as the jersey. I don't like the Futura Condensed font of the current helmet numbers. I DO like how they're positioned sort of hanging off the tip of the wing ... if they had little jersey-font numbers, it could look pretty sweet. Would unify the entire, well, uniform even more.
But something tells me that if they showed up next week without the numbers I would feel a little relieved.

FONT FIGHT!!!!

I don't know how I feel about them. That is all...

If we have to do the Uniform Gimmick Thing this is about as good as you can hope for. (Though part of me is curious how metallic gold wings would look. I will now go and burn myself at the stake for heresy.)

Only if we get wolverine claws exploding out of the shoulders of the jersey

that once upon a time, Michigan did have numbers on the helmets. If the players wanted it, I think it is a great motivational tool for Brady to give to the players and it actually gives a bit of an old school feel to the uniforms. Did anyone else notice that the Big Ten flags are on the flagpoles around the top of the stadium again this season? Brady gets it and I love this team.
GO BLUE!

With the numbers. I do NOT support stickers and won't, but if the players are cool with the numbers so am I.

I don't like the numbers, but my opinion doesn't really matter. If it really is because the players like it, I'm okay with the numbers.
October 1st, 2011 at 3:20 PM ^
Don't really care, but I thought it was good for just a one time thing. Loved it for ND..."meh" for Big Ten Games.

We'd find something to bitch about, even today.

The TEAM wanted the numbers, if it brings them together and they play better because of it i think its a great idea.
