I loved those helmets. I am totally good with it. This is a trophy game, and I like that they're doing something a little different.
October 1st, 2011 at 11:19 AM ^
It's not that I don't like them I just think that less is more with the winged helmet.
October 1st, 2011 at 1:23 PM ^
The problem with the helmet numbers is the terrible sans-serif font. (Though I get that it is similar to the one used in the past.) Plus the maize of the numbers doesn't match the maize of the wings/stripes.
October 1st, 2011 at 11:23 AM ^
The more often you do something a little different, sooner or later, doing something a little different becomes the norm. I don't really mind the numbers, but I think it adds to the fears surrounding the "throwback" jerseys in general. That our standard uniforms will become less special.
October 1st, 2011 at 11:29 AM ^
I view this as kind of a football "suit." You wear a suit on special occasions - Under the Lights, trophy games, possibly Ohio. I also don't think our helmets are ever in danger of becoming less special.
October 1st, 2011 at 11:37 AM ^
So, 3-4 times a season? I mean, that's at least a quarter of the season. That makes Michigan's uniform no longer uniform. We lose the identity that comes with it. Now, I'm not saying everyone would suddenly see Michigan's "standard uniform" and think we're Delaware, but it certainly would reduce the tradition that is one of the greatest uniforms in college football.
October 1st, 2011 at 11:50 AM ^
First of all, I'm not talking about every year. I'm talking about THIS year - the year they were introduced. Second of all, the wings on the helmet - which don't go away - are the most significant part of the tradition. The numbers on the helmet were my favorite part of the UTL stuff - hands down. I think two times this year is perfectly reasonable. Three is a little much, but okay. I never said anything about four.
The tradition of our helmets is not in danger at all. They're numbers - the wings aren't going away. Also, you have to look at it this way - you pay Adidas a bunch of money for one game's worth of helmets? I don't think so.
You're also arguing that it ruins OUR tradition by wearing helmets that are based on the helmets that WE wore in 1956.
October 1st, 2011 at 12:13 PM ^
You certainly did not make it clear that this was a "one year thing" and I'd wonder what evidence you'd point to for that statement. You said Under the Lights, trophy games (of which there are two) and maybe Ohio. That's 3 or 4 times. A number that could easily be replicated throughout the season.
You're generally missing the point. I too don't really mind the numbers and it was the only part of the shit we wore vs. ND that I actually was ok with. But everytime you make changes to what has been the Michigan uniform for 40 years, it becomes easier to make the next change. Yes, I don't think the wings will ever go away, but can you honestly say you can't imagine changes to our classic Blue on Maize home unis? That's the problem.
October 1st, 2011 at 12:25 PM ^
I think that's an overly conservative view. "Let's not do something awesome because then it becomes to easy to do things that might not be awesome in the future."
Agree to disagree on this one...
October 1st, 2011 at 12:34 PM ^
What about the tradition for the 70 years that preceeded the last 40? GASP!!!! THAT IMPLIES CHANGE MY HEAD JUST EXPLODED
October 1st, 2011 at 2:46 PM ^
Okay - so they said on the BTN that they're going with the helmet numbers all year. I heard it, and my reaction was completely unexpected: I was TOTALLY fine with it.

Go blue!
October 1st, 2011 at 11:17 AM ^
They just showed it again. It looks like they're staying? I'm not opposed.
October 1st, 2011 at 11:22 AM ^
Love it, though I am also a helmet sticker proponent

For some reason, messing with the helmet is about the only thing that angars me. It's perfect the way it is, don't clutter it up.
October 1st, 2011 at 11:28 AM ^
I will believe it when they are still wearing them at kickoff. Even if they do, I kind of like that look. At least it's still something from the schools tradition, and not that horrid pro combat stuff.
October 1st, 2011 at 11:27 AM ^
Well Dave Brandon is stroking his white cat in the AD office under the Atlantic ocean now (HT to UMich87 for this idea in the "gonna be a surprise" thread)

blue or gray? (pumpkin patches in the rain suck)
October 1st, 2011 at 11:28 AM ^
of pace but I'm not crazy about it for more than 1-2 games per season.
October 1st, 2011 at 11:30 AM ^
I'll say it..."This is Michigan fergodsakes..." Don't screw with our tradition if they start doing this, week in and week out im going to have a sad...
October 1st, 2011 at 11:31 AM ^
According to the twitter, the numbers are to stay for the rest of the B1G season
October 1st, 2011 at 2:43 PM ^
Confirmed on the BTN broadcast around 10:30 left in the 4th quarter.
October 1st, 2011 at 11:31 AM ^
it is being reported on twitter that coaches have decided to wear the numbers on the helmets through the big 10 season

Where's the angry mob meeting up? I have my torch and sack of doorknobs ready.
October 1st, 2011 at 11:36 AM ^
I'll volunteer my place as headquarters. Be sure to bring extra torches and sacks
October 1st, 2011 at 11:39 AM ^
I've got the pitchforks!!!!

Only question is "why ate they doing this"? Maybe the core demographic wants them. #popevil'd
October 1st, 2011 at 11:48 AM ^
The PLAYERS wanted it.
If you are going to riot, will you be directing your anger towards the right target? If so, you'll be yelling at, tarring, and feathering the players.
October 1st, 2011 at 3:48 PM ^
If the players wanted pretty pink ponies on the helmet and orange jerseys, would you be cool with it because "the players wanted it"?
October 1st, 2011 at 4:55 PM ^
If Michigan perviously wore pink ponies on the helmet and orange jerseys for about a decade in the 50's - 60's, and the players wanted to bring that back, I'd be cool with it.
October 1st, 2011 at 5:09 PM ^
Then you're cool with it because of the history, not because the players wanted it.
October 1st, 2011 at 6:10 PM ^
Excellent strawman.

This really pisses me off. You don't need to put a bumper sticker on a Ferrari. Its perfect, just leave it the F alone.

Except it isn't your Ferrari.

Don't mess with the wings or the colors
October 1st, 2011 at 11:43 AM ^
from what i read the players liked them and requested it. if the kids on the team want it it's fine by me.
October 1st, 2011 at 12:19 PM ^
According to yesterday's Unverified Voracity, the players are also the ones who want to hear Pop Evil. Are you still okay with giving the players everything they want?
October 1st, 2011 at 11:45 AM ^
If these "miner" changes help get a couple recruits then so be it.
October 1st, 2011 at 11:51 AM ^
So then they can "mine" for gold and raise more money for the program. Okay, I see where this is going, proceed...*slow convinced nod*
October 1st, 2011 at 11:49 AM ^
Has that retro feel. They don't interfere with the wings so it's good with me
October 1st, 2011 at 11:51 AM ^
As an alum I demand that the regents immediately fire David Brandon and Brady Hoke and bring back Bill Martin and Rich Rodriguez, who never fooled around with the helmets or Pop Evil.
October 1st, 2011 at 11:51 AM ^
I love it! It looks shatp! Nobody cried when Bo put helmet stickers on them! I think it is a great addition to the Winged Helmets!
October 1st, 2011 at 11:52 AM ^
They aren't "messing" with them, they are taking the helmets back to the glory days of M football. I don't think it's necessarily bad to instill the old attitude in the program. It's one more motivational teaching point Hoke can use

I view these throwbacks as completely different than a new design (such as pro combat) which would be horrible. When for a game, a season, or the entire hole tenure, I have no problem embracing the programs rich history.
October 1st, 2011 at 11:56 AM ^
"hole" = "Hoke"

I like it. For those who say "Don't mess with tradition!!" ask yourselves, "Whose tradition?"
Michigan had numbers on the helmets when my Granddad was a fan, they had helmet stickers when my Dad was a fan. The "tradition" you speak of is just your little sliver of the greater Michigan tradition.
October 1st, 2011 at 12:28 PM ^
This cannot be upvoted enough.
October 1st, 2011 at 12:51 PM ^
For those of you complaining about it please shut up. It's not about you or any of us. It is about the players and coaches. If the players want numbers then so be it. Quit bitching about the music and numbers on helmets and what ever else makes you upset. None of us are bigger than the team. I am all for whatever this team wants to do. I personally like the numbers on helmets and dont mind the music. Deal with it and go blue! Thats all.
