Number of expected Transfers?
With the transfer of Cullen Christian, we now have less depth, but we also have one more scholarship available.
I really don't want to know details, but I'd be curious if anyone close to the team expects any more guys to transfer. The silver lining to Cullen leaving is the ability to put out more offers, and to bring in more guys. There are always some guys who don't pan out. It is hard to imagine anyone not wanting to play under our new DC, but hey, it takes all kinds.
seems high
that is the average amount of attrition at an SEC school
that I was checking to see if those were the numbers on Lost.
I've heard only one other name at this point. The coaches are giving the post-spring evaluataions, so now would be the time to see them popping up.
I would like to know the number of scholarships we have for this recruiting class. If I remember it was something like 17 or 18. If these two players actually leave we should be somewhere around 20....right?
It was 16 with the potential for a couple redshirt juniors to not get 5th years. Christian's departure makes it 17 with the potential for more if necessary.

EDIT: These aren't the droids you're looking for................

Vinopal leaving made 16. With Evans back, we had 85 scholarship players on the roster, 15 of them seniors. Vinopal and CC leaving makes it 17 openings.

Bah, I got the edit in before you locked me. I realized I was wrong.

Second time that's happened to me today. I was able to save the first one. Can't come up with anything this time. Oh well...
If a Red Shirt Junior is NOT offered a 5th year on a scholly, can he return to the team as a "walk-on"? I dont think I ever heard of this happening but what if a guy wanted to hang out on the Varsity FB team while still finishing his studies?

That's totally and completely allowed. I've never heard of it happening, either, but there aren't any rules against it.
Christian was at the bottom of the depth chart last year, too. Guys who don't see themselves having any chance to ever get on the field are almost always going to transfer (and you kind of want them to, assuming the coaches have made the right evaluation). I doubt we will see anyone leaving because they clash with the new coaches (just doesn't seem like their personality type) or because things are suddenly much more difficult (there is no "Barwis shock" this time around).
With a second coaching staff getting a look and not being impressed, this just looks like a case of a guy who turns out not to be good enough to play at this level (much like Vlad after CU turned him down or Turner after he flamed out at WVU).
To your question, there are probably a few other guys buried on the depth chart who may want to look elsewhere. Such is the nature of the game. We could probably speculate as to who they might be, but it really doesn't do any good to do so.
I felt really bad for Vlad because I think his offer from Colorado was not held up by the new coaching staff.
You are probably right about it not being an issue with the coaching staff, but who knows. If anyone was going to transfer I thought it would be one of the many slot receivers that are buried on the depth chart.
The thing about slots is that we'll still use them. At SDSU borges used a LOT of 3 WR sets and even went to 4 fairly frequenly. The death of the slot receiver idea seems like good politics to appease the people who hated RR.
I do think we will eventually see the death on the ninja slot receivers. I do think that we will continue to recruit guys that can play in the slot and outside (ex. Stokes). I'm not saying we will get rid of slots, but we might not recruit the little slot ninjas that I have loved seeing on the field the past 3 years.

To each their own, but I would much rather see the pre-RR type of receiver we used to recruit- Avant, Manningham, Breaston, just to name some recent non-#1 WRs. Of course, some Terrell, Walker, Edwards types would be nice too! I just don't feel like any one of our current WRs is a "go to guy" who steps up every game, someone you can always go to on a big 3rd down. Hopefully someone steps up this year.

You shouldn't feel to bad, it was his decision to transfer, he wasn't forced out. And things may have not worked out with Colorado, but he tranfered to Toledo aftterwards. Things are looking up for him now, he'll be good.
Just watch the transfers from last year? Hart, Frost, Crawford blah blah Now we are in Hoke a blah blah and after the sping game peeps are Judgeing Drob? Hell if I was him I
'd have left when I seen my coach in shorts.
take into account the fact that the coaching change *prevented* at least one transfer, a certain Mr.Roh*. Given the apocalyptic ineptitude of the the previous defensive staff (scheme wise, coaching wise and personnel usage wise), I can't say I would have blamed him.
So if the change results in 6 transfers I am really counting it as 5.
* Second hand info, but quite believable in my books. But don't get your panties in a bunch if it doesn't meet your made up journalisitc standards.
if that dude couldn't crack LAST YEAR'S (ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!) starting defensive lineup, could he ever help us?
I know he was a young kid, but wow. There was a huge void and not only was he unable to fill it, he apparently was unable to even locate said void.
Obviously I wish it would have worked out, but at this point let's cut our losses. I'll take the extra scholarship.
True freshman...
Yeah, but so were Terrence Talbott and Courtney Avery, and they saw the field a lot more than Cullen did. And Greg Brown's not even really a freshman yet and he was getting reps before CC in the spring game.
Cullen Christian, for me, never did.
The defensive back transfer is just the suck that keeps on giving. Is he transfering because he isn't a starter? He's still a freshman in college. Who does he think he is, Charles Woodson? Doesn't he know it takes time to develop your skills to be a starter at corner.
Tom Brady sat on his ass for 3 years at Michigan before throwing a pass. If Cullen realized he is not very good and simply out of his league in the Big Ten, I'd understand transferring. But then that would lead me to question what RR even saw in the kid. Its shocking because he was rated high by the "experts" at Scout and Rivals.
RR probably saw the same thing that coaches at Ohio State, Pittsburgh, UCLA, Boston College and ten other schools who offered him saw.
From Boubacar Cissoko, to Turner, now Cullen, this is considerably crazy. I don't understand how so many highly rated secondary players can all fail this badly. We're having the success rate of the Chicago Bears attempts to find a Quarterback. Maybe Cornerback is the new Defensive End, in terms of difficulty in fielding game changers.
Gibson is his name.
April 21st, 2011 at 11:47 PM ^
And yet Gibson was hired pretty quickly by Pitt and one of his former players transfered from Michigan to Pitt...

double post fail
Those who stay will be Champions.
Champions of what, exactly?
The universe, duh. I thought that was obvious.
its part of Zoltan's domain
for last year's seniors?
DJ Williamson according to Scout. RS FR I guess buried on the depth chart and bummed about it. Understandable.
The D.J. Williamson transfer rumors are just weird. He was the #168 WR according to Scout and was unranked on Rivals. Besides Michigan, he reported no offers from any other school--not even schools like Indiana and Louisville, which I assume at least expressed interest in him since they show up in his Scout and Rivals profiles. If his transfer is motivated by a desire for playing time, it would appear that his only options would be DII and DIII schools. I guess if that's what he wants, so be it. But I just can't imagine giving up a free Michigan degree so that you can catch a few balls at Slippery Rock.
I agree with everything you wrote, but don't underestimate the power of an 18 year old to think he's a really big deal, whether or not there's actually anything backing that up. I'm not saying that's the reason here, but who knows. Maybe he thought that UM was right and everyone else was wrong and he was going to be a star and when it didn't happen right away he decided Michigan Football wasn't for him.
My point is, it's hard to rationalize what these kids are thinking. Maybe he just wants to go somewhere closer to home and run track.
I agree with both of you. Remember the movie Friday Night Lights? When your treated like a god in HS you start to believe you are. It's much better to be average in the best league than be the best in the worst league. So to speak. Watch out slippery rock here he comes!
Would be a good thing.
article - says he thinks that he is doing great. Maybe that perception is what is leading to his decision to leave. He thinks he is doing great, but the coaches don't think he deserves playing time.
Even without Rodriguez, people still go with the "HEY it's ONE MORE SCHOLLIE FOR US YAYAYAYZZZ"
Uh, yeah. When we start signing the Zeke Pike's and high four and five stars of the world with all these "extra scholarships"---THEN wake me up with that BS.
Right now? Not replacing the losses with anything better.
Look, I don't know if you've been paying attention to the guys we're high on (or who've already committed) but chances are that extra scholarship will go to a highly rated football player. As always, there's no guarantee that that extra player will be any good, but the chances that CC was going to be good were looking low as well. He wasn't getting it, and the coaches could see that. Did you see him getting much of a shot last year when the rest of our CBs were out? Did you hear the coaches even mentioning his name this spring depsite our supposed starters at CB sitting out rehabing those injuries? We literally had 4 healthy scholarship CBs for the spring, one of whom should be wrapping up HS, and the coaches put in Tony Anderson before CC.
Since we brought in 4 CBs in last years class, I think trading CC for a 2012 scholarship spot isn't a bad trade afterall. If our class doesn't fill up or we end up scraping the barrel at the end, you'll be right. But I don't think that's how it will happen.
Oh, some shitty ass player that won't ever play anyway wants to transfer, and thus, make room for all these guys ......... THANKS, guys!

(Zack Novak helped with the calculations.)
My number, ever since the player meetings seemed to stabilize things, has been four with a worst-case scenario of six. I see no reason to change it now.
As long as nobody who was going to help the team on the field this year leaves, it's all good.
