The Number 88 Jersey

I just saw that Brandon Moore tweeted that he is now #89, switching from #88.  "I am officially number 89 now...".

I didn't think much of it, but then I remembered the passing of Jim Mandich last night, another #88.  I wonder if these means there will be something special done to honor Mandich's number.  From other discussions I've seen on here, retirement of a number seems unlikely (unless it's 21, for obvious reasons or 2, again obvious). Perhaps a one year "temporary" retirement of the number?

This may just be a coincidence, but I was curious if anyone else has heard any speculation about this or if there is precedent for such a memorial.

Ah, that's a good point.

Ah, that's a good point.  That caused the problems with Avery and Odoms last year correct? They got a penalty for both being on the field at the same time if I remember correctly.

You forgot 98.

You forgot 11, 47, 48, 87 and old 98.

Edit: Nevermind. You're talking about future retired numbers.

I think we should wear helmet stickers with their jersey #s

They should be right above the bottom edge of the back of the helmet on either side of the outside stripes.

Maybe he wants to be just

Maybe he wants to be just like Tyler Ecker.

Which would be excellent for Nebraska.

I didn't think they were WAC officials.  I thought they were from the Sun Belt or Conference-USA or something.

I second this. Despite all

I second this. Despite all the hullabaloo around the final play, Im still angrier about the non call on the pass interference that actually HIT our receiver (Breaston?) in the chest on the 5, but he couldn't catch it because his arm was literally held behind his back. What an accurate throw!

TV guys

I remember Kirk Herbstreit, after yet another poor call, chuckling in disbelief and just saying "Sun Belt."

Maybe TE C. Barnett asked for

Maybe TE C. Barnett asked for it and Moore agreed to change?

(No idea what number Barnett was in H.S. - but if it was 88 maybe this is it.  Either way we'll find out in early August when freshman numbers come out)

I highly doubt that an

I highly doubt that an incoming Freshman, who most of the current players don't know, would go out of his way to request that another player give up his number considering he has yet to put on the winged helmet...just sayin

If he wore 88 in high school,

If he wore 88 in high school, and if Moore hosted Barnett on his visits (same position group so it's likely), and if they have remained friends I could easily see it.

No different than a pro rookie coming into the league and asking a veteran for a specific number - happens all the time.

Either way, it was just a guess (not the answer) as to why Moore may have changed numbers

I haven't heard of many pros

I haven't heard of many pros doing that for a rookie. At least not without some sort of compensation.

And I think it would probably be illegal for Brandon Moore to take $25,000 from Chris Barnett to get the #88.

Also, Chris Barnett was #14 in high school.
