Does anyone know a site where I can get a hold of the t-shirt that says:
Notre Dame Football: Returning to Glory Since 1989?
You know, when your own team hasn't had a winning season in two years, I'd be wary of wearing a returning to glory shirt.
I think a 2 year drought is a little different than a 20 year implosion. I still wear my bow down little brother shirt - losing doesn't mean that the shirt still doesn't piss the hell out of MSU fans.
The best part is the email they mass-mailed to a bunch of us current students (and maybe some alumni?) which boasted that UM hasnt beaten MSU in football or basketball in 2 years. Since we haven't been favored in basketball since the early 90's, I can only assume that little brother thinks a 2-game win-streak in football (one in overtime) against the two worst UM teams in the last 40 years is worthy of a chain email.
Maybe they just thought some Sparties needed help counting to two and wanted to help.
...but it wasn't one of the designs that made the jump to the new one he has set up.
I recall he also ran into some potential legal issues in saying "Notre Dame" and had to change it to "ND"
I dont see why it would be an issue using Notre Dame since they are the "University of Notre Dame". Unless Notre Dame de Paris the cathedral in France is the one wanting to sue. Its kind of like those unlicensed shirts that just say "Michigan" but dont say The University of Michigan.
Either way I'd like to see the shirt make a comeback!
...I recall Brian specifically writing that he had to change the shirt after getting an email from Irish lawyer types and deciding that the legal costs of fighting any challenge from them would significantly exceed the potential profits from the shirt.
Yeah that is weird notre dame means our lady, didn't know you could trademark our lady.
I dont think you should be asking about a notre dame shirt on a UM blog, especially since notre dame is one of our biggest rivals.
....someone missed the point of the shirt.....
Edit: I didn't neg you btw. I rarely ever neg because then I spend the rest of my day dragged down by my e-guilt. Sucks being half irish/half jewish.
I did neg you because there is nothing wrong with being half Irish.
I love how the kid's name is YoungWolverineFan. Hang in there, bud.
Haha I appreciate the neg, I should show more Irish pride. The guilt is a small price to pay for the raw amount of alcohol my body can naturally tolerate.
However, I did notice that you have no objections to my lamentation of my half jewish side. I hope that doesnt imply you're anti-semitic.
Nah, not anti-semitic. Just a proud Irishman.
"Returning to football glory since the Johnson administration."
Swings at MSU, apparently.
but the juiciness of the joke with ND comes from the book Return to Glory ... They teed the joke up. Can't blame the rest of the world for swinging away.
Might I recommend a We are Notre Dame t-shirt featuring a freek on bass with large glasses, a dash of Mike Golic, a sprinkling of shame and garnished with a healthy pinch of hilarity? I promise to let my daughter wear it to CCD the week it comes out. That is one parent/faculty meeting I'd look forward to!
for like a decade now.
May they continue to speak of their impending glory in the future tense for the foreseeable future.
I think ND should actually make it back under Kelly. He certainly has the best resume of any ND hire since the ill-fated George O'Leary's. And Kelly didn't lie on his resume.
The last twenty years, ND coaches have whined about a "recruiting disadvantage" caused by their "high academic standards." That begs one question: Why wasn't Lou Holtz affected by this? The same standards were in place for Holtz and those who preceded him as for the coaches who complained. I think ND didn't want to pay the money for an elite coach with a great track record, and has paid the price for the last twenty years.
This time, though, they got it right. Kelly is a great hire for them. Combined with their schedule, which is chronically top-heavy but really easy for a truly elite team after the two toughest games, ND is set up to be a perennial MNC contender as soon as Kelly gets his personnel straightened out and his system fully installed. That schedule may get a lot easier because USC will suffer from the scholly losses. ND is now set up so that they shouldn't lose more than one game a year starting in 2011 if Kelly is as good as he appears to be.
Thankfully, as a UM fan, I also feel that RR is a good enough coach to keep Michigan a step ahead of ND, even with a lot tougher schedule most years. Kelly might render the shirt moot, but he won't get the upper hand in the series with Michigan. He might help Michigan be a top five "most difficult schedule" team soon, though.
Kelly was a good hire, but it's pretty apparent that Cincy was overrated in both of their great seasons, given that they faceplanted in both of their bowl games. A perennial MNC contender is too much to expect - althought a perennial bowl loser seems pretty reasonable.
Not defending the excuses of Davie, Ty, and Chuck, but 1 major component that has changed since the days of Lou despite their NBC contract is that ND isn’t one of a select few on TV regionally and/or nationally anymore. I believe this to have been a huge recruiting tool in the days of Holtz.
Ontop of that I believe the implementation of scholarship levels was just starting when Lou was heading out, thus the playing field hadn’t exactly been leveled yet.
