MgoBlueprint- I am hoping you can do me a favor.   (I apolgoize for the open request; I don't know if it is possible to messsage you privately on Mgoblog.)   I am the injured alumni twirler from the homecoming game.  You mentioned in the other post that you have a video of the injury.  The injury was severe, and surgery was a few weeks ago.  It would greatly help me and my physical therapist to see the injury and exactly how it occured.  If you still have the viedo, please email me at  [email protected].   Thanks- Matthew

People eager to see Borges pack his bags might want to consider that his replacement could well be none other than one Mike DeBord (who happens to already be employed by Michigan at the moment).

Borges has had his bad outings but when he brings his A game, he's very good.  That's more than I can say for some of our past offensive coordinators.  I'm not sure DeBord, Terry Malone, Stan Parrish or Fred Jackson could have delivered a 600-yard, 41-point performance last Saturday.

Even if it weren't DeBord, hiring any OC is a gamble.  The few truly great ones are almost all looking for head coaching jobs, not another coordinator position.  Basically, if you want consistently awesome offenses, you need your head coach to be the driving force, either as a schematic guy (like RR) or a monster recruiter (which Hoke is showing signs of being, though the jury's still out).

I'm not disagreeing with the fact that Borges is an upgrade over DeBord, but if Borges only brings his A game 2-3 times a season, I don't think that is wortg crowing about.  A broken clock is still right twice a day, a blind squirrel can still find a nut, cliche, cliche, cliche.  Borges is coming back and I hope he proves me wrong, but I have a bad feeling we'll all be complaining about the same issues next year, only this time with fewer victories to show for it.

DeBord was prone to similar Lazurus like performances within an otherwise moribund offensive output.  For example, the 2008 Citrus Bowl, 2006 Notre Dame game, and 2006 Ohio game.  This is the same team that put up 18 in the 2006 Rose Bowl, was held to 17 in the 2006 Penn State game, and struggled through an injury plagued 2007.

Here's the thing man - what you've perceived as Borges bringing his "A game," I've perceived as happening only in situations where the opposing defense has chosen a more balanced, conventional defensive approach.  However, when opposing defenses have decided to sell out and load the box and blitz, my lovely avatar has yet to demonstrate even the slightest capacity to competently cope.

Borges' offense is increasingly reminding me of Mike Martz's Greatest Show on Turf which took the NFL by storm in 1999 leading the Rams to the title, but the next year D coordinators had a revelation: in order to succeed, Kurt Warner needed a requisite minimum time in the pocket for his receivers to reach the points on their elaborate vertical routes.  Pressure Warner early, and Martz's offense began to crumble.  Sound familiar?

Borges needs to use this off-season to solve the fact that his offense crumbles like a card castle in the face of defenses selling out and pressuring Gardner early.  Ohio is a perfect example.  Their spread simply disallows defenses from stacking more than 7 in the box, and if they do, Miller has quick answers.

Watching Ohio negotiate against Narduzzi's defense this weekend will serve as a further indictment of Al Borges and his inability to manage pressure defenses.

I believe Curt Mallory was angling for the Miami job, so that's too bad for him. He's done a pretty good job with the DB's though so I'm glad to have him.

There were a few stories that seemed to indicate that Kerry Coombs at Ohio State was, at least for a time, being considered for the positon. In any event, that will be an uphill climb in the beginning, I think, since it is coming on the heels of an 0-12 season which had followed two 4-8 seasons under Treadwell.

He is that type of coach (this is a compliment).  On paper, Martin has a pretty good CV to present to M O.  He was pretty aggressive and successful at GVSU and now has the recruiting, db, and OC roles at ND to present.  It fits.

So - we get to go against ND then ND's spinoff NuCo the next week in 2014.  Martin will take a lot of risks.  He was very well known for not punting (should please some here) alot at GVSU and making a go of it.  He did have a pretty good QB though to and I don't think he'll have the analog at M O for a while.

I believe this year was the first season Brian Kelly wasn't the primary play caller. It makes sense for Kelly to take over again with Golson coming back.

Chuck Martin was originally the DC for GVSU in the early 2000's.  When he became head coach at GV, he started to call the offensive plays.  He is a jack of all trades.

Martin did at GVSU, I think if our staff continues to struggle (the jury is still out) then we should consider him at U-M in a couple of years if he improves Miami O to respectability, his resume' would be even more impressive.

I certainly hope though, that we will never need him cause Hoke finally got things going consistently in AA.

Trust me when I say that Borges would be an upgrade.  Martin's play calling was woefully inept.  I guess it'll help now that Golson has been readmitted.  No big loss for ND on this one.
