Notre Dame - A New Player Departs

Submitted by BlueFordSoftTop on

Frosh linebacker Nile Sykes has quit Notre Dame.  He is seeking a "better fit" almost immediately after reporting to campus.  Notre Dame football has experienced a few deparatures recently.  No man fowl was expected to start.  Could this be a result of amplified intensity on the part of the coaching staff?  Curious:

Could be that a private, religious school isn't a super fun place to go to college (especially compared to B1G, SEC and Pac12 schools) and the kid didn't realize until he got there and thought, "Wait a minute..."

I've always suspected that Brian Kelly The Recruiter and Brian Kelly The Coach are two very different people. I think kids show up and realize he's not the same guy that was sweet talking them when they were simply recruiting targets -- purely speculation and guessing by me though.

This is video will never get old for me.  After he ignores the pleas that the guantlet is facing the wrong way, he sends his player through, potentially risking injury, certainly risking embarassment.  Upon finally recognizing that everyone else was right, and he was wrong, he proclaims, "You guys are freaking kidding me!"

Pure class:

He just kind of tosses the head wherever.  He wouldn't have been able to place it exactly where it needs to be.  Plus I don't think they built a stage with a trap door just for this little trick.

It definitely seems that Notre Dame has had much more than their fair share of players who leave the team shortly after arriving on campus or who never show up at all, and that has been more frequent since Brian Kelly has been there. I can't say why with any certainty, but my guess would be a lot of people fall in love with the beautiful campus, the football tradition and great facilities but when the recruiting pitches stop and it becomes all about hard work, South Bend, Indiana is kind of a boring place, it is a very conservative atmosphere and there is less of a party scene than at some of the other schools they were recruited by.

"It's holy water," Kelly insisted to the press.  "I am the complete trinity - touchdown jesus, the eggman and the walrus; now, watch me while I levitate."  Kelly was then seen to stand on his high chair, slip and fall down, rendering him unconscious.  "There is a god," exclaimed a player who wishes to remain anonymous.

If he did indeed transfer ultimately, then it should be noted perhaps that his other offers included the likes of Illinois, Indiana, Purdue, Iowa State, South Florida and CIncinnati. According to the Elkhart Truth, he visited Syracuse in December before deciding to go to Notre Dame, although that perhaps means nothing without first hearing the actual reason he is leaving the team and what his definition of a "better fit" might be. If nothing else, it is a curious thing to leave a team within weeks of arriving.
