Notre Dame goes TechFit October 6th
I just earned all kinds of weird looks from my co-workers. Thanks, I needed that laugh.
I so wanted to post these.
I don't understand a single part of this outfit. It is endgame of uniform reckoning. All my ND friends are exploding because of the extreme dumbness of this.
Wow, they've really gone overboard. Thrown tradition completely out the window.
Then again, winning was one of their traditions that they got rid of around 1989.
you really need the profile view for the full effect of just how... unconventional these uniforms are. I mean, if Michigan ever came out in anything resembling this, I might just turn the TV off..
That's at least 4 shades of blue; ugly sock stripes; overly-thick side stripe on pants with random white edging; numbers on the UNDERSHIRT and not on the shoulders of the jersey; and stupid leprechaun on one side and the resurrected gold foil look on the other.
EDIT: Apparently, the pants stripe is only on the left leg, to be consistent with the blue side of the helmet. The other side is stripeless. Blech.
It's even worse in the side view. I feel really bad for them.
DB is probably salivating at the thought of improving the Michigan Brand by something like this unfortunately.
It's ugly, but is it Notre Dame ugly? I think the folks designing this fell short of the ugliness needed to represent that program the last 10 or so years.
I feel too young to be saying this but get off my lawn and shit. Lord almighty
Actually, despite my post below, these jerseys might be perfect. After all:
I can't get embedding to work: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RP2mnkRGKH0
LOL I was expecting Yackety Sax
This video makes me so happy I went to Michigan.
The video at least confirms that it's still more or less ND old gold, albeit a very reflective old old that showed up pure bright yellow gold in the Facebook pics. It's still bad, but at least the colors seem to be more on point.
Poor ND... Their struggle for respectability is never-ending...
Our Techfit video was better. Our guy was angrier and screamier.
Why does Adidas feel like it has to systematically punish so many innocent fbs fans? Wisconsin, Nebraska, us, ND. Maybe they just hate the mid west?
Tech Fit, but that one is an absolute atrocity. I don't think the Domers are as pissed that they got Tech Fit as they are that it is the singular worst alternate uniform that I have ever seen. I actually will be a little bit surpised if they end of wearing that hideous thing in that game. That is a particularly bad one.
Nike, Adidas, Under Armour . . . it really doesn't matter which brand you have. No school is safe.
Adidas make uniforms wicked sweet dawg
Wow. haha, they take such a classic helmet and turn it into a monstrosity.
[Edit: Dammit. DGD beat me to it. My sentiment still stands though.]
Shouldnt their helmets be bright red to resemble Brian Kelly's screaming face?
I think the color you were looking for was purple
Umm... what the hell is that?
I want to laugh, but after those atrocities we wore last year against MSU...
This obviously confirms that it could have been so much worse...
Agree to disagree. I cannot think of a single uniform in modern sports worse than what we wore against MSU last year. Even the seizure inducing things that Maryland wore were better because at least the crazy design had some meaning.
I'd wear these ND uniforms 10 time out of 10 before i'd wear the bumblebee's again.
I would agree if you restricted it to the jersey, but these ND helmets put them over the top (or under the bottom). We at the very least kept our iconic helmet. ND has an iconic helmet, too but...
Great googly moogly.
...you are supposed to hold a hand over one eye, and that if you then stare at it long enough, it turns into something else as an optical illusion...
...adding "bumblebee" stripes to the shoulders of an away jersey is worse than changing the design of one of the most iconic football helmets in the history of the game?
Agree to disagree with you on that one.
The U-M uniform you speak of won't win any prizes, but I'd be surprised if this ND uniform even sees the light of day. Just as Sparty was able to mount a campaign to stop Nike from changing their logo, I have a feeling the amount of negative feedback these monstrosities will receive is going to be too overwhelming to ignore.
I think we're evaluating based on different things. I agree it is more egregious to change ND's helmet than it is to change UM's road jersey's. But, if these jersey's were being worn by Pitt this year, no one would be making a big deal because they're kinda dumb, but probably not, objectively, the ugliest uniforms in the world. On the other hand, if the bumblebee jersey's were worn by someone like Cal or WVU last year, I think everyone would still think they're absolutely hideous.
So in sum, yeah I agree, these are a bigger crime against tradition than the bumblebees, but i still think they are better looking. This is all just a matter of opinion though, and beauty is obviously in the eye of the beholder. Just my two cents on the issue.
But if say, Iowa had the bumblebees, would you really consider them the worst of all time? I ask because they once wore a vaguely similar uniform, but it's been largely forgotten:
Many schools have worn garish uniforms. (This was actually in the late 1990s.) We're sensitive to the 2011 MSU game look because it happened to be us in them.
I think they're pretty hideous too. If a team were to wear those in 2012, yeah I'd put them on a level of ugliness pretty darn close to the bumblebees.
Plus I think those are almost 20 years old, so I don't know if I'd classify them as a modern sports uniform anymore, but I guess others still may.
Edit* I didn't see your text under the picture at first, but I totally agree with that statement.
Our helmets got wings
Well... everyone knows that the holofoil stuff is always the rarest and most valuable.
So so bad. He even looks sad wearing it.
To be fair though, most people in ND uniforms look that way these days.
Plus, what's up with it not being centered and equal on each side? At least the side with the leprechaun, one is able to look at it without going completely blind.
These look like a combination of Navy and Northwesterns uniforms....
in college football, big nationally televised games are just excuses to wear silly costumes and, in Notre Dame's case, throw even more hilarious interceptions.
Guys........I'm scared now........They fucked with ND's gold helmet and chanegd half of it to blue.
If this happens, I'm gonna cry.
Deleware's helmet looks like our helmets, our helmets does not look like theirs.
Delaware is a much brighter blue than ours. Ugly!
don't feed the troll
...pretend I never saw that.
would like to see a very slight tweak to our helmets... Make the Blue Matte, with gloss Maize stripes! Now that would be very sweet! We got wings, and they'd pop if there were a Matte finish to the Blue!
You shouldn't be giving those assholes at Adidas any new ideas like this....
I understand your intentions, and I know you were just trying to illustrate the obsurdity, but you should be arrested for crapping on our "flag" like that.
Wow, GA Tech like unis with TCU like helmets (1/2 anyway). And to top it off, leprechaun gloves! This is too good to be true. Is this another one in the BHGP series?
Adidas got into college football at the end of the 90s. By 2003, the schools they sponsored all had one thing in common: Shocking collapses of form from their glory days.
These are some of the teams that endured the Adidas curse in the first decade of the 21st century:
There are others. When Michigan signed with Adidas, this is what I was afraid of... and it's exactly what happened.
Now, Adidas is trying to get "creative" with its uniform designs. This Notre Dame abomination is about the worst new uniform I have ever seen, given Notre Dame's "tradition."
It is a weird trend, but in fairness, a lot of those schools (like ND and Texas A&M) had started their decline before they signed with Adidas. Maybe their decline made them more affordable for Adidas to sign.
Conversely, Wisconsin has emerged as an annual Big Ten power under Adidas, so not everyone gets jinxed. (Is Northwestern really "cursed", also? If anything, they seem more consistent now than ever before.)
Pro Combat uniforms.
Arkansas. In fact I think Mallett blamed his draft day demise on the uniforms.
Arizona State wears Nike.
embrassing is the perfect way to summarize these costumes
Can't we just take a break from these alternate uniforms for a little bit. Please make it stop!
Dammit. Somebody post that video. Fast. Dammit.
Is there such a thing as "team-uniform malpractice"? Somebody called this debacle "scary." That was how I felt. This looks like a trip to the Casual Sportswear corner at TJ Maxx. On acid.
Is it just me or do other people pronounce the bass in Freakbass like the fish? It makes the whole thing even funnier to me.
I just assumed it was pronounced that way. I didn't even think of the other way until you mentioned it.
Oh my. Who designs this Adidas stuff?
the designers at Nike
Who comes up with these uniforms? I want that guys job.
... is a German guy named Dieter:
well, the jersey itself isn't bad. the pants are fairly bad and the helmet ruins any chance of this uni being decent.
If there was one thing Notre Dame had that was superior to most every other team in the country, it was their helmet.
Now that's gone, too. Seriously, what does Notre Dame have left?
NBC and those days maybe numbered.
The St. Louis Rams were so generous to offer up their practice unis for ND. Sloppy seconds is almost always a bad idea
Where are the three holes in the helmet to put your fingers? As comical as the game is likely to be between two has-been powers, this uniform will be even more hilarious.
I don't look at those uniforms and think "Notre Dame." I thought at first that was Georgia Tech, or Navy.
"Iowa Barnstormers" or "Denver Gold."
Notre Dame could have the coolest uniforms in the Arena Football League.
I swear I've seen some shit in my life, but sweet baby Jesus those are awful.
sweet Touchdown Jesus, they are awful.
Someone needs to stop the madness with these alternate uniforms already. Some look cool, I guess but it seems an overwhelming majority of them just look sad.
If you take the helmet away, they resemble Pitt's jerseys.
That shade of gold resembles the Dan Marino era Pitt helmet.
The not-even-half-and-half helmet with that godawful leprechaun... Just as "We are ND" outlclasses all other attempts at horrible hype videos, this dreadful costume somehow makes the new Nebraska and UW looks seem classy and unoffensive.
Somebody got paid to design that jersey.
I am really starting to feel sorry for the fan base. Nothing is going right for ND. The one thing they had...tradition...is even being taken away. I like Adidas...but hate those uni's!!
Want some good reading? Grab some popcorn:
Classic. Hard to pick a favorite comment, but this is in the top 5:
"If you are going to go out in public dressed like that you had better win, and win big. So big that no one would dare make fun of you.
It is the uniform sartorial equivalent of naming your son Sue.
But I am at the point of not caring."
I think they stole those socks out of my 10 yr old daughter's underwear drawer.
we are wearing almost those exact same socks vs Alabama this year.
I was just going to say, even after having put our Alabama jerseys out of mind, that I can almost guarantee we'll wear those same socks at least once this year. Nebraska and Wisconsin are also wearing them, I believe.
Well, on the plus side, maybe my daughter will be more interested in watching if they are wearing tween knee socks this year.
The socks are the ONLY great thing about that uni!
I tried to think of something more creative, but it was impossible to make those jerseys look even worse. So I did this instead.
I heard he actually wrote that on the wall so people would remember him after his ass gets canned.
And your i is backward.
...they didn't compromise tradition by putting names on the jerseys. So they've got that going for them.
but the first thing i thought was: if they can do this at notre dame, why cant they do something similiar here?
I had the same horrible thought... do we know that something similar isn't in the works for us?
I think (hope?) schools have veto power over this stuff.
Schools do, but the talk on the boards is that their AD is pushing these
If I asked all of you to put an honest bet on whether or not the Athletic Department-Dave Brandon-Adidas Axis of Evil would at least attempt to put this sort of garbage on the field within the next two years, how many of you would place your money on "yes", and how many on "no"? I feel like the Martin Niemöller quote (granted in far less serious terms) is applicable:
"First they came for Oregon,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't an Oregon fan,
Then they came for Maryland,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Maryland fan,
Then they came for away games,
and I didn't speak out because away games aren't as significant,
Then they came for Notre Dame,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Notre Dame fan,
Then they came for Michigan,
and there was no one left to speak out for tradition."
We have to come to an understanding that we, as Michigan fans, stand at the edge of a precipice. Between holding our traditions dear or relenting to the greedy, uncaring, covetous minds which, unfortunately, have been placed in positions of power.
Herm for President. Right freakin' now.
Heres Teo and Eifert with them on
I like them. For one game a year I don't mind this kinda stuff. More importantly the recruits and players seem to love them.
I probably wouldn't mind them either if they weren't, ya know, Notre Dame. I hate their guts, but dammit they've got a classy uniform. If there are only a couple somethings that still get the echoes to at least hit snooze once a year, that's probably one of them.
I like them. For one game a year I don't mind this kinda stuff. More importantly the recruits and players seem to love them.
We hear that all the time: "recruits seem to love them..."
Here's my question; if recruits like this, is there anything they wouldn't like? I've seen the tattoos on a lot of football players; I wouldn't let somebody wearing those tattoos decorate my bathroom, much less tamper with college football iconography.
I thought college football recruits were exquisitely senstive to social media trends. Don't they see these kinds of uniform concepts getting ripped to shreds on the 'net? People are laughing at this shit.
My counter to the "recruits and players like them" argument is that Alabama, who's nike pro-combat uniforms look identical to their normal ones, does just fine in the recruiting department. I find it hard to believe that the once or twice a year uniform abominations being worn are even a factor when it comes to recruiting.
"Recruits love them" is just an excuse. As I've stated many many times before, recruits don't give a shit about traditions, uniforms, uniformz, weather, girls, etc. They want to go somewhere that wins a lot.
That's why nobody remembers that Alabama won 46 games in the '00's before hiring Nick Saban, who went 6-6 his first year. Hell, they even lost to Louisiana Monroe that year. Saban started winning, and everybody forgot that while he had experienced some success in coaching, he was essentially a .500 coach at MSU, and an above-average coach at LSU
The past couple years must have been really, really good years for football jersey models. Seems like a recession proof job.
FWIW, I actually do not mind these. The "under jersey" with the players numbers on them is different and a cool idea.
As someone said above, the actual jersey and pants aren't too bad. Our clowniforms against MSU last year were worse. It's when you consider what they did to that iconic helmet that the real tragedy begins to take shape and you realize that we could have had it so much worse. Please no more crazy uniforms and don't ever touch the helmets.
Why does the headline mention Michigan?
They look like they used our colors?
You think they look like our colors? It looks like they have black (not dark blue) on their helmets, and that gold is more like Purdue's/Pitt's.
I think they look more like Pitt's and the photos of ND players moedling them look more like Purdue's. I'm just guessing, that at a glance, a non Michigan fan could look at the Adidas promotional picture and say "looks more like Michigan colors than Notre Dame."
It just keeps getting worse. When will we hit rock bottom? I am confident the most putrid college uniforms ever have yet to be seen. Maryland is just hell's atrium.
What the review for that album was...
I....just....no. God, I almost feel bad for ND now. I mean, tradition has literally been the only thing they've been able to hang their hats on for so long.
I am fairly certain that between these uniforms and this hand signal and those gloves, you can in fact summon "The Four Horsemen" and thereby begin "The Return To Glory". To be fair, the jersey and pants aren't the greatest (I don't like them personally), but they aren't Maryland, as others have said. I will ask, however, didn't UCLA use a similar style of number at some point?
Furthermore, why must they tinker with an iconic uniform? This is really one of the few things that ND had left before the slide into being Rice (per a thread yesterday). Those helmets really ruin it though...I think I bowled a 175 with that helmet once...
I love this thread for the sheer number of Michigan fans outraged on behalf of Notre Dame.
I think we're more outraged on behalf of college football than Notre Dame. Add that to the fact that we're all scared as hell that if this can happen to a football Institution like Notre Dame, it could happen to us.
I would ask "When does our Adidas contract end?" and "How much is our buyout clause" to escape further monstrosities (and head would asplode in anger if they tried to pull something like that on Michigan)....
But what other options do you have?
UnderArmour? (Hahahhahahahahah Maryland! And I live in the state! AHAHAHAHHAHA)
Nike? (Duck dress up! Pro-Combat herp derp derp)
...that moment everyone realizes we went to far...
someone should be fired over these
* the worst part is... they will still sell a ton of these*
I'm fairly certain that Hoke wouldn't allow someone to do that to our helmets. And no, adding a little number on the side is not as drastic as that vomit ND will be wearing.
Beautiful reasoning. Let's vilify Michigan fans for an imaginary reaction to something that never happened.
This scares the hell out of me. If they can touch ND's helmet, what stops them from going after UM's iconic lid. This is an all out assault on college football tradition. Last year was the year college football tradition died when they dressed Michigan up in its bumblebee uniforms. This is the year college football tradition is unceremoniously dragged from it's place of eternal rest, doused in jet fuel, and sadistically set ablaze while various fat-cat athletic apparel CEO's and school AD's with visions of profit and jersey sales in their eyes dance around the smoldering corpse in gleeful worship of the great beast they now serve. God help us all if we do not take a stand.
What can stop them? The school. We are under no obligation to allow Adidas to change whatever it wants. If our uniforms change, it's because we signed off on it.
That's just it. Who's we? Is it the fans? Hell no. It's the AD and the school. And unless I've got a spare million bucks that I just can't think of anything else to do with, I have absolutely no influence over them. If this happens to us, it's not because we signed off on it. It's because we didn't all take a stand together and stop it from happening. I honestly pray that the Notre Dame universe explodes with even half the force this blog has, because that's the only thing that will save them. The people have to get a petition going, or just flood the office with hate mail. It will be interesting to see if they can generate that kind of organized response. I hope they do, for all our sakes.
Nike is garbage compared to Adidas. I was really happy when we switched as I still am.
Give me Under Armour to bid on the next contract...nice job with NU and traditional approach with Temple, for example.
UA is huge with the kids.
Adidas basically paid for all the Athletic Renovations we're experiencing now, so this fall/winter when we attend B-Ball games and Hockey games, thank Adidas for opening up the wallet
Ugh, get rid of the Two Toned helmets, and the stripe off the pants and its a decent look. The blue side of the helmet really murders the entire uniform...
That helmet looks like it was designed by a retarded 3rd grader on LSD.
I mean, man, it's not even symmetrical. So much fail.
A retarded third-grader would have come up with a better design than that.
I resent that.
I actually don't mind the gold portion of the helmet.
I see what you did there.
more specifically, I should say I hate the marketing people who work for these shoe companies who's only job is to fuck with things that should not be fucked with in the name of being creative.
Look bad play bad
The uniforms themselves don't look terrible. They aren't good, but it could be a lot worse.
The helmets on the other hand? No. Just no.
...this never happens to us.
Look at the unit on that guy!
I would embed the skit, but I am not good with the interwebs. That skit was hilarious.
and setting new standards in doing so. Impossibly ugly, going way out of your way to be ugly helmet.
Was that Maryland taking attention away from themselves?
The helmet kinda looks like Ern McCraken's bowling ball...and that's still the best part of that monstrocity of a uniform! I expect 4 decommits for this uniform alone
Other than that, all alternates have failed. These are amazingly hilarious
As much as I hate Notre Dame, I respect the tradition and pagentry they represent, because we are the same in that respect. Whoever decided it was a good idea to mess with ND's helmets needs to be wrapped in a straight jacket, shot full of thorazine, and put in a padded cell. How could anyone ever think that was going to go over well?
It's only a short hop from defacing ND's helmets to defacing ours. You know concepts have been tossed around at Adidas for exactly that. I'm not usually one to borrow trouble, but this blog needs to organize a torch and pitchfork session the likes of which have never been seen before if Adidas goes there. I'm talkin' nuclear torches and Poseidon's trident pitchforks.
It's "you're"... a contraction of "you are".
Used in a sentence: You're an idiot.
I await the day when the Wings are shed, "just for a game", and all of you exclaim that you never saw it coming. We have seen the writing on the wall here people. Something needs to be done, not some sort of hippie, jersey-burning protest, but a significant punch to the gut of the AD pocketbook. Stop buying these damn abominations, such a frivolous waste of money to adorn yourself with such gaudy, shoddy memorabilia. I've had the same 1993 Rose Bowl hat since I got it as a Christmas gift.
And get off your lawn?
There is a fine balance between progress and evolution like last year 's UTL uniforms and taking the wings off the helmets. The recruits and players like the variants. Problem is ND missed the balance point by a mile.
adidas could have had much more fun with this:
Thats it. If they changed ND's helmet then I am convinced that Adidas will unveil a techfit Michigan jersey where the winged helmet is changed. No doubt in my mind
The streets will flow with the blood of the non believers. - Adidas
There's no giant ND with a crest number...
That was the line ND wouldn't cross....
Seriously, i keep looking at these expecting that someone will just eventually say, "Just kidding!" These are just terrible in all aspects.
I had heard somewhere that they put real gold flake in the helmet paint. Maybe since thier program is much like a late-career porn star (where they still have flashes of greatness but not anymore what they used to be and not as entertaining to watch) they dont have the fanbase or relevancy and therefore money to put gold paint on the whole helmet anymore.
I typed out and deleted 3 of them, I don't have the vocabulary to adequately describe how terrible those are.
...I'm offended. How can EMU not be the Hurons anymore, but this monstrosity is allowed to pass?
/s or not /s? You decide.
Who knew the State flag of Indiana was so ugly.
