Maybe this will cause Poggi to move up his timetable. Is this a case of one of those guys who could move up in the rankings?
Not so cryptic update from Tremendous re: Maurice Hurst Jr.?
Obviously Urban has cooled on Hurst.
Wrap him and Poggi up = Success.
It's nice to see an Ohio and Nebraska offer but its also impressive to see a Duke and Vanderbilt offer. I'll take brains and athleticism everyday.
Terelle Pryor got an offer from Duke (albeit more for basketball than football)
News,we need to land a couple of inside guys.GO BLUE!!!
Not that it matters, but he probably shouldn't have said another commit "said he would commit when he goes to campus". Maybe thats something the kid doesn't want let out, and maybe that recruit doesn't know everything. I don't like getting my hopes up, I've gotten blue balls too many times.
Dlineman who also plays RB? Eh.. No thanks.
NOT. This seems like the kinda guy Mattison and Hoke could turn into a monster.
He has nice acceleration through the line.
That burst will serve him well as a compliment to Pee Wee.
God da*n this kid is an athlete. Defensive version of Shallman; wtf does one do with such a quick big guy? Good problem to have...
His video is insane, I like him better than most of our Dline recruitees. I also have a feeling he will fly up the rankings throughout his senior year (..Pipkins). I really want him to join this class. Also a great kid from what I've seen.
Interesting, seems like a 3 tech. With Poggi being so too, do we really need both? Could Poggi be our 5 tech recruit in this class?
He seems like a NT to me. Short and stout, like a little tea pot. If Poggi comes along, I would project Hurst at NT and Poggi at 3-tech.
I thought Poggi is supposed to be pretty versatile and could play multiple DL positions, including the 5-tech.
Yeah, I agree with that, but that will be the case for most of the guys we bring in for those positions since they're so similar. However, if I had to pick one for Poggi, I think he's more likely to be playing the 3- than the 5-tech.
I can think of worse problems than having both Hurst and Poggi in this class.
He's a 3/4 star recruit FWIW.
Wait, so I am confused. Is he going to take a visit or not?
Hurst sounds like someone that could develop well on either side of the ball, wherever the coaches would decide to place him. I definitely could grow to appreciate someone who could not only aid in stopping the rushing game, but also be part of the rushing game when called upon.
I think Shallman has dibs on reprising Christian Okoye's/Mike Alstott's role as monster TB in our offense.
Think of him as a FB with Shallman as the RB, and behind our monstar OL. That is what I call....... MANBALL!
6'2'' and 285 lbs for someone recruited as a defensive tackle isn't bad at all, and Rivals lists his his 65 tackles and 11 sacks for 2011, so that definitely works for an NT, I would think. If we could get Henry Poggi perhaps, that would be a nice pairing up front, I think. I could see opposing O-lines having difficulty here...
Is it just me or does this seem like a massive troll move by aquaman in an attempt to manipulate recruits so that the one he likes more commits earlier?
Don't get me wrong, I think his recruiting updates are nice, but this just smells funny and wrong...
............what? Are you drinking again, PBP? It's not even during the season....
Not that there's anything wrong with drinking during the off-season; I just remember PBP during the live threads...
I'm not liveblogging, but yes, I am enjoying a beer or two to put me to sleep tonight...
I agree. This is where problems can arise, whether it is with a current commit or with Hurst himself.
Care to explain your reasoning? I'm not trying to flame, but your post was a little confusing
It seems like he is being a boss/employer of some sort and promotion comes along...
The first person he offers (and likes more) is thinking about the offer or talking it over with friends and family. The job, while better, may require a bit more time at the office and the offeree wants to weigh his options to ensure he makes the correct decision.
Meanwhile, the employer goes to a second candidate and says 'are you interested?' The second candidate is itching to jump on the offer, but the employer knows all along that he wants the first candidate.
Thus, the employer puts it out there that the second candidate is itching to jump at the offer, forcing the hand of the first candidate, whether or not they have weighed out their options thoroughly.
-just my 2 cents
Although I agree that it could seem like that, if he was doing an interview with Aquaman, and if he said that on record, then he had to expect it to go in the write up. Whether or not that was a good idea for Hurst to announce has yet to be seen.
Maybe I should put it behind a paywall instead.
What if the first employee has a similar job offer from a company that is just as good. I guess if he really wants to stay at the company he may be pressured to make a move, but I do not think this does much for leverage to get Poggi to commit.
they could be setting up their O-lines for a whole world of Hurst.
and here I was thinking he would... shift into high gear
6 players you cant say no to
He's number 6:
" 6) Maurice Hurst Jr.- I know we're loaded on the DL but he's a true NT with NFL pedigree (you don't turn those guys away). Oh and the kid is busting 70yd+ touchdown runs @ 300 lbs on his highlight tape...Nuff said"
I know its only a highlight tape, but it seems if he was 3 inches taller he would be a consensus 5 star
He's the right height for a NT
Only being 6'2" isn't the worst thing for a NT. We've all seen taller DTs who have had leverage problems *cough cough*
Clever, but hopefully BWC gets it together this year. With the best O-Line in the country being first on the dockett, we will immediately know if he will finally live up to the hype or if we should move on...
When BWC stays low and plays the position right (occupy the C/G and read the play) he's a true interior force.
When he loses his leverage, or plays outside the system (shoots gaps and allows interior lineman onto the LBs) is when we groan and wish Martin had another year of eligibility.
I'm hoping for big things out of Will this year....hopefully year #2 with Mattison and Hoke, things finally click for him.
If it makes you all feel better, Hurst told me himself that "it's definitely a possibility". I don't know if he's exactly hiding it per se.
thanks for the info Aquaman.
Do you think there's enough room for Poggi in the class if Hurst does commit in a couple weeks?
Could be Poggi at 3 tech, and Hurst at NT. And with the loss of Isaac, that could open up that room on the line. At this point, the only real need in the class is DL, every other position has been pretty well covered in this class and last years. Now it's just taking the best available.
I think the WR class won't be complete without a Treadwell-type gamebreaker, but yeah, the interior DLine seemed to be the one empty spot.
Really loving how Hoke & co. are focusing on the lines. The OL depth from the last two classes is amazing, and with Pipkins, assuming one of Wormely/Strobel moves interior to a 3, maybe Hurst and Poggi for this class....
Not Aquaman, but I would say yes there is. I predict the coaches take 3 more DL, preferably, but not necessarily, one each at 5-tech, 3-tech and NT.
Yeah, but we're at 18, and if we think we'll take 24, that means we could take a WR, a RB a DB and three DL.
I'd say we have 2-3 spots to give on the D line.
I get the feeling this will be receiving the banhammer rather quickly.
I have decided on the one on the left
I like the blonde on the right
And they just changed the titties!!!! Fuck that suck!!!! I should have never posted
And so ends the last source of nudity on the internet.
No shit but no I have to put effort to locate some. No much effort but still..,,
Yea that was the other who the decision was between....Tough one
They're kind of hypnotizing.
Let's see if any of the mods are still up.
Time for bed... better check one more time to make sure no one OKAY WHAT THE HELL, WHO PUT THE BOOBS ON THE BLOG?
This is why we can't have nice things.
You guys need to adopt a night owl type mod that is up all night. Probably not necessary though as the board usually dies around 2 or 3.
He's got a very young one at home, so he's probably up 10 or 12 times a night. When my first arrives, we may have more trouble finding daytime mods than evening mods.
That will be intersting. Both of you who are awake because of children battling with the drunken mafia. Should make for an interesting dynamic.
If baby's first word is "noob," the wife may kill me.
"See, son? This is what we call a Troll. You know what we do to Trolls? We send them to Bolivian. Yes we do... yes we do..."
Glad I got to see it in the few seconds it was up.
Needs to work on pad level a lot and initial punch. Don't think he has developed great leg strength to this point, but none of those complaints are irregular for high school players. Kid is a great athlete, and if he can develope those qualities at the college level he will be a great player. His weight and what I see as "can develope more leg strength" indicate that he will easily reach 300 lbs in college.
You may remember me from such players as...
Henry Hill. Walk-on. Consensus All-American. The quickest lineman, perhaps, in Michigan football history. "Unblockable," said Bo Schembechler.
Last time I saw him he was all coked out and paranoid. Rumor is he went into witness protection.
Unfortunately he forgot the 2 most important rules: Never rat on your friends, and always keep your mouth shut.
But for anybody who didn't get the joke (and for whom a cocaine arrest is not so funny)...
The quasi-fictional Henry Hill (who was based on another, real, Henry Hill):
Meanwhile OUR Henry Hill, from Detroit M.L. King, is one of the greatest figures ever in the storied history of Michigan football. Maurice Hurst Jr. could do no better than to aim to be another Henry Hill.
I apologize to anyone that hasn't seen one of the greatest movies ever made, and thought that I was literally talking about the former Michigan football player, Henry Hill.
I got it. No problem. It's really more a problem of younger fans not knowing a player from Bo's '69 and '70 teams, than them not knowing "Goodfellas."
For as many times as I've seen that movie, I didn't get it. I guess that names doesn't stick in my head for that character. It's not as memorable as, say, Don Corleone or Tony Montana.
Tape is ridiculous. He doesn't play against big time competition, correct?
It doesnt seem like he is too happy from his last tweet
EDIT...i misread his tweet
Care to share?
Says something like his dad said "It's not exactly Bama or LSU" and this pissed him off. Rightfully so. FYI for almost any of these kids you can just type their name followed by "twitter" and if they have an account it will generally come up as the first result. Sometimes the tweets can be a little tough to follow if you're not versed in the language.
It sounds like Maurice gets his intelligence from his mom.
His dad is dead on. This is not Bama or LSU. This is Michigan fergodsakes.
You know where else isn't Alabama or LSU?
and guess that is where Senior went to school? If so...well played Magnus. If I missed the mark, then just ignore my post.
Oh, nice. Now we have people who run Michigan football blogs talking shit about recruits' families. Yet another classy move, Magnus.
Considering that Papa played for the Patriots and Junior grew up thereabouts, and that there are a couple of kids who currently play for the Patriots (pretty well, I hear) who also played for Michigan (and even graduated?), I think Papa may be playing his son. With tweeting, it's all in the [missing] context.
Don't want to comment on a kid's family on the Michigan blog but... Well you all know what I'm thinking.
Seems to be a Michigan kind of guy already. I like it. I like it a lot.
And it's a damn good thing that Michigan isn't LSU or Alabama. It's one of the best schools, not just in the nation, but in the world. If you go here, and you do not get into the league, you can still get a first rate education. That being said though, having Hoke, Mattison and Montgomery being DLine coaches, you will have as good of a shot as anywhere to make it to the NFL.
We must be brothers, sounds like my dad. My first new car purchase on my own dime was a Jetta..."It's not an Audi". WTF Dad?
...the opponent D w/9 in the box, I could see him in the backfield (a la The Fridge.)
Michigan is as quality an offer there is. Hurst will look great in a winged helmet and I love the student athlete we would potentially get out of him. Him Poggi....Treadwell and Green would make this class complete. Mathis, Fuller would be awesome aswell. Cravens is already holding two fingers up singing "fight on". It will be interesting to see if we can really land Green...or will get left at the alter again. His speed is elite. Great compliment to big Wyatt and Smith! Is there another longshot mystery recruit out there? Surely with so much time left in the cycle there will be a recruit that gives a look that isn't considering us now. I would like to see us try and go after anzalone. Ship has likely sailed though.
If his plan is to get into the NFL, I would want to go to a school that has a lot of guys in the league. Alabama and LSU both trump Michigan in this regard, at least currently.
Well, who has the most DL guys in the league? LSU has eight. Alabama, five. Michigan, five.
So, right now, Alabama and LSU are better choices.
The equalizer? Michigan has 3 DL coaches. (Montgomery, Mattison, & Hoke.) At least on the DL, I would want to be under those guys.
That's a strange criterion. Why should a prospect be concerned about how many DL guys made it to the NFL from the Carr, Rodriguez, or Mike Shula (Bama) years? Those coaches are long gone, and it seems like the current coaching staff would have much more to do with a prospect's NFL prospects than some eternal feature of the university (weather or academics or something).
How did you conclude that Bama is a better choice by this argument than Michigan if they both have 5?
My post was expressed poorly. There are several reasons you might want to attend LSU or Alabama.
- At LSU & Alabama, you had a better opportunity of competing for the MNC over the last ten years. (3 times for LSU, twice for Alabama.)
- At both, you had a better chance of winning the MNC. (Alabama twice, LSU twice.)
- At both, you had a better chance of playing in a BCS bowl (LSU 4 times, Alabama 3 times.)
- At both, there are significantly more players in the NFL currently than there are from Michigan.
In Michigan's favor:
- They are a team on the rise.
- They have incredible history.
- They have 3 DL coaches, increasing your odds of getting good DL coaching.
- The academics are better.
I believe that every recruit says that academics are important. But not every recruit really believes it.
Odd that a 17 year old has better perspective on Michigan than his father.
I wouldn't take this kind of tweet too seriously. His dad might have been teasing him, he might have been exaggerating his dad's comments to tease his dad, or any combination of 1,000 other possibilities. By all accounts, Jr. seems to be a great kid. I suspect that his dad deserves some credit for that.
Everyone should take a step back from the keyboard before they criticize people they don't know for remarks made in contexts of which they're not aware. And stop being so damned sensitive and literal-minded.
Agree... tread lightly when publicly criticizing recruit's families. See The Anzalone Debacle for further information.
His dad is clearly wrong. Everyone knows the highest goal in college football is to win the Big Ten, and Michigan has a much better chance than either LSU or Bama to do that. It's a no-brainier
Doesnt this kid car greatly about academics? That could be the reason why he is so interested in Michigan. Which may explain offer like Vandy and Duke.
rankings are very similar for this kid. This kid is pretty darn good.....
247 - #19 DT, 4*
Scout - #23 DT, 4*
Rivals - #24 DT, 3*
Also, correct me if i am wrong, but i believe Rivals is now the most outdated as 247 has done 2 updates (although both minor), and scout 1 update since Rivals last updated. Rivals has also handed out the least amount of 4*'s at this point. Hurst has a high chance of being a low 4* across the board soon.
A #20 DT in the nation? Yes please!
#34 DT, 3* (77)
Would love this pick up
Holy smokes. The comments about his highlight tape being ridiculous are right on. That kid can move. He can be extremely quick off the ball, and has great agility and speed for someone his size. Regardless of his competition, He is quite an athlete and really gets after the ball carrier. Don't understand how anyone could rank him as a 3*.
Really hope he decides on Michigan. With some time in the weight room and better technique, this kid could be scary in a couple years.
yea I didn't understand how he was a 3 star either. The kid sure does have a motor on him. Would be a GREAT pickup.
Hurst seems like a very similar player to Elijah Qualls. Any experts want to weigh in on whom they would rather have? Qualls' offensive highlights are unbelievable for a kid his size. I say we grab both, put them both on offense. Convert some of our guard prospects to TE, and play Shallman as our primary back with Houma coming off the bench as our speed back.
That would be tough - I'd be happy with either one. However, I don't think we have a great shot with Qualls, considering he is a CA kid who just picked up a USC offer (in addition to offers from Washington, Cal and UCLA). He'll be tough to pull from the Best Coast.
I think he was a DB under Parcells (the before brady or belichick era).
I think he was OK--at least I don't remember Parcells being down on him like he was on that former Ohio DB (Terry Glenn), who Parcells used to call "she."
The kids has things you can't teach. Plus he says he's already up to 297. Get him, coach him up and watch him tear through OLs like chicken wings. Reminds me of a bigger Ingram(from South Carolina). Not doing the camp circuit his rankings won't jump but who cares, kid has talent.
