Not so cryptic update from Tremendous re: Maurice Hurst Jr.?

Submitted by Randy Marsh on

We all appreciate the updates from Aqua over at his Tremendous blog, and he has an update on 2013 DL Maurice Hurst Jr. The following part sticks out:

"Anyways. Why am I posting this update? I talked with Maurice for a split second tonight, who said he plans on visiting in a couple weeks. I also talked to a current commitment and they informed me that Maurice plans to commit to Michigan when he makes that visit."

Haven't heard of him before now but he has a decent offer sheet, including offers from tOhio and Nebraska. I trust that this staff knows what they're doing when it comes to D-lineman.

Not that it matters, but he probably shouldn't have said another commit "said he would commit when he goes to campus". Maybe thats something the kid doesn't want let out, and maybe that recruit doesn't know everything. I don't like getting my hopes up, I've gotten blue balls too many times.

His video is insane, I like him better than most of our Dline recruitees.  I also have a feeling he will fly up the rankings throughout his senior year (..Pipkins).  I really want him to join this class.  Also a great kid from what I've seen.

Interesting, seems like a 3 tech.  With Poggi being so too, do we really need both?  Could Poggi be our 5 tech recruit in this class?

Hurst sounds like someone that could develop well on either side of the ball, wherever the coaches would decide to place him. I definitely could grow to appreciate someone who could not only aid in stopping the rushing game, but also be part of the rushing game when called upon.

6'2'' and 285 lbs for someone recruited as a defensive tackle isn't bad at all, and Rivals lists his his 65 tackles and 11 sacks for 2011, so that definitely works for an NT, I would think. If we could get Henry Poggi perhaps, that would be a nice pairing up front, I think. I could see  opposing O-lines having difficulty here...

Is it just me or does this seem like a massive troll move by aquaman in an attempt to manipulate recruits so that the one he likes more commits earlier?

Don't get me wrong, I think his recruiting updates are nice, but this just smells funny and wrong...

It seems like he is being a boss/employer of some sort and promotion comes along...

The first person he offers (and likes more) is thinking about the offer or talking it over with friends and family. The job, while better, may require a bit more time at the office and the offeree wants to weigh his options to ensure he makes the correct decision.

Meanwhile, the employer goes to a second candidate and says 'are you interested?' The second candidate is itching to jump on the offer, but the employer knows all along that he wants the first candidate.

Thus, the employer puts it out there that the second candidate is itching to jump at the offer, forcing the hand of the first candidate, whether or not they have weighed out their options thoroughly.

-just my 2 cents

Although I agree that it could seem like that, if he was doing an interview with Aquaman, and if he said that on record, then he had to expect it to go in the write up.  Whether or not that was a good idea for Hurst to announce has yet to be seen.

What if the first employee has a similar job offer from a company that is just as good.  I guess if he really wants to stay at the company he may be pressured to make a move, but I do not think this does much for leverage to get Poggi to commit.

When BWC stays low and plays the position right (occupy the C/G and read the play) he's a true interior force.

When he loses his leverage, or plays outside the system (shoots gaps and allows interior lineman onto the LBs) is when we groan and wish Martin had another year of eligibility.

I'm hoping for big things out of Will this year....hopefully year #2 with Mattison and Hoke, things finally click for him.

Could be Poggi at 3 tech, and Hurst at NT.  And with the loss of Isaac, that could open up that room on the line.  At this point, the only real need in the class is DL, every other position has been pretty well covered in this class and last years.  Now it's just taking the best available.

I think the WR class won't be complete without a Treadwell-type gamebreaker, but yeah, the interior DLine seemed to be the one empty spot.

Really loving how Hoke & co. are focusing on the lines.  The OL depth from the last two classes is amazing, and with Pipkins, assuming one of Wormely/Strobel moves interior to a 3, maybe Hurst and Poggi for this class....
