"Not a penny will be given until this is resolved"

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Brian just tweeted this....interesting article from Scout.

According to the Daily, Kaplan’s effort is being funded by “a generous donor.”  The willingness of donors to voice their displeasure appears to be on the rise. As was mentioned on GoBlueWolverine two weeks ago, there are high ranking donors that have voiced their feelings to Schlissel during meetings over the last few months. Now comes word that some donors are planning to speak with their checkbooks.

“(Schlissel) has been told that not another penny will be given until this is resolved,” a source told GoBlueWolverine on the condition of anonymity.

+1000. This really was one of the most remarkable moment of the whole business. For two reasons:

1. This was in the course of him trying to describe how his feelings were hurt by people saying out loud that he should be fired. He was trying to say something like, "I've got feelings, you know."

2. Yes you are, Dave. That's the entire fucking point. Your tone deafness is truly breathtaking in its completeness.

The word "frankly" seems to perfectly convey his level of condescending arrogance to the media, to fans, to alumni, to students. And he said it twice in once sentence, to really hammer home the level of condescension in his words. Which is funny given that the whole damn point of these interviews was to make him look human. Nice try, Dave. Frankly, it didn't work.

Any day now! Once this domino falls, things are going to get really exciting around here. If we can't have wins on the field, give me endless speculation until Jan!

I would think it is Schlissel's call. Having worked in upper management at a public employer previously, the setup was the manager (President in this case) works for and reports to the Board, and all other management staff report to the manager. I highly doubt the regents are directly involved in staffing decisions beneath the President. Of course, they are free to direct Schlissel as they see fit.

The dam is about to burst!

Donors pocketbooks are the last thing Bradon had going for him.

Longtime season ticket holders' pocket books cracked first.

Then student ticket holders' pocket books splintered.

Now the big dogs' pocket books are fracturing.

Look out below!

As well in the article was how a rumored fourth AD candidate Greg Byrne from Arizona could be in the mix. We all know he hired RR at Arizona but also Mullen while at MSU. Interesting.......

Money talks so Hoke and Brandon are not long for our University but we have to get these next two hires right. Also, some of the people that support the status quo are right that this is Year 4 for both Hoke and Brandon and there may need to be a shift in expectations, although many would argue this has already taken place, but Hoke has performed so poorly that he managed to miss our new meager expectations with this year's performance. Say we get Harbaugh and Jeff Long or people like that which would be considered home runs by many people. If our dream coach Harbaugh were to go 9-3 the first four years are people happy? I realize this is a longer term question and one or those pesky hypotheticals but it is a possibility. I agree that right now in the short term we have to get these guys out for many valid reasons (incompetence, rudeness, tone deafness, stubbornness, and toxic environment) but it is a valid question as to what will be enough. I do think a lot of the sting can be taken out if all tickets are slashed by a certain percentage. That in and of itself would lower expectations. If people are asked to pay Alabama prices then they are going to expect an Alabama product. I'd say getting the price points right and aligning them to the team's performance more so than what non revenue sports' needs are would go a long way to bolstering patience which even a home run hire may require. Now, many have argued that Harbaugh would take us to the same heights as Beilein in basketball in three or four years and if that's true then prices may not need to be adjusted as much but I truly think that prices and the sense of the fan base being thought of as cash cows instead of valued partners and family is a driving force for the massive malcontent we're witnessing. Just some food for thought in the wee hours of the morning and again I agree that the first order of business is to get Hoke and Brandon off the bus.

Fair enough and this probably isn't the right time to have this conversation but I guess I'm trying to reach out to the faction of the fan base that still believes in the status quo. They have a point that we have extremely high expectations for football that could be a hindrance to building a program although thanks to Hoke and Brandon those expectations, at least for now, may have been lowered somewhat. My point is the school and fan base/alums need to meet halfway. We may not be able to think we should win the championship every year but the school shouldn't charge us as if we're coming off a national championship either. Basketball is going to be interesting. I think we'll make the Tourney but this year is probably going to look more like the early Beilein years than 2012 and 2013 though Beilein and, importantly, his staff are wizards so anything is possible. If we are a bubble team are people going to voice concerns? Personally, I think Beilein has earned the benefit of the doubt for at least 3-5 years but expectations for basketball are certainly not what they were a few short years ago.

Recruiting is something to keep in mind. Hoke has completely failed with some of the best classes in the country.  We have seen as many players regress as we've seen progress. I mentioned in a thread the other day that from that standpoint, this staff is uniquely awful. Maybe even unprecedented. Someone like Harbaugh would turn these past couple of recruiting classes into top ten teams.

Even so, I think your hypothetical 9-3 season does work for whoever is next, especially if wins against OSU and MSU are a regular occurrence again. Bo and Lloyd had plenty of three to four loss teams. Rivalry wins and bowl wins would do wonders. Haven't seen many of those in a looooong time.

Beilein has proven to be a magician on the hardwood and has definitely earned the benefit of the doubt.  As someone said in a previous thread, 4 of the 5 latest players to leave on NBA rosters would still have eligibility this season.  That would make for one nasty team.  Beilein has been putting guys to the next level, which should account for a percentage of his job performance (which pretty much everyone would agree has been above and beyond expectations).  To think we won a share of the season crown with Novak at the 4 and an able body at the 5 is above expectation.  A lot to be said of that team with senior leadership and teamwork but since then we have been more talented (although talent doesn't always win games).  Beilein has always had a mixture of both.  Last year we had lots of experience in the post with slightly less experience at the wings.  This year it's definitely reversed but the talent and upside of the young guys down low seems to be higher than what we had previously.  We might have less of a post presence on offense but a much more dynamic offense with guys that can stretch the floor from every position.  This could be a team unilke any other we've seen so far from a Beilein offense.  To think his offense was difficult to prepare for, now opponents have other wrinkles to worry about with every guy on the floor able to step out and pop a 3.  We may see the most struggle in our post defense.  While we are bigger and longer, Morgan was excellent with his ability to body up his man and play to even the odds of bigger, more talented opponents.  If we get that out of the newcomers we'll be all right.

All said I can't wait for it to be basketball season...and firing season...and hiring season...and then more basketball season.  IN THAT ORDER!  Ok, maybe firing season first.

Those are all totally valid and good points but honestly, the odds of Harbaugh coming in and not dominating a historically-bad Big Ten have to be so, so slim. And if we land him, it's presumably because he just can't stand the NFL environment, so it's assumed we would have him for the long haul. Pair him with Coach Beilein and a competent AD and we could truly usher in a golden era of UMich athletics.

Sadly, 9-3 sounds pretty damn good right now.  More seriously, with experienced players in place, the next coach might have a nice run right off the bat.  Hoke just did not get the desired results, but he put a lot of good pieces in place.  Next up should have early success.

It's kind of funny how many fan bases think their program should never go 9-3. I feel like for Michigan, given where the Big Ten now is, 9-3 should be something of a floor on a baseline. Maybe the occasional 8-4 in a rebuilding year, but certainly more 10-2 years than 8-4. Bad things happen in football. I'm much more concerned about a long term trend of mediocrity turning into a death spiral than I am the occasional bad year.

I am unclear how much more death spiral one gets than 5-11 over 16 games.

46-40 over 6 1/2 years.

1 bowl win in 6 years.

We're spiralling already, my man.

All that said, I agree - 9-3, even 8-4 is not the end of the world. We're watching the actual end of the world, football wise speaking, and it's been that way for 4 of the last 6 years.

Help us Obi-Jim, you're our only hope!!!

I'm just excited to know that at this time in a couple months we'll have a new AD and coach and we can begin our baseless speculation about how the team will do in 2015.

Can't wait.
