Not good news re: Trey DePriest

Submitted by Erik_in_Dayton on

Sam Webb said both today and yesterday that DePriest *may* move his commitment up to sometime before his senior season. This would be bad news for U of M, since DePriest has said that he wanted to see how they did on the field this year. OSU and Alabama are his leaders right now. It will be very important if Michigan can get him in for the spring game...Below is Webb's explanation yesterday (starts around the 5:20 mark):

I'm posting this b/c it's news and to maybe soften the blow if Michigan is cut from his list in the near future. I don't mean to be a doom-and-gloomer, and I leave you with the following:

Kent Brockman: Professor, without knowing precisely what the danger is, would you say it's time for our viewers to crack each other's heads open and feast on the goo inside?

Professor: Yes I would, Kent.

...or convince him to change his commitment. He said he likes Michigan, he wore an M shirt to an OSU camp. It's not like he's going to commit to a school and then live under a cave until February. If he likes M, even a little, he'll be following us during the season, and it's not like Michigan doesn't get noticed when we're doing well. If we have a good season, he'll consider us and he'll hear from RR. If we have a poor season, it won't matter whether he's committed already or not.

The way I see it, if we have a good season, we're still in it with DePriest, if we don't, we won't be. What he does recruitment-wise before then is almost irrelevant.

Not to sound like a dick, but do you have any reason at all to think that about DePriest? What about him makes him more likely than any other recruit who commits early?

Also, this wouldn't be a Snake Oil situation, at least the way the term has been used before. When we talked about Snake Oil, it was for a kid we were never really in on, like Roundtree, or Barnum, or Demar, something like that. DePriest is a kid who grew up a Michigan fan, and has always said we are one of the schools recruiting him the hardest.

DePriest has been on the recruiting radar for a while now. It seems like he has put a lot of time into evaluating just a few schools. Given that his recruitment has already spanned a couple of years, a commitment would probably cause him to entirely stop entertaining other schools. This is why I believe our best chance is to convince him to push back his commitment.

If he were to make a firm commitment to Ohio State, I believe we would stop recruiting him out of respect. If he were to commit to Alabama, he would prepare himself to resist future motions from Ohio State and Michigan.

I've always thought the term "Snake Oil" applied to any player we were able to pull away from a firm commitment to another school. People seem to use it in a variety of situations now, and given that you understood what I was trying to say, I'd say it conveyed the intended message.

Since I am new to this blog and can't start a tread on the MGoBoard, I figured I could put my post here. I just read a article saying that Demetrius Hart just updated his top three schools and Michigan replaced Florida. His top three now is Auburn, Alabama, and Michigan. This is great news! Hopefully his visit to Michigan for the spring game will strengthen our chances of landing this guy.

Here's the link to the article:

This is going to be a recruiting year that is small in numbers anyway; losing one recruit, even a highly-regarded one, won't be too bad because of the limited amount of "slots" available this year. I would imagine that RR's biggest problem this year will be who he has to tell "no" as opposed to who tells him "no."

im not sure why DePriest gets so much attention from us.

of course he looks to be a great player, but a guy who is a supposed Michigan fan having OSU above us on his leader board? count me in as thinking he never truly liked Michigan as much as we all thought.

im a Michigan fan and OSU has been dead to me since the moment of my conception.
