Wounded Warrior jerseys....Courage and Duty to replace names on the back.
I sort of like them. For Northwestern, not Michigan.
Every time I see your picture I silently laugh to myself. "We don't have any change!"
except it was more like:
I love Beaker.
Ah, some good old-fashioned flag desecration uniforms.
The American Outlaws are looking at this and thinking "Why haven't we progressed to blood-spattered flags yet?"
Like the helmet
don't get that.
I dont' care. Just win.
This is made up, right? Like from an SBNation commenter?
My thoughts exactly.
These can't be real... right?
I mean, is it patriotic to say something when someone is doing something with the stars and stripes, and it looks FUGLY?
At least when NFL/CFB teams wear the pink for breast cancer, BOTH teams are doing it. Just seems a little arrogant to suggest that the Northwestern Wildcats are somehow more representative of "Merican" values than the Michigan Wolverines.
So, insulting AND fugly!
Edit: Didn't know this was going for Wounded Warriors charity. Still, there should be some tasteful reference to our nation's armed forces on BOTH teams' uniforms, like US flag sticker on back of helmet or stars and stripes on gloves. Would be a little more tasteful, as well as respectful in that it would illustrate the NATIONAL nature of these soldiers' sacrifices.
I think they are awesome, but I guess I'm not really sure why Northwestern, or any specific university other than one of the service academies would do this?
The cigarette makes that pic.
It doesn't matter what they wear. They will inflict pain upon us. Is everyone prepared for Michigan to become a "basketball school"?
You do realize Northwestern is 0-5 in the almighty B1G, right? Not saying we'll win, but it's not like we're playing Oregon and their funky unis.
is better than you think. I really expect us to go 9-3 and then watch State either beat Ohio or play them very close. I don't think it is hyperbole anymore to say that they have the best defense in the country. That game had very little to do with whether we beat Northwestern.
Sparty will of course choke against Ohio and in whatever bowl game they end up in. Which is pretty much why I despise Sparty. They won their season on Saturday and now it's back to pumpkin time.
If MSU didn't lose again, you would still discredit their season somehow. Fact is, the last 2 times MSU has beaten UM, they've produced two 11 win seasons, a B1G title, a division title/BCG berth, and the B1G's only significant win over an SEC team in, what, 10 years?
The win prior to those, MSU had a losing record coming into the game due to an elongated QB battle, and used the UM win as a base for a bowl berth.
The win prior to that, MSU played @PSU the final game of the season for a share of the B1G championship.
The "UM is MSU's Super Bowl" meme is tired and invalid. Wise up and pay attention.
No. I'm the variety of Michigan fan that saves all their hate for OSU. I root for MSU when they're not playing us. I'll stop being annoyed when they win a bowl game or beat a top-ranked team. I'm fine with them being better for a year - it happens - but they always seem to choke down the road. And if you don't think they consider UM-MSU their most important game of the year, you are mistaken.
Brian, please please please create a module that allows you to flag a group or posters and restrict their posting as a group. Then lump all these people who are doing nothing but whining into a "do not post for 7 days after a loss" group and be done with it. It'd be nice to have intelligent discussion about things between the people who have perspective.
You are either a dedicated troll, or a complete marshmallow
So is anything going to actual wounded warriors, or is this just for the sake of look-at-me?
100% of the proceeds go to Wounded Warriors
I really hate how intertwined football is with nationalist causes.
Well then why don't you go live in the Soviet Union with Osama bin Laden?!
Yeah! Stick to jai alai you sunuvabitch! These colors don't RUN!
how football is intertwined with institutions of higher learning.
I didn't come here to play school
Those look pretty awesome. I'm digging the blood splatter.
Just as in the future all restaurants are Taco Bell, on November 16, all Northwestern players are J Leman
That would be a totally sweet future.
on their uniforms again and leaves it at that.. In fact, I wish they'd leave that as a permanent feature on the uniforms.
Just bust out the all-maize unis. You know you want to.
Thanks for your service and I appreciate all you're doing for America.
That being said, I'm tired of the military and over-the-top patriotism being conflated with sports. A uniform stands for the school it represents. Northwestern is not Army, Navy, the Air Force, etc. It's a private school on the banks of Lake Michigan. The WWP is great. It really is. But there are other ways of providing advocacy and raising money for the WWP than to roll out some really incredibly ugly, gaudy uniforms that in no way even remotely attempt to use Northwestern's actual school colors. Donate a portion of the ticket sales. Set up a booth at the game. Have Coach Fitz and maybe Hoke do a PSA that airs during the broadcast. Wear a flag patch. But turning your uniform into a cheesy textile 4th of July parade, even if they're being auctioned off, is too much.
To each their own, but these patriotic uniforms and camo elements are just about as grating as Pinktober for breast cancer awareness, etc. Let sports be sports, let uniforms be uniforms, and let charity be charity.
Thank you, I agree with you. Sometimes it just feels like exploitation. It's kind of how I felt with the whole "Boston Strong" thing and then when I saw they placed the World Series trophy at that spot. I'm sorry but they didnt win because of that tragedy, they won because of their team. Sorry I digress but I again I agree. Save the WWP for Army, Navy, Air Force.
I don't mind the parade, but I'm officially over the whole "strong" nonsense. People now take any cause and say that they will be "this-strong" or "that-strong." Boston strong doesn't bother me, because I guess it wasn't as played out. Anything else is completely annoying to me now.
They'd probably raise more money if they simply asked for donations at the stadium with significant in-stadium promotion with a matching donation from the school/Under Armour. Instead they'll inflict this faux-patriotic gear on the viewing public for the ultimate benefit of Under Armour. As an aside, I find the "bleeding" aspect of the red extremely tacky, especially considering the chosen charity.
These aren't as bad as the 'pink-washing' that the NFL does, which I know (partly) comes from a good place, but is also a transparent attempt by them to market to women.
I really hope I see, during this game, to see clips showing NU (and UM, for that matter) visiting actual wounded warriors at Dingell VA or some similar place. I know UM already does great work with Mott (and I'm sure NU has a similar program), so I don't know if they have time.
I bet your peas don't touch your potatoes.
...can we please do away with the singing of God Bless America during the 7th inning of playoff games already?
So if we beat Northwestern, do we hate America? Why do you hate America, Brady Hoke?
Well, my friend. By your measure, it's not yet a given that Hoke hates America...
It's like the lovechild of Marylands uniforms and the star spangled banner
... so yeah.
Normally random jersey changes I do not like at all. These are awesome. As a member of the military, and as one going to Afghanistan after Christmas, I appreciate it, love it, and hope it brings a lot of awareness to the WWP and the like.
Is that supposed to be splattered blood???
because that's kind of messed up....
I think they need to add some entrails to really set off the blood spatter motiff.
Printed on the QB towels that flap from their waistband.
Now we're getting somewhere.
I like the uniforms, but that's beside the point. I really hope WW is getting something out of this. I agree with some of the points already mentioned. Why northwestern as opposed to a service academy? (I understand this is obviously a UA design) The uniforms just scream to any neutral party 'support us, because we are more patriotic'. Hope the proceeds of all this getup go to something that actually helps the veterans that protect our freedoms and sacrifice so much doing so.
So it's important to note that they will be auctioning the jerseys after the game to actually raise money for the foundation, so that's nice.
I hope that all of under-armor's teams are doing this because there is nothing about this uni that is at all specific to northwestern, other than it is a university that is within the boundaries of the united states of america.
That's 'Merica, to you.
Isn't it obvious? We're NORTH America's biggest WESTERN power.
Pfft, they aren't even a public school!
These colors don't run. But for the sake of cool football jerseys and some guy using a paint splatter effect in design software they do.
Maybe I'm alone in this... But I think those are pretty awesome. Not for Michigan, obviously, but the design is pretty badass. 'Murica FTW
Red white and purple 'Merica ?
Man, they gave up on their season so much they decided not to wear the school colors anymore. I can respect that I guess.
I think this is a pretty stupid way to do it.
Why not break out the Mott alternate unis featuring cancer-ridden children and call this the "Pity Bowl"? /s
Frankly, after the PSU and State games, we should be wearing those uniforms, because THOSE COLORS DON'T RUN.
Since these unis look like a Captain America shield exploded on them, we should match them. I'm thinking, continuing the Marvel theme, we should focus on our blood brother from up north--Wolverine.
He's Canadian, so we'll have to change our color scheme to red & white, but as shown by these Northwestern unis, you don't have to maintain your color scheme, so we're good. We can put on the helmet a Maple Leaf with a picture of Hugh Jackman smokin' a stogie superimposed. The jerseys can look pre-ripped, a la Wolverine's claws, to help match the NU uni's tasteful blood splatter.
Let's do it Brandon.
I don't usually comment on this, but it's in very poor taste to wear the flag as clothing. It's similar in nature to flying another flag above it or letting it touch the ground - you're just not supposed to do it. If you want to honor the flag/troops, this is basically the opposite of what you should do.
No, see, it's cool because they covered it in fake blood splatter. To honor the Veterans.
I don't get this. Simple as that. Also, the running red is very inappropriate and tacky. I can't believe that this design made it through the creative process. How many eyeballs saw this thing?
Sugar. Water. Purple.
They look great. It has nothing to do with self promotion, it has more to do with supporting our vets. Why didn't Hollis think of this?
They look like they have blood splattered all over them. All around I'd say they're terrible.
I love the new uniforms. Looks awesome and would look great on TV.
They look good. But couldn't they have created these for the Army-Navy game or something along those lines?
I just don't see why Northwestern is sporting them.
Any reason for what looks like blood splatter? I find that really disrespectful.
I am stunned. Are those blood spatters?
There are other tributes going on this month as well, according to a few stories - Texas Tech will supposedly have a similar (but less overtly patriotic) uniform to benefit the Lone Survivor Foundation and Minnesota will have the "M" on the helmet decked out in the flag for their game against Penn State.
I read this entire thread, waiting for someone to reveal this was a prank from Black Heart Gold Pants or something... I'm still waiting. Those are hideous. Just wear your purple jerseys and make the purple have a subtle camo to them or something. This looks like something the NFL would make the Pro-Bowlers wear.
They will have national attention with the blood splatter in their. It won't be good. I'm sure many people will think it's very offensive.
This veteran thinks it's offensive.
This is Northwestern's uniform vs Michigan State. The proceeds will go to the homeless advocacy project.
Speaking as a OEF vet, it's cool when teams try show support for the troops, but they can scale it back a bit. It gets a bit played out when every week some school is rocking camo or something like this. They need to pick a weekend were all schools, if they do one, rock some patriotic uniform. Not saying it isn't appreciated, just maybe scale it back a touch.
it seems that they are less interested in "supporting the troops" and more interested in drawing attention to Under Armour's graphic design department.
maybe I'm just cranky after that shitshow saturday afternoon but these are the fugliest most hideously awful pieces of shit ever. Worse than Clowniformz, MSU's attempt at being USF, worse than anything Maryland has ever worn. Even worse than those Gordon's fisherman NY Islander uniforms from the 90s.
...We're taught from a young age not to desecrate the flag, so we'll be afraid to hit 'em and knock 'em down.
That blood splatter is unbelievable. I can't believe somebody thought that was a good idea.
...they are not good at all. This will be an interesting road game but one Hoke might want to win for future job security. We are poorly coached and underwhelming, especially on the road. We have to turn the corner at some point....might as well be this game. Win here...win at Iowa and play the game of our lives against Ohio.
I normally don't make a big deal out of this, but I find these uniforms to be disrespectful. For proper flag etiquette, see: http://www.usflag.org/flagetiquette.html
•The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, fireman, policeman and members of patriotic organizations.
Of course, I'm really, really, old.
I agree that they're disrespectful, but I was thinking more about the blood spattered on the flag. This is to honor wounded warriors?
They might be the dopest uniforms ever.
I like em. If they bring more awareness... they have done thier job.
18 year active duty Army trooper here, 2 years left!
Their "job" is to MAKE MONEY for Under Armour, who is keeping 90% of the profits.
Yes I know they are giving 100% of the auction price of the unifforms to WW, but 90% of the merchandise sales from the uniforms are going straight into the pockets of UA, and THAT is why this is being done. Well, that am I'm pretty sure UA subscribes to the "no publicity is bad publicity" school of marketing.
That is all.
Disgusting and offensive.
If Bo were still with us, he'd have Michigan ready to put NW through the turf for wearing this travesty.
Did they actually put blood splatter on there? Holy shit.
