No.9 Hamburgers and my visit to Ann Arbor today

Submitted by umhero on

I want to give a plug to a fellow MgoBlogger, the proprietor of No. 9 Hamburgers on Hoover at Division.

My brother suprised me this morning with a last minute offer to attend the game today.  Since it was too late to find a tailgate to join, I suggested that we try a burger from No. 9.  He's not a member of this site and had never heard of the stand.  I was only aware of it from here and I'd never eaten one.  We parked across from Pioneer on Stadium, so we had to walk around the Big House to get to the burger stand.  My brother was annoyed and complained that we should just head in to our seats.  We arrived at our destination and about ten people were in line and more arriving every couple of minutes.  It's a pretty nondescript tent with a meat filled grill and a couple of employees.  What was interesting is while No. 9 had a line, two other nearby food vendors had no customers at all.  It became clear that the line had several regulars, because they were raving about how good the burger was.  The prices were great, $3 for a single, $6 for a double, $3 for a jumbo brat, and $1 for a pop.  We each got a double with grilled onions, cheese, and a pickle.  We both agreed the first bite was awesome.  We enjoyed our burgers as we walked to stadium.  My brother agreed the meal was worth the walk.  So if you're ever going to a game and looking for a bite before, give No. 9 a try, you won't be disappointed.

BTW - It turns out our seats were in the front row, Iowa side, at the 30 yard line, and the guy sitting next to me is a daily MgoBlog reader.  So since my brother could only name about three current players, I spent much of the game talking about how bright the future is with the stranger to my left.  Despite the disappointing outcome to the game, it was a great day.

My wife and I have learned that the only product guaranteed to be properly prepared on game day is the No. 9 burger.  The chef never misses an assignment, the meat is never injured, and turnovers (?flipovers) only occur when appropriate.

I need to make No 9 part of my game day experience.  My regular spot is southwest of the high school.  I've been too stuck in my pre-game pattern, and honestly too Boren to walk around to No. 9.  That will change in November.

The No. 9 Burgers are top notch, nothing else compares in terms of food available on the walk to the stadium, and they're amongst the best burgers I've had anywhere.

Expert Tip: Get their early.  As was said, there will be a line and it can turn not-so-family-friendly-atmosphere as kickoff nears and the lubricated tailgaters crash the line to get their food before kick off.
