No Way Coach Rod gets fired this year

There's no need for it. Brandon is committed to doing an evaluation after the bowl game. It is already too late to fire Rodriguez. There is no harm done in letting him coach another year - especially on the money side of things. If Harbaugh wants to go pro, well then, he can make that decision. We don't want him if he is just going to do that in a few years anyway, and on the other hand if he really, really wants to come to Ann Arbor well, eff it, let him show us that. Especially the case after the way he jammed up the program a few years back.

Brian, you may have heard things from reputable sources, but I do not hear you saying that someone has told you anything with certainty.

So based on the rumors, but then looking at the time, and the bottom line, and then considering that there is absolutely no evidence that Harbaugh even WANTS to come here, I'll stick with my guns. It would be a bad decision to dump Coach Rod and go off into the unknown, especially with the price being what it is.

Additionally, I have heard it said that Brandon will not fire Coach Rod unless he has some assurance that Harbaugh wants the job. To those who say this, I ask where the f*** is your information coming from on this one? And also I will say - if Brandon is the kind of slimeball that would say on one hand that he will wait in order to evaluate, all then while putting out feelers to Harbaugh, and then conditioning what he does based on what Harbaugh says, then we all must step back and reconsider the propriety of the Athletic Director. I consider him to be a stand-up guy - but maybe I should reconsider, based on the infinite wisdom of the speculators in our midst.

I usually hate the whole "you don't need to post this" censorship on these board.  If you don't like it, don't read it.  But this post was just entirely unnecessary.  There are a bazillion (I counted - there are actually 1 bazillion posts) on this topic.  All the OP did was post his speculation.  A perfect comment to one of the already existing posts, but not something to start a new thread on.

Also, to the merits of the original post:  Do you really believe that the timing means that DB will 100% not fire RR?  If this were the case, why would DB not come out now and endorse RR and put this all to rest?  Surely, DB knows as much as you about how his time table will affect things.

If that was sarcasm, then it was damn good sarcasm and I apologize for missing it.

If not:

Are you kidding - ONLY the defense?  Last time I checked, defense was 1/3 of the game.  And special teams another 1/3.  So the only thing holding this team back is that we are downright terrible - like one of the worst in D1 football - at 2/3 of the game?  Good thing that that's all it is - I was afraid it was something substantial.

Oh, and as for the other 1/3 of the game - offense - we scored 7 freeking points against OSU.  If we have such a great offense, one would figure that we would score more.  Ditto Wisco - we only put up points when the game was out of reach.  Ditto MSU.  Ditto PSU.  Just about every decent defense that we have faced has scouted our offense and discovered ways to stop it.

So we are TERRIBLE at 2/3 of the game (D and ST), and as for the other 1/3, we are good against crappy defenses and terrible against decent competition.

Unless DB makes a statement saying RR will be our coach by the end of the week ( I hope he will).  I don't think he's going to make a judgment on rather RR will be HC based on a bowl game where a big 12 team OU, OSU or NE will be a much superior opponent!

My thoughts are that RR was told after the IA game that he would be released after the January bowl games.  Strange as it seems, I think RR may have agreed and may want to move on.  The announcement delay may be due to bowl games being played. Harbaugh wants to coach his Stanford team in a BCS bowl game and Steward would like to coach one more bowl game before his retirement. Thus, the hush through bowl season, and UM will reduce it buy out payment.

Otherwise, why would you damage RR recruiting with speculations he may be fired after the bowl game????

I think some people are missing the timeline factors here.

That guy that everyone thinks is going to be the next coach (I won't even say his name) is in all likelihood not going to publicly consider any job until he's done coaching his team in a post-New Years bowl game. Coincidentally, RR's buyout goes down on Jan 1. Also, any firing would have to be done with money in place to pay the old man and pay the new guy coming in, lining that up takes time.

Thus, even if he's leaning towards firing RR, there's no way DB can do anything until after the new year, unless he wants to seriously destabilize the program with a lame-duck session and run the risk of not getting that guy everyone thinks is going to be the next coach - i.e. 2007 redux.

The story is not over until the bowl games are done, but there won't be any public activity in December. It's going to be a long month.

This isn't a kidnapping where someone is trying to get ransom money together. It wouldn't take the University of Michigan 10 seconds to find the money to pay off RR's contract and enter into a new one if that was what it wanted to do. There are plenty of athletic boosters who would help with that even if the University didn't want to write the check.

we don't turn into Notre Dame 2.0

Playing merry-go-round with the coaches is probably the most effective way of destroying a program.

Look at what it did to our defense. We haven't had a good defense since the days of Shawn Crable and co

It is such a negative thing -

1) Spooks the really good recruits

2) All players have to learn new play calls and schemes

3) Player compatibility with scheme related attrition/ lack of talent (Sheridan/ Threet)

Really - give RR and GERG another 2 years. If they don't deliver fire them.  But firing them now puts the program back 3 years at the onset itself.

I just hope we don't turn into Purdue or Northwestern under Tiller and Walker.  Good offensive teams that put points on the board but are never really challenging for Big Ten titles because they couldn't consistently beat the big boys.

Purdue sucks anyway, but NW beat teams with a lot more talent than them using RR's offense.  Neither team wins the BT very often because they can't attract enough talent.  NW's administration and mission don't really take football seriously enough for them to compete with the big boys on a regular basis, and Purdue is a cesspool that no player with self-respect and serious offers from elite schools would even consider.

RR's offense is a positive, and as soon as they have more upperclassmen on both sides of the ball, Michigan will be back in it.  I see Michigan as a "surprise" 11-1 team next year, but I am always more optimistic than most.

How about this for a scenario:  11-0 Michigan loses to OSU again next year, something in the team mentality "snaps," and they wallop OSU the following week in the BT Championship game to procure a berth in the MNC game.

I am typically very optimistic as well and would absolutely love to have the above scenerio occur.  I am having trouble projecting this team becoming what you describe.

1) The offense must take another large step forward in 2011.  Yes it piled up yards, but it was unable to put points on the board against Iowa, MSU, OSU, PSU and Wisc.  How many more steps forward can we expect it to take?  Denard will have more experience but defenses will be more prepared to stop him.  We will probably rely on a freshman running back to carry the load.  The offense is going to have to carry the team again and I don't think it is going to be able to.

2) The defense has to improve dramatically.  This is a given, but how much improvement can we really expect with a new scheme and the players merely having one more year of experience.  Yes, we will get some players back from injury but is it enough.  Even with a completely healthy roster I cannot see this defense being able to stop the top teams in the Big Ten.

3) Special Teams.  There is nothing that shows me that this area will improve at all.

I hope I am wrong and Michigan is challenging for a Big Ten title next year.  But after looking at this team and where I see it going, I think we are projecting to be the best of the 2nd tier of teams.  It is an absolute punch in the gut for me to say that, but that is what I see.

Our problem has been

1) Ball security - We haven't taken care of the ball well enough. How many potential scoring drives have we seen fizzle out because of a fumble or an interception. This might have to do with size - since getting jumped on by 300 lbs guys while keeping the ball secure isn't the easiest thing to do.

Similarly  - are something which QBs learn over a few years. Once they have confidence and knw the plays better - they will do better.

Defense - Big plays - I attribute defensive problems on youth and new scheme. This can be fixed with Greg Robinson even, once he has quality recruits and more experience on the team.

Special Teams - Hire a coach for special teams - This is what Dave Brandon should be looking at doing.

ND, after firing Ty Willingham, and after firing Charlie, had really good recruiting classes. In fact, they are doing great this year (with BK as a 1st year coach).

Why do you assume that a new coach = losing all recruits. In fact, RR had a top 10 class (at that time) in the Lloyd/ RR class.

Also, the scheme leading to player loss also isn't correct. Again look at ND under Kelley. Most people think Mallett left because he didn't want to be at M.

It will have -some- negative effect on the program.
