No respect for BBall

Submitted by AC1997 on

I was watching ESPN College Gameday and they were doing highlights and tournament resumes for a lot of teams that played today.  They talked about Alabama (who they thought would get in despite a mediocre resume) and Nebraska (who they think is out). Then they did the highlights of our game with Minnesota.

After the game I expected them to talk about our resume....nope, just Minnesota.  They showed Minny's resume and then said "not without a huge BTT run".  They didn't say ONE THING about Michigan.  Not ONE.  How is that possible?  Nebraska is the 8th place team in a crappy B12 and they get their resume discussed?

There are a dozen reasons why Michigan will probably end up in the NIT, but somewhere on that list is that none of the talking heads are even paying attention to us or getting our name into the mainstream discussion.

I think you're far too upset about ESPN's collective opinion then it is worth.

The committee's the only one that matters and you can be sure they're looking at our resume.

I saw that too.  I found it a little odd.

If we take care of our own business, we'll get the respect we deserve.  Beat Sparty.  Take one in the BTT.  Should be a solid enough resume to be serously considered.

I saw this exact same segment and thought the exact same thing. The team that is 6-10 in conference and just lost at home is getting more bubble attention than the 8-9 team that just beat them. I think Mich was written off so long ago that nobody has realized (outside of the BTN) that they are actually building a solid resume. If we can win next weekend, the way things play out with our B10 tourney seeding will be very interesting.

Watching the BTN they are in love with our team.  If it were up to them we could still win the Big Ten conference championship.  For all the crap I give them about the "Butterfly" and their terrible announcing aka during a replay heard them call a dish to Stu a dish to Novak their love for us is pretty awesome

I wouldn't get too worked up yet.  To non-Michigan fans the argument is, yeah, they have been close, but there are no big wins.  When Mich takes care of MSU next Sat, Mich will start to be in the discussion.

I agree, I think people overlook Michigan, but I think a possible win over Sparty would help us a ton not only in national perception, but getting us set for a solid run in the Big Ten Tournament

...before I clicked on this thread, for some reason I sort of expected the theme to be, "Michigan Basketball just doesn't get any respect in Ann Arbor and this state..."

And my reply was going to be, "It's been that way since about 1947..."

Why doesn't anybody on this board think about our winning the B1G Tournament?  I've now seen the way we've played the Badgers and the Buckeyes at home.  I think we could get some hot shooting and beat anybody on the Tourney neutral court.  A #6 seed Iowa won it in 2001.

This team will be in a play-in round to the BTT.  Consequently, it will have to win four consecutive gamesto win it.  This is a young team, and young teams are terribly inconsistent.  You can't really expect a young team to win four straight against one of the strongest conferences in the country, especially with the opponents getting progressively tougher as they progress through the bracket.

I would love to see Michigan win the BTT.  I would love to win powerball tonight, too.

Not sure how you got so many points but your comments about bball are pretty much all terrible.  You want to go to the NIT.  You don't even realize that we are likely to get a top 5 seed in the BTT.  You're so negative and misinformed. Please just stop.

We could but even if we catch a 4/5 seed then we're looking at 3 straight games against probable opponents who are if not better then us then considerably bigger. We've shown we have the ability to play with those teams, but we've come up short in the win column in almost all cases. To overcome that in three consecutive days might be a tall order.

This BB team plays with intensity, has a good transition game, can play good defense, and handles the ball well.  As they improve, they will get the respect.  Yes there isn't much of it available now, but that is due to past performance rather than where they are now.  They are also a young team, and need to learn some of the basic lessons of college ball (make your free throws!!!) before getting the media attention.  I think tht if they had beaten Wisconsin, tonight's ESPN coverage would have been different.

WINNING gets attention.  This year's Michigan team has not warranted attention.  They have been inconsistent and without a win over a Top 25 program.

The whining sounds like an Ohio State fan.  They have to beat someone (not lose close).  And, while sweeping Michigan State would be nice, beating them does not qualify.

Beat Ohio State.  Beat Wisconsin.  Beat Purdue.  Just ONE of them.  Then and only then, will the attention come.

This follows ESPN's general view of UM as a non-factor in the tournament picture.  Lunardi doesn't consider them a threat, and based on their resume TODAY I have to agree.  Now, beat MSU and win the 20th game in the B1G tourney and who knows.  But right now, they needed one of those Wiscy/Kansas/OSU losses back, and beating a depleted Minny team at home, while awesome, just isn't enough right now.  But when UM is cutting down the nets at the B1G tourney this year, they'll have to pay attention then.  Right?  Right!

It's interesting to see how much ESPN loves to hate Michigan. It seems they get more publicity and more ratings the more they put down Michigan. If they aren't hating Michigan they completely ignore all of Michigan's success'. Not like ESPN matters but I wonder day in and day out whats schools pay ESPN for ESPN to make them 'look good'. Obviously tOSU and the entire SEC.

God you're a fuck. Remember when you said Wisconsin was way better than us and there was no way we would win? You really know what you're talking about. I know you're not a Michigan fan, but I can definitely tell you reside in Ohio. Just go root for another team. I thought you might leave after Minnesota but you are still here being a dumbass. If we make the tourney, will you leave?

When a team like Michigan has been down as long as it has, it acquires a certain negative "momentum," for lack of a better word. It takes a long time to change the perception among the mostly uninformed national media that something good is happening.

The same phenomenon works in MSU's case, only in the opposite direction. People across the country who aren't paying attention will give Izzo and Spartans the benefit of the doubt simply because they've been good for so long, even if their team has been on a slide for a good portion of the season.

Once they stop, then I'll respect them.  TAKE THAT ESPN!

Seriously though, let's just win the B1G tourney and laugh our way to the dance with our middle fingers in the air.

This kind of shit is the reason I will be utterly devestated if we don't beat Sparty's ass in Crisler next week.

I really don't care about what the expectations were at the beginning of the year. This athletic department has no respect left nationally or even in the state. We fucking NEED this.

But how many bubble teams lost? Harvard, while it hurts us, lost today, and in doing so locked up the Ivy only getting one bid, though I doubt they would have recieved two. Colorado St. lost again, and we can cross them off the list. Memphis, well, they got thrashed by UTEP and that game helps us big time. Nebraska took a terrible loss today and rules them out. Teams keep losing, and we keep winning....we will be dancing....Colorado has a decent record but a bad RPI and SOS...losses to New Mexico, San Fran, Oklahoma, and Harvard pretty much rules them out. Best advice ever: Just keep winning.
