thanks for your efforts for the past season and a third.

No More Enhanced UFRs
appreciate your efforts. FWIW, I think Thorin, regardless of the point he made, was unnecessarily dickish to you.
Just looked at his comment you'd think he was the proprietor of MGoBlog and he didn't do the same thing. Talk about sense of entitlement.
Yeah, I thought he used to be a fairly decent and polite poster, and just in the past 6 months or so has really turned into a dick.
Anyway, thanks for your efforts WB.
I loved the idea, but in the end it just takes way too much time for me to watch enhanced UFRs. Most of mgoblog seems to agree, so given how much work it must be to make I totally understand shutting it down. Thanks for all the effort.
Also, Thorin is a dick and this is the internet, don't worry about pissing him off.
If you think it's best to stop, then more power to you. I disagree strongly with Thorin about your posts being spam, though. Congrats on putting everything together the way you have the past season.33, you should be proud.
thanks man, those were some good posts. sorry to see you stop
The enhanced UFR viewer was a great feature, and there will be times when I really miss it. I never viewed your posts as spam, or self-promotion . I always thought of it more as a service you were offering to all of us for free. I understand if you don't want to take the time to do it anymore, but it's a shame that Thorin was such a dick to you about trying to do something cool, useful, and generous for the mgocommunity.
Admittedly I did not use them very much, but when I did, I thought they were very cool and useful. However, I always wondered what super human with a lot of time was building all of this. I understand that you want to give it up. I just hope it is because you no longer feel it is worth your time and not because one person got butthurt about it.
It seems a bit late at this point, but I will also notion that I couldn't have a given a sh*t less, that you posted a OMG-"weekly" notification that the UFR Enhancement was available. Maybe you'll embark upon this again in the future; most would probably welcome that feature back (and the notifications, minus one person, apparently).
So, I suppose that Thorin doesn't post links to something he works on week in and week out? I'd take that hypocrisy with a grain of salt.
FWIW (probably not much in a thread dedicated to my e-dickishness) I lose ad revenue every time I post an embed on the board because the CTR is so much lower here than the rest of the internet.
FWIW, I don't think complaining about ad revenue holds much weight when it's not your content. Now, you definitely do add value to the every snap videos, but most of your videos are the equivalent of copy-pastes. I really appreciate the fact that you serve as a repository of all Michigan sports videos, but an argument centered around the revenue you make from stolen content isn't sound.
Actually, I think his argument is sound. As I understand it, his argument is:
1) I am a hypocrite if and only if my actions were qualitatively similar to his.
2) It is not the case that my actions were qualitatively similar to his.
Therefore, I am not a hypocrite.
Looks sound to me. I guess you could argue with 2), but Thorin's point is that it's different because he isn't linking to his own website (and, on the contrary, is acting in a manner contrary to his own interests). I don't think he was being a hypocrite. I DO think he was being a dick though, and the soundness of this argument does nothing to address that at all.
I agree with you on the mutual exclusivity of his argument. Nonetheless, I think the reason that he complained about the enhanced UFRs is because it's using his videos and hence he is losing revenue due to someone else linking to them (is that how this stuff works?). When you consider the fact that he is complaining about someone using his videos in their own project when "his videos" to begin with are unattributed and used without expressed written consent, those in glass houses etc etc.
[As an aside, Owl, I know I've disagreed with you on a few things on the board, but you're a really thoughtful value-added new member to the board.]
I think the reason that he complained about the enhanced UFR's is because it's using his videos and hence he is losing revenue due to someone else linking to them (is that how this stuff works?).
No. I've explained why I was complaining below. His site barely affected every snap views.
OK, so he shouldn't use mgovideo as a tag (which I can understand). I thought he was just giving you credit and attributing his work (very graciously, as evidenced in this thread). You're also upset because he was originally going to make it a part of your site (and hence you'd get/split the ad revenue from enhanced UFR), but then changed his mind. If he solely developed enhanced UFR, then of course he can do whatever he wants with it. To say that it isn't valued by the mgocommunity because the threads don't get many comments (but do get a fair amount of upvotes) is not your call -- if Brian doesn't want it posted, then he can put a stop to it, but you aren't a mod.
To address your question, I was being a dick because I corresponded with the OP by email before he started his project as it was originally supposed to be part of my site. At some point he decided to make his own site without explaining to me why. Since then, every time he spams the board with links to his site, he mentions and tags mgovideo as if he has some affiliation. I thought I had made it clear to him that I didn't want mgovideo to be associated with spam. As you pointed out, I rarely post external links on the board.
Did you bother to outline your evidently ludicrous definition of spam to him, or were you keeping that a secret so you could accuse him of spam regardless of his actions?
If he didn't mention or credit (read: compliment) your work, you'd probably just be even more of a dick about it, so no, you don't get to be mad about that.
Being roughly twice a week during the football season? Seems like about how often he posts links to his site
I've been having fun with that since 2007.
I would like to take this opportunity to point out that you post 4 external links to your sites every time you post.
Other than that, I have nothing to say on this matter. Neurotics gonna neurot.
My goodness ... I went away for a few hours and this thread kind of exploded.
Anyway, Thorin's claims are not correct. My original hope was for this to be part of MGoBlog, but that was not to be. I had some offers of support, but when it was time to launch, everyone bailed out on me and said "maybe next year". Rather than toss aside all of my work, I scrambled to set up my own web site to host the app.
Only after I launched to highly favorable reviews did Thorin offer to host. By that time I had already sweated out all the setup and wanted to closely monitor activity, so I declined. I had never agreed to make it part of MGoVideo.
The guy (who is not you) who came up with the idea for enhanced UFRs started talking about it with me months before he asked you to develop it. Judging from your comments, I think it's more likely that you didn't know than that you're lying. We should have just talked to each other instead of trying to communicate though him.
You are misinformed although it is true that we never had any direct contact and this may have led to some misunderstanding. Nobody asked me to do this. It was my own idea and I started a post on the board one day asking the community what they thought of it.
It was in response to that post that I was contacted by someone apparently associated with you (I will leave him out of this except to say that he has never been anything but completely supportive). He said that he had been thinking along much the same lines and suggested that he might be able to provide a host server, although my understanding was that it was on University-owned equipment. Anyway, that fell through and I had to go it completely on my own.
I most certainly am not lying about any of this and I trust that you too may have gotten some false impressions from lack of direct communications. In any event, I have stated that my reasons for stopping may have been precipitated by your comments, but that the decision stands on its own merits. I was not intending to start an ugly flame war. Still, I don't want to leave any false statements unchallenged.
P.S. I would suggest that if you feel anything more needs to be discussed, we take it offline.
It's definitely not impossible that two people had the same idea at the same time, but I don't think that's the issue. If you're stopping enhanced UFRs just because of me, don't. I would just prefer for you not to post anything that suggests that it's somehow part of my site when you chose for it not to be. The copyright issue is a weak excuse. Are you saying you weren't aware of any copyright issue a) when you had the idea, b) while developing it c) when it was rejected by Brian due to copyright concerns or d) when videos were deleted due to copyright infringement?
P.S. I would suggest that if you feel anything more needs to be discussed, we take it offline.
Lol, it's a bit late for that, don't you think?
WTF are you talking about you dont spam the board with links to your site? Everytime you post you have 4 links posted that all go to your lame ass sites and videos. I wouldn't even waste my time looking at the "stolen" videos your lame ass uploads.
http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/video-borges-and-mattison-pressers-102
But there's still more than the whole two posts you got there.
You do something useful, but I'd really reign in the being a dick about it, or post your contract with the NCAA, Big Ten, and the University of Michigan. Because you keep this up on how you're losing profit on content you're STEALING, and someone is liable to report you to the University and have you shut down.
You're quite active in this thread. What did I ever do to you?
Where you have been pissing over a LOT of posts lately, for no discernable reason, which seems to be a radical change (I don't know if it's been 6 months as he says...but it's been noticable), coupled with your rather nonchalant attitude and arrogance in their thread towards stealing other people property and then complaining something is cutting into your profits when you resell it. Most people around here are pretty open to some fair usage, and don't think it's that big a deal for some minor web usage of materials from a major corporation/insitution. And if you're doing it for free, more power to you. But once you start making a profit off of it, it's a different story. And even then, the attitude to take is "yeah, I'm doing something wrong, but what I get back doesn't really equal the work I put into it, and if they told me to stop, I would." Not "Ha Ha, they can't catch me!!" The latter, and no one cares, and probably backs you against the big, bad corporations. The latter just makes you look like a crook.
Yeah, from the sound and looks of stuff, it might be time to report Thorin to the University. Seriously, you're mad about losing money over straight stolen content? I could easily do what you do every week Thorin, it's very simple. Building the enhanced UFR actually takes a little skill.
I'm obviously not mad or wouldn't keep posting embeds. I was just pointing out the difference between using the board as my personal intensive care unit to keep my failed site alive and literally paying to share videos with you guys.
As for reporting me, the AD and media department are already well aware of mgovideo. They don't like me but they tolerate me because I do so much of a better job of distributing their content than they do.
Sure sounds like you're mad with all those shots you are taking.
At this point he's probably mad about something else entirely, namely, comments like yours. Thorin provides a service here, not everyone needs to put their two cents in.
Not that I really care that much, but you do realize he provides a very simple "service" right? I could really care less if he's upset about my comment or not. This is a message board, created for people to put their two cents in. Not sure why you singled me out, but it's really not a huge deal to me.
The point here being, he was a jerk to another member, now that service won't be provided. Service that actually took hard work and know how to do. I'm not saying I don't appreciate what Thorin does, because I do appreciate it. But it's neither hard to do nor is it hard to figure out how to do. Where as the OP's actually took some work and know how. So basically he ruined a good thing for MGoBlog whether the OP wants to admit it or not, it seems pretty coincidental that the OP decided to just give up after Thorin's comment.
Whatever, I don't have an interest in this argument. It's just pretty strange that people who both want to do some good for MGoBlog can't get along. I mean we're all here for the same general reason, and both of them are trying to make the MGoBlog community better, but they can't work together, which is a bummer. I'd like to see both continue, and people get along.
I'm not saying I don't appreciate what Thorin does, because I do appreciate it. But it's neither hard to do nor is it hard to figure out how to do.
While I agree that it's not technically hard for me to upload a video, it is hard when you have a full-time job, a wife and a 3 year old to justify spending as much time as I do uploading as many videos as I do.
If they find out not only are you turning it into a for profit venture, but you're acting like you have proprietary interest in the content. Lawyers care about that kinda thing.
The BTN's lawyers pretend to care. ABC/ESPN not so much.
Yeah, let's delete all college football videos from the internet because I'm a dick.
Only if you assume that everyone who watches your videos would visit your site if you stopped posting links. Really, most people wouldn't even take the time to watch most of those videos if you didn't post them here. So, you are gaining revenue, albeit at a lower rate per view, by posting your links here. I don't think that's why you do it, though. I think you do it because you are trying to be a nice guy and let everyone know when the videos are available. WolverineBlue was just doing the same thing. He takes someone else's content, packages it up in a convenient format, then let's everyone know when it's ready.
Facts are now overrated. Nice work mgoboard. I'm done with this thread.
I have a real job and get about $0.10/hour for mgovideo stuff. Every snap alone takes me about 6 hours a week to cut. I've had ads on my videos from 3 years and this is the first time I've ever seen anyone complain.
I think folks who used it though it was cool. I certainly did. Without the weekly post I would never have known it was there, its my preferred method of going through the UFR. I don't go to many other sites on Michigan football but this one and tremendous unless its linked here.
I wish you would reconsider, but thank you for your work.
Not even Ace Williams'? You're missing out...
A thousand hates, Magnus.
Sorry I forgot to mention TTB as well Magnus. My apologies. But like the others, I get there because you post here.
It's too late now. My feelings have already been crushed.
Thorin seems to be on his period as of late or something. Not only in this instance, but when I posted the highlights of the 1999 game against syracuse he had this comment-
WHY? You obviously have some disease that makes you want to highlight the 2 or 3 games in the last 30 years that WH hasn't already done. Get that checked out.
I see posting highlights of old games as a positive. It lets people relive memories and it educates the younger or average fan who maybe didn't see that game. I try to complete seasons of Michigan Football on YouTube. I put up games WH doesn't have up.
If anything I benefit the MGoYouTubers because I'm saving each individual person by shelling out $18 a DVD or VHS copy of these older games. And I'm not even close to the progress I want in this. I'm not even in knee-deep yet on this project.
Some people are becoming too full of themselves if they think there's any unofficial chronicler of Michigan Football.
I'm not saying Wolverine Historian is the only person who can do highlight videos. In fact, I'm eventually going to import his videos into the mgovideo database, but introducing highlights of the 1999 Syracuse game by saying that you've been looking for the game for years is absurd and obviously untrue. Sorry if calling him out hurt his feelings or whatever, but if you want a game, you go to Art Vuolo and buy it (SOMEBODY SHOULD REPORT HIM TO THE UNIVERSITY!!!1). I'm assuming that's what he did and the reason why he chose that game is because WH doesn't buy games and hadn't done that one yet.
I'd give a thought to reporting him too. Wolverine Historian never said anything about it, because he has class, and isn't driven by ego. Maybe you should follow suit.
I'd give a thought to reporting him too.
Good luck with that. If you don't know who Art is, you can read about him here.
RE your personal attack, please don't pretend like you know me.
I have been looking for it for years. You don't know me. That and the 1998 EMU game, 1986 ND game are the big three I'm searching for.
I do buy Art's videos (See 2004 vs SDSU, another one coming soon). I'm making quite an investment in this project.
It was nice to have for a year and a third of this season. Thanks
Wow, total dick move by Thorin. I value your enhanced UFR's and didn't mind that you posted the weekly updates to the board one bit. So what if your threads didn't generate much discussion?
That said, if you still want to do the enhanced UFRs but are now turned off to posting the updates on the board, just post twitter updates and I'll be the first to follow you!
Well, Thorin/MGoVideo has earned an unsub from youtube and an unfollow from twitter. Can't stand by and allow pots to call kettles black.
So you were following me all this time because you thought I was a nice guy? My tweets are just links to videos without comment.
I don't think the hate here is warranted. I just don't. I think you provide a valuable service that I most certainly take advantage of. If you look at your posts I try to upvote every one.
Now, its okay to over-extend yourself occasionally - we've all done it, at one time or another. Grownups forgive these things. I've made some bad posts, but I don't have the time served that you do, so I can understand the investment. I wouldn't try to fight this though, just take the lumps and keep doing what you do.
What did Aristotle say? The ideal man bears the accidents of life with dignity and grace, making the best of circumstances. We can't all live that, but I hope you and the OP find the grace to continue your contributions, because ultimately, the community suffers the most from the gap in content if this ends poorly.
I look forward to more Thorin and enhanced UFR posts.
Thanks for the post. This could have easily devolved from a Thorin is a dick thread to a Thorin meltdown. I'm doing my best to avoid that.
Your time so we have nothing to say about how you use it. Even dickish comments don't have the right to sway you one way or another. About the AD revenue.. Nobody gives a shit. Its a free site.
Thorin-
I don't care if you are a dick or not, please keep posting the every snap videos.
If you are going to post an every snap again does it have to be this one?!!!
EDIT: Or at least limit it to the snaps...cutting out the turnovers?
Yeah, that's why I didn't post this one until now.
While it's certainly possible you'd be receiving a threatening letter at some point in the future, you have a fairly compelling defense under the "transformative use" doctrine, a niche of the more well known "fair use" exception. Unless someone thinks they could win an argument that your posting of enhanced UFRs (or Brian's un-enhanced UFR's, for that matter) could substitute for the original work (i.e., the original broadcast of the game), you're in a good defensive position. Let me put it this way, if I were representing one side or the other in such a suit, I'd much rather have your cards than the copyright owner's.
As many in blogging can tell you, the line isn't drawn on what's fair use or isn't, but what you can do before somebody with more lawyers tells you stop.
Fair use protects very little nowadays, because the copyright holders hire guns to threaten actions when they know they don't have a case, and we fold because we don't have the means to defend ourselves despite being 100% right. Until there's a class action against the worst offenders (Thought Equity Motion and The Ohio State University are two) who go around bullying small-time media in the name of controlling their brands, fair use might as well not even exist.
Thought Equity Motion is now called T3Media. They have one guy in their Denver office who deletes videos and sends out scary letters. He's annoying but not as evil as XOS Digital IME.
Man I hate it when companies who've ruined their brand by being terrible evil bad companies change their name. Right Xfinity?
When he wholesale just takes Inside Michigan Football or posted pressers it's not any substitute. It's the actual product.
I think you're being incredibly naive about what kind of a product Inside Michigan Football is. It's eerily similar to what military information operations/public affairs calls command information. They're not selling a 20 minute TV show; they're selling the program. Anything that increases the visibility of that information is, in the AD's view, good for the program.
http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/082212aab.html
They only offer access to the video on mgoblue.com if you pay for a subscription to MGoBlueTV. If what you were saying was true, they would make it publicly available. Not to mention the fact that the AD isn't the only party involved since it's being aired by Fox Sports Detroit. Fox Sports and their advertisers don't particularly care if people see the information, they mainly care that people are seeing the commercials, which I presume you're cutting out.
I've tried but it's impossible to edit the commercials out of PNC Bank's Inside Michigan Football brought to you by Hyundai. My point was that the university profits more from the football program than mgoblue subscriptions which I assume are part of an agreement with Fox. People who watch it for free on YouTube may not be willing to pay for a subscription and even if they are, the amount of lost revenue is insignificant compared to the increased visibility of the product. Meanwhile, Fox is busy deleting NFL videos.
Thorin is the one MGoUser I would least want to piss off...
Then why draw attention to yourself (and your site [again]) by starting a Thorin is a dick thread? I've obviously pissed off seven or eight people but if I ever stop posting, I can promise that there won't be any grand announcement.
It's not all about you.
I can guarantee that several posters would be wondering what happened to the Enhanced UFR if it suddenly stopped. I certainly would.
Fair enough, the OP is not all about me, but the thread pretty much is. Just to be clear, there's nothing I can do to make him stop doing enhanced UFRs or posting links to them on the board. He's made his own decision to stop and given a reason/excuse that has nothing to do with me personally. It's not his fault that everyone used that as an excuse to attack me, but it was probably predictable.
And you still apparently haven't learned how MGoBlog works.
Yes, there were going to be some jibes in your direction in this thread as it were. But the primary reason this thread is suddenly all about you is because YOU MADE YOURSELF THE STORY. You did this to yourself.
But the primary reason this thread is suddenly all about you is because YOU MADE YOURSELF THE STORY.
Huh? There were 20 or 30 posts attacking me before I even noticed this thread.
Your first reply was at 6:34PM Eastern; there were sixteen replies at the time. Of those sixteen, nobody would say that more than nine had anything to do with you. Those nine:
regardless of the point Thorin made, he was unecessarily dickish
No kidding. Just looked at his comment you'd think he was the proprietor of MGoBlog and he didn't do the same thing. Talk about sense of entitlement.
Yeah, I thought he used to be a fairly decent and polite poster, and just in the past 6 months or so has really turned into a dick. Anyway, thanks for your effots WB.
Also, Thorin is a dick and this is the internet, don't worry about pissing him off.
I disagree strongly with Thorin about your posts being spam, though.
I understand if you don't want to take the time to do it anymore, but it's a shame that Thorin was such a dick to you about trying to do something cool, useful, and generous for the mgocommunity.
So, I suppose that Thorin doesn't post links to something he works on week in and week out? I'd take that hypocrisy with a grain of salt.
Thorin seems to be on his period as of late or something.
Wow, total dick move by Thorin
The majority of these posts are not attacking you. I count four responses to your post in the previous thread, three that are critical of your persona/work, and two that are personal attacks. If you count differently, please let me know. I'd love to see the twenty or thirty attacks before 6:34, though.
OK sorry, not 30 posts calling me a dick. Only 9 out of 16. Thanks for clearing that up.
Saying you were being a dick in the pervious thread is not attacking you personally, as you originally claimed (I counted four, and considering your posts later in this thread, were those really inaccurate?). Further, if you read what I posted, I simply said I disagree. I was unaware that meant I was calling you a dick; thanks for informing me.
I count 5 dicks, 1 sense of entitlement, 1 hypocrisy, 1 on his period and your post which I didn't take as an attack. Of those posts, I ignored the 5 people who called me a dick (because I mostly agree) and replied only to the one that called me a hypocrite. You also forgot to count the OP which was like "Thorin is my best friend ever, but he took a huge dump on me three days ago and no one noticed so I'm starting this thread to alert you to that and also let you know that I've decided not to contribute any effort to the community and it's all his fault. Oh and copyright something."
Plus 1 reply that's just someone bragging that I managed to find the 1 pixel of Reply button behind the Moderate button that covers it once you get threaded this far. #mousedexterityFTW
Also I find what you do so useful (seriously it has saved me so much time when trying doing Hokepoints/Museday columns) that I think you've earned the right to be a dick on occasion.
It's amsuing to come to a thread where someone has been called out and then I wonder "Hm I wonder if they will post anything in here". Then I can scroll down and just see all the gray bars with "(Score:-1 Trolling)" and find said person. It's like a built-in filter function on mgoblog
Viewing a UFR in the viewer is an entirely different kind of flying altogether than just watching the every snap video. Thorin loses no money on me watching in the viewer, and in fact gains some.
Upshot: this really looks like a petty cat fight between two people who provide(d) really great and valuable content to the site. Here's to hoping they can reconcile.
Wow. I was going to comment, and then this bitterness volcano erupted all over the thread.
So I'm going to avoid the acrimony and just post my congratulations to the OP anyway. Your product was useful and well-executed. It was unique. And while it may not be worth the time or the personal hassles, it was good while it lasted and you should be proud of it. I hope you won't look back on your efforts with regret.
Move on, learn something from the experience, and do well in your next efforts. And forgive, too.
So here's some pictures of puppies
Also, here's a music video
I don't know about you guys, but my productivity just went through the roof! This stuff really works!
where are the kittens?
All I know is that nobody here should even THINK about posting pics of the coaching staff at their tailgate. That territory is mine!
this thread is fucking ridiculous. I don't even know what to say. I . . .
Why is Thorin a mod here? I don't post much, and the first time I tried to blockquote I messed it up. I edited it, fixed a few, then went back to fix the rest and he locked it so I was unable to edit it. Just seemed so childish, but whatever. Now we're losing a very cool UFR feature because he's whiny.
You won't be able to edit your post after I hit save, same if you replied to me below this one. Thorin is not a mod, FTR the mods are: BiSB (for now), profitgoblue, Brian, Seth, Ace, Heiko, Zone Left, and then I think jamiemac and Chewer D have mod powers, but rarely use them.
Got it, thanks. Complaint redcated then.
