Nice job on helping the media spread nothing.  If the AD and Hoke were on media lock down until the presser, then I'm sure the team is too.  No comment means eactly that.  Just let it go.

Honestly, if Hoke plans on running a pro-set, I hope Denard transfers.  I would hate to see him go, but after everything that kid has done for Michigan, I would hate even more to see him sit on the bench or do anything that isn't exactly what he wants to do.  If Denard went to the SEC and won a Heisman, I would be cheering him all the way.

I would love to see some sort of comprimise between the rigid pro-style everyone is expecting and the "spread and shred" we have seen the last 3 years.  I think getting Denard in space on roll outs and what not will allow him to use his legs and arm to make plays. I honestly don't think running him as much as last year would be a good thing.  Also, if Denard can show he can be successful in a pro-style type offense I think that would increase his chances of making it to the NFL as a QB.

They were running a pass first spread.

I don't know if Denard could run something quite like that.  He's an okay passer, but his high completion percentage is largely due to his running ability.  I don't know if he could translate to a more traditional pass game that doesn't throw off of the zone read.  He seems too innacurate and too prone to bad reads.  The reads part should improve with time, but I don't know if his accuracy will.

Yes his biggest strength is his dual threat, but he proved this past year that he can throw the ball.  Yes, he made some awful reads in the passing game which resulted in interceptions, but you have to remember that he probably spent a lot of practice time through the weeks working on running plays.  all I'm saying is if he is put in the situaltion where his primary job is to read defenses and throw the ball, then that is what he will work on the most in practices and I think that will result in fewer interceptions.  I just don't see why he can't continue to develop his game at Michigan.

that Hoke wants to use a "west coast" offense .... which in my mind would be great for Denard.  It s used in the NFL which would be viewed positively by scouts.

I would also descibe what Auburn runs as a version of the west coast offense.  I have seen several posters talk about Auburn's offense as a spread, which Oregon's is, but with Newton more of a pocket passer and few plays other than a QB draw designed for him to run, makes it look more like west coast to me.

I think Denard will play QB for us next season. He won't be running iso's 15 times a game, thus won't be getting hurt every game. I'm sure they know all about him already and will adapt the play calling to his strengths (roll outs, etc). He will continue to improve as a passer and will continue gobbling up yardage on the ground, namely on scrambles. This is probably going to end up being better for everyone.

Whether denard can be successful in a pro style offense remains to be seen, but i personally think he would be more effective on scrambles and could gain far more yards than always doing a QB iso..

 

This past year the qb iso's became so predictable because we don't have much of a threat at the RB position.  It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.  The spring game will probably give us a pretty good glimpse

Coaches work with the players they have. They'll do everything to keep Denard here and he'll be the quarterback if he stays. Why do you assume he won't be here? Because they won't be running spread options? Deanard's a quarterback and wants to play quarterback. He can do it out of the spread or out of a shotgun pro-style. The passing aspects of the two offenses are not that different. He can succeed in either. Andrew Luck had over 700 yards rushing this season out of a pro-style offense, and he isn't nearly as athletic as Denard. And it isn't as if Denard should run the ball twenty times a game, no matter the offense. Ten to twelve should be the max coming from designed runs. Borges's quarterbacks never had any rushing yards because they couldn't run. That's pretty easy to see. At least give the staff a chance, instead of assuming all is lost because we didn't bring in a proven winner.

If the players were as pessimistic as this fanbase is, they wouldn't win a game next season.

while I love Brian and what he has done at his site, I have stopped giving much credence to his views on Michigan coaches.  

His pollyannaish views towards RR as his time here unwound undermined much of his analysis.  His early statements on Hoke and the obvious disappointment in being so publicly wrong still cloud his views and unfortunately those of many of the loyal (and blind) followers.  
I look forward to a return a time where debates rage on high priority issues such as uniforms, 3 star vs 4 stars high schoolers and other critical news in the Michigan universe.

Could we run an offense like the Philadelphia Eagles? Not that Denard is in Vick's class (yet), they do have similar skill sets and Vick was very good this year...is this the right match between skills and scheme?

With the progress Denard made between his fresh and soph seasons, I really expect him to come back next year as an even more polished passer. He backslid a bit late this season, which is not terribly unusual for a young player, but the guy has a great attitude and, it appears, an exceptional work ethic. He'll come back next as a more seasoned QB who will see the passing game slow down more for him and I expect he'll be better at reading coverages and making the right throw. Not perfect, but add a similar gain to that he made last off-season and, oh shit! I'm not going to bother worrying about whether he transfers until when/if that comes to pass, and then there's nothing to worry about either. Right now, he's Brady Hoke's starting quarterback, and Hoke has got to be the last person who wants to see him go.

Why does everyone think picking up a new offense in one offseason is going to be easy? Let's not fool ourselves, the offense that denard would have run best next year is the one he broke ncaa records in last year.

Please, folks, he was recruited and groomed by the now fired head coach to be the centerpiece of a spread offense. He was in the running for a Heisman under that system. Either he bolts to one of those southern teams running variations of the spread, or BH will adapt the offense to him for at least a year. DB and BH cannot affored his defection - hence the lunch with him. Such a defection would make the criticisms of Mallet's defection under RR a little shallow, don't you think?
