The one thing that really pissed me off from the conference that no one is discussing is that Dave Brandon said he wants to win big ten championships and go to the Rose Bowl and isn't concerned with National Championships. F that, thats a major issue. Who settles for that.
But to win a MNC you pretty much need to witn the B10 championship first, and being in a BCS game or the national championship game will then take care of itself - at least that's how I took what he said, and I have no problem with that.
If you were able to conclude that from what he said than i am obviously on board with that. But everyone wanted to change the offense and move away from Lloyds way because we weren't happy with rosebowls and winning seasons but wanted to take that next step. So now were not for that?
agreed that's what he meant-
Who settles for that
Bo. I think that's the reality of being in a state/region that doesn't have the home-grown talent of Cali/the Southeast.
Tell that to Ohio State
Michigan ... not so much.
Also MSU eats into our recruiting these days - what competition does OSU have in Ohio? Cincy?
That was a major "what?" moment. Are we conceding the National Championship or was DB trying to harken back to the days of Bo and Woody? DB makes me cringe when I hear snippets of his opionions. Truth be told, the more I hear and perceive, the less I like. MSU has an athletic department mentality I envy, I'm thinking of Hollis, I believe. Maybe it's wrong, it is starting to be bigger league than UM. Honestly, we look archaic, stuck in the past and kinda bush league.
No, it wasn't a "what?" moment, the poster that had a problem with the statement just had a "I want to be angry where's my keyboard" moment and typed a silly response. And I don't know who would envy MSU's athletic department outside of their W-L on the field this season.
MSU has a ridiculous amount of off the field incidents involving student athletes, scheduled a no-win game with Boise to raise THEIR OWN profile, their facilities are less than stellar outside of Spartan Stadium, and they can't seem to fill Spartan Stadium (or Munn) without giving away free tickets with Subway 6" subs. I also don't want to be the athletic department that has to beg for a BCS bid.
The reason why you may not like snippets of DB's comments are because they are snippets and probably not in context. Watch the whole presser (or the whole conversations with comments that you don't like) and if you still disagree, then I take back my statements.
If you asked point blank if DB thinks Michigan should win national titles, I bet he'd say yes. But he would be foolish to place that burden on his next coach before he's even hired him.
I really hoped that my school was better than that. I really hoped that the admin at my alma mater couldn't be so short sighted as to fire a coach after only three years. I thought my school was better than that.
Now our program is as tasteless as Domino's pizza. Brandon has a lot of experience selling a cheap, boring product.
With Stewie half way out the door at WV, i really hope RR goes home and takes Denard with him.
people who love a coach more than their program
Yes, thank you. Michigan football is and always will be bigger than one name.
"there is no one and I mean no one that is bigger than the team, including me."
Bo, I hope you are laying your soft hands upon DB today and give him strength to make the correct coaching decisions. -Amen
Bo is in a casket six feet under. Just like the program.
It seems to me that many college football fans have this unrealistic idea of what it takes to win a NC. With the exception of Princeton and Yale, since 1869 no program has won more than 13 national championships (and thats debatable) depending on your source. This idea that a coach has to take you to a NC is unrealistic at best. A shot at the conference championship and with the bowl system being what it is, a chance to play in the Rose Bowl (BCS Bowl) is a sensible expectation. It's not out of the question to expect that you give it a run every few years but with the rarity of actually playing in and/or winning a NC, I don't think he's out of line by what he said.
Who the hell is REALLY thinking about National Championships? I just want to beat OSU for the first time in forever.... We could go 1-11 next year and I frankly don't give a shart if that 1 is Ohio State
you said it all. Oh how I hate Ohio State
Have we turned into MSU now?
No we haven't turned into MSU because OSU feels the same way about us as we do about them. MSU on the otherhand thinks of us as their primary rival but doesn't get that reciprocated.
That being said, I'd much prefer to go 2-9 with wins over MSU and OSU next year (12-0 would be great too...).
That's not what he said. He said that if you can do that - win the B1G- consistently, then "all kinds of good things" will happen, and you'll get to play for the MNC "every few years".
First of all, the universally-revered Bo Schembechler said exactly that with regards to the nat'l title. Win what we can control: The Big Ten. The rest will take care of itself. DB may just be emulating that attitude.
Second, and a poster made this point already, if you win the Big Ten, there is a pretty damn good chance that you'll be in contention for the NCG after winning the B1G championship game. If you win the B1G, aren't undefeated, and don't get to go to the NCG, do you really have much to complain about? You could've won them all.
Third, would you be angry to be Wisconsin heading into January 1? Go to the Rose Bowl? If our #1 goal is to win the Big Ten and we do so as frequently as Lloyd (5 times, albeit some were shared, in 12 years), I'd say the hire will be thought of as a universal success unless we go 3-9 in between those seasons.
I feel like this is a "step away from the keyboard" moment.
That sounded really stupid back when Bo was preaching it too. Did you miss the part where DB explained that the strength of the B10 usually places its winner in a position to contend for a national championship?
How about we figure out how to beat Michigan Agricultural College and then worry about winning a f**king national championship.
Having not personally been there when Bo said it, the context of his win the Big Ten go to the Rose Bowl statement was that all we can control is winning on the field. If we win all of our games then we will win the Big Ten and go to the Rose Bowl which we can also win. The National Championship is not up to the players or coaches it's up to polls and writers and now computers. We can't control them, so we will do everything thing we can to take care of what we can control.
Do you really think DB would need to pay Hoke more than $2.5M/year? Here he is, quoted in AA.com.
No matter who the next coach is, Brandon acknowledged Wednesday the next Wolverines football coach will get a raise.
I agree Brandon's comments about competitive salary are (yet another) reason Hoke is just not happening. In particular, he emphasized that he'd made clear to MSC and the regents -- "my boss and my boss's bosses" -- we should no longer be paying middle of the pack salary. No way, no how could Brady Hoke command even as much as Rich Rod, let alone more -- heck, I think he'd do it pro bono.
I'd be surprised if Hoke is one of the early targets, but it would not surprise me at all if he ends up being hired after our first choices turn us down. This job is not nearly as attractive as it was 3 years ago now that people have seen how Rodriguez was treated.
I wanted to say the same thing. Brian's going too far with the Hoke-bashing. And the legions of posters who parrot everything he says aren't helping things any.
welcome to start your own blog and voice your opinions there. Brian has his own blog and do you really want it to turn into some msm, corporate, yes-man type blog??? I for one like to read what Brian has to say and form my own opinions based on what I take in.
Only Seinfeld can bring me joy right now. thank you.
It's funny you say this. As soon as the press conference was over, I went to the gym then popped in season 4. Now im on season 7 and in a good mood.
Frankly it disgusts me.
Dave Brandon: "I'm from Ann Arbor and I'm on a mission of mercy. Mary Sue sent me."
I had the chance to meet Jack Lemmon once. What a classic actor!
(Your name's Brandon?)
Maybe we want to see what happens with Harbaugh and everyone else before we draw this conclusion. If Brandon's statements are to be taken at face value, the coaching search is officially a couple hours old.
So he may just be a poor opener?
I had the utmost respect for Brandon. I just can't believe that we're literally at square one right now. It seems inconceivable to me that this great businessman did not have and research and potentially check out the possibility of a Plan B if his obvious Plan A failed.
David Brandon, your pimp hand is suspended pending permanent revocation and banishment to wherever Bill Martin's spine went based on how you handle this coaching search.
At least you know where you are. Nobody ever messes up and then says, "Oh well, back to Oval Eight."
"We’re surrounded. That simplifies our problem of getting to these people and killing them." — November 1950, during Chosin Reservoir campaign
-Lieutenant General Lewis Burwell "Chesty" Puller
That's not really how I took it.
It seemed fairly obvious from what was said (and what wasn't) that talks with JH are still ongoing. I have the feeling that a lot of DB's comments (or lack thereof) were aimed directly at JH. He went out of his way to both confirm that talks with Harbaugh had occured, but was very broad in his timeline of said talks (over 3 years). You don't parce your words that carefully without a good reason, and I don't think "JH rebuffed us" qualifies.
His comments about not finding fault in whoever is chosen scares the shit out of me, but it could all be a very elaborate ruse aimed directly at Jim. He also made sure to say that money wasn't going to be an object.
I don't know, this whole thing is impossible to read. I just hope it ends well, for all of our sake.
I heard an air of negotiation in his voice. I saw a look of plea bargaining in his eyes.
Points are down on the MGoBoard?! I can say whatever I want with no repercussions?!?! FARTY FARTY POO PANTS FARTY POOP CRAP.
Negged for not acknowledging the power I wield. Unless nothing happens when I hit "save," and then self-negged for hubris.
EDIT: I changed my mind. MGoBlog should be a neg-free zone at least until the collective binge drink wears off.
If I could say shitballs on MgoBlog, I would be soooo happy...
He looked like a deer in headlights to me. I didn't hear it because I had to have the presser muted. But the look did not inspire confidence.
My gut feeling is JH was interested until THE BOWL WIN put him at the top of the world and he may have verbally committed and then Dee-committed, putting DB in an unanticipated quandry. DB will still wait until it's proven JH has signed with another team before he starts plan B. Miracles may occur. Look ! A flying pig !
But that's the point. If DB;s statements are taken at face value and the search IS only a couple of hours old, then he screwed this up already. In fact, if he isn't getting JH, then there was no need for the delay in the first place and he should have made this move in November. After losing part of the 2008 class and having massive attrition, we cannot affort a "lost recruiting class" which is exactly what we are now guaranteed. Guaranteed - there is no scenario (even JH) in which we do not lose a few recruits AND fail to close on the few kids still considering us.
But, putting the who insane time table aside for a second, even if he wanted to wait to "evaluate" RR under now, he should have lined up coaching replacement because he certainly knew that there was a non-zero chance that he would be firing RR. He didn;t have to name a replacement at the presser, but he should have been far along in his search and been able to have someone in place by the LATEST Friday so that the new coach and his staff can hit the recruiting trail ASAP!
Major fail, DB.
