Nix Flagrant Foul

Submitted by Ziff72 on

Nix's flagrant is just something that drives me nuts.   What is the difference between what Nix did and what Woford did to GR3?    Nothing really, except Nix outweighs Craft by 100lbs.   I hate when the foul is determined because of the size of the player or more precisely the differential of size between the 2 players.     Nix is a goon but if he made the exact same play on Thomas it doesn't get called.   Too bad it wasn't Spike who got that breakaway we would be BIg Ten champs.

All right I'm done bitching please return to hating the basketball team and looking for spring football nuggets.

Yeah the iPhone app guy is aware of that but it's hard to fix. On the site it's a Drupal module that hides any posts by someone we caved. The troll doesn't see that and unless we also block he can still post--just he can see it. I think the troll also gets put on the old old server which runs really slow. It's not easy to copy that on the app im led to believe. Anyway we split the ads he gets on the app, while we keep a way larger ad buy for those who load the whole site, so I guess you guys using the site proper deserve the troll-free environment for being incrementally more valuable.

I somewhat agree with you (in terms of there should had been a flagrant on Watford) but Nix CLEARLY made no basketball play where Watford probably did not...the difference may be minor but still a difference.

If a flagrant 2 was called I could see how MSU could be pissed but he did not make any attempt at the ball so a flagrant 1 was a good call, IMHO.

I think Glen Robinson lll got screwed twice with no flagarants called against him. The IU game was an missed call and the Ohio game he got hit in the head late, but everyone forgets that because Michigan pulled out the W. I just hate the inconsitency of officiating this year.

You are correct. There was a huge study done in the last decade where a bunch of English soccer refs came to the US to try and figure out why we aren't better at the sport. One of their major conclusions was that US refs at every level (the study mostly looked at soccer refs but im sure it applies to other sports as well) treat fouls differently depending on the size disparity between the two parties involved. Ie, calling the Nix incident a flagrant while not calling the Watford foul. In soccer, the result is that bigger, stronger, more athletic players get "Harrison Bergeron'd" and their development can be hindered.

I think it also plays into our love for the underdog as a country. Watch any game in any sport where one team is hopelessly overmatched skill and size wise and for some reason that squad, not the smaller less talented one, will seemingly have trouble with not fouling. Refs are human and I think subconsciously they try to "even things up" between teams and certainly between players .

but they say Watford's was worse.

GR3 was on a clear breakaway.  Enough said.

...and, after the push in the back, he slapped GR3 on the shoulder which gave him the 'making a play at the ball' call.  But he was about 3 feet away from the ball where he made the slap as GR had the ball extended.

Nix also slapped at Craft's shoulder which was the entire foul.  You really could make an argument that Nix's pull on the shoulder was very close to the ball.  If Craft had lifted the ball for a shot (he just kept it tucked), Nix might have hit it.

The difference is that Nix attempted to hack off Aaron Craft's head with his arm to the point where the announcers had to debate whether or not it was an F1 or F2. While with Watford's you COULD make an argument he was making a play on the ball.

When people are moving that fast around one another, that is going to happen. Sometimes the slow motion replays make it look worse. It looked like he tried to go for the ball, but was too fat and slow to get there in time so he got his neck. (Lol Sorry I had to) I think maybe it could have been in intentional foul? But I think flagrant is pushing it.
