Night games for rivalry games -- DISCUSS

Submitted by DISCUSS Man on

Your thoughts on them and should they happen here?

I say no because of the fighting idiots outside the game after a 3:30 kickoff.

with a 8pm kick-off at both the Horseshe and the Big House would be outstanding. Night games are far more electric, can't argue that, to have the greatest rivalry played under the lights, late November, in the Shoe or Shit house would be one of the most watched, if not the most watched games of the year. But it also would be great for recruiting, showing kids that every year they get to play in that game with that environment. Why we have not done it yet is beyond me. A noon kick-off is really selling the entire rivalry short these days.

YES.

Night games suck. As cool as the 2011 one was and even the 2013 one, I think we opened Pandora's Box by having them.

Who wants to drive home at 3am? And if you're one of those crazy people who leave directly after the game, why would you want to sit in a start/stop line at 1am?

They're so hype, right? The Northwestern game was 3:30 and that atmosphere was electric. NORTHWESTERN. 3:30.

Leave the night games to the Southern and West coast schools. There's no need for them here.

I'm a Noon lover for life but I'll take 3:30 every day over night games (as long as there's no 3:30 home games in November)

Northwestern and MSU were electric because both teams were good and we're actually winning this year. Imagine a night game, with Harbaugh as coach, two storied teams, and we're actually a good team. The world would explode by the pure awesome that would take place in the Big House.

World exploded on Saturday. I don't see any need for rival conference night games. If anything, do it in September and make a nothing game into a something game. Screw it. Play Oregon State at night. It would just take a throw away game and making it something.

A more tepid crowd slash home field advantage hurts on the field as well as in recruiting. Hurts fans who enjoy tailgating for longer than 8am to 11am, and the environment is also less fun than games finishing at sunset or under the lights.

Sure, we should have a few noon games a year (MAC snacks, IU/Rutgers/Maryland, Ohio State in late November), but not throwing in a night game along with a couple 3:30 starts would be stupid.

I honestly don't understand how you can be compelled by nature to run out and purchase literally every single uniformzz debacle that ever existed and then be getoffmylawny about something that is actually fun, particularly for students.

Waking up at butt-thirty in the morning to get to a noon game in decent time to find parking and tailgate and beat a little bit of the traffic isn't any better than waiting til 1 AM to leave the game.

The words "beat traffic" make my skin crawl.

When I go to games, I get there early and leave at dark. Our tailgate group is literally the last one left within site around the stadium (on Potter).

I like getting up early for games, getting the win and enjoying the rest of the day knowing we won while tailgating and watching other games at the tailgate.

Actually, for the hardcore college football fan, watching other games is one of the most challenging paradoxes of fandom. On the one hand, you absolutely love going to a game; you love the scene, the people everywhere, the atmosphere, the tailgates. The sounds and sights from the stadium. The experience.

On the other hand LSU is playing at Auburn or Florida State is playing Notre Dame and you're hyped for the matchup and you really want to see it. It's tough to do both. Even in 1997, at the Ohio State game, I lingered to drink in the feeling of victory... and then I bolted to get home to see the Florida-Florida State game, which wound up being a barnburner (and may or may not have concluded with me running aimlessly around the house yelling "We're Number 1!" to my cats). In the years when Texas-Oklahoma was a huge rivalry, I missed almost every one of them due to being at Michigan Stadium. It was tough.

Now, technology has improved. Well-to-do people with RVs can have Satellite TV hooked up in the lot. Less well-to-do can stream on mobile. Still tricky, though. You can't flip easily between ESPN and CBS in the 3:30 pm time slot on an iphone with 25% battery that has to last you until 11:30pm, it just doesn't work.

I'll take this on seriously: I think it would be fine for the MSU game, even fun. They're a rival, the late game would be a great television feature, the crowds would be insane. Sure.

But Michigan-Ohio State is one of the great institutions of sport. The history. The athletes. The uniforms. The marching bands. The fans. The colors. The sounds. It is unequalled in American Sports. It is magnificent.

It is meant to be played at noon or 1pm on the last Saturday of the regular season. It should be that way forever.

They played at 1pm in 2006. Every network just ceded the entire afternoon to The Game. It was awesome, except for that late hit thingy.

My memory suggests that the only exception to noon or 1pm since 1968 (and presumably the years before that as well) was a 3:30 kick in 1985, the game that Kolesar caught that clinching TD bomb from what's-his-name in the dark.
