Nick Sheridan, QB coach in Pizza Bowl tonight

Former Michigan QB Nick Sheridan Connects as Coach

Nice to see the winning QB of the 2008 Minnesota game progressing in his coaching career. He'll be coaching tonight for the WKU Hilltoppers before doing the George Jefferson thing to South Florida next year.

I'm sorry but those comments truly piss me off.  He was a freaking walk-on who did the best he could with whatever ability he had to try and help the team.  It's not his fault he wasnt blessed with much God-given talent and it's certainly not his fault he was the best option we had at the time to run the offense the coaching staff decided to run.

He deserves our respect for the service he gave to the University and the football team.  I am really sick of people knocking him and making jokes about him because he wasn't very good.

He did what he could with what he had and that's more than you can say about most people in this world.

So by the reasoning should we flame or "break out in hives" if somebody mentions Tractor Traylor, Daniel Horton,  Dugan Fife, or anybody else that played for the basketball team during their dark period? As others have mentioned, the kid played and worked his ass off in an impossible situation, and he didn't cave in despite the negativity.  But since he didn't win games, or make the SC top ten plays of the week, people want to throw shit on his name, and call people butthurt for being called out on it. Really fucking pathetic.

I don't know if Tractor Traylor is the best example there.  He and the other three that took money from Ed Martin deliberately broke the rules, and ultimately our program paid the price for it.  Guys like Horton had to suffer because of their actions.

I can understand being upset at the players who took money from Martin, or at a guy who got in trouble and was kicked out of the program.  Players like that did not hold up their end of the bargain as student-athletes, which is to go to school, represent it well, and follow the rules.  But anyone who does those things and just happens to not be a great player should not receive any ill will.

Brian Cook deserves much of the blame for the constant assassination of a Michigan player. His "Sheridan = Death" was an intentional cheap shot of a particularly classless nature, and it was quickly adopted by many here at MGoBlog, in attitude if not exact wording.

Now, if you make an observation about a player, and attempt to bring it to conversation here you get negged, flaimbaited, called a troll, etc. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love this blog.......It is my most frequented site outside of voyeu.......well, nevermind that, my point is, the culture on this board has changed even more than the football program itself. People can'ttake jokes, constructive criticism, etc at all. Bill Sheridan is extremely proud of his son and his accomplishments, and as much as everybody on here thinks that what we say can or would change that, it won't. As for how I would feel if my son were a walk on at Michigan and given an oppritunity to represent this university in the slightest way? Well, I get teared up just by thinking of it to be honest. It would be an honor, and I'm sure thats exactly how the Sheridans think of it. Remeber, Brian's running a blog that analyzes The University of Michigan Athletics and the product that they put on the field, court, etc. He is not writing out report card evaluations for 3rd graders. Everybody needs to loosen up a bit.

Brian got away with it because it's his blog, and on any web community you find a bunch of people who parrot whatever the blog author says.

I love 95% of what Brian writes, but there are times when he gets overly emotional and goes too far with his ranting.  His current crusade against David Brandon is an example.  Brandon is running an athletic department that is very successful and profitable.  By most measures, he seems to be successful at his job.  Still, Brian has this almost Pavlovian response to the guy whenever he says or does anything, always assuming the worst about him.  I don't understand exacly what is fueling his fire . . . is it really just because of the alternate football jerseys?  Or is there something going on behind the scenes (like U-M trying to restrict the blog's access) we don't know about?

First off, I didn't read the blog regularly when Sheridan was QBing Michigan, so I reserve the right to be a moron about all of this. That being said...

It seems to me that "Sheridan=Death" is a meme describing what happens when he came in a ballgame. And that's fair. Does any disagree that our reaction when Bellomy was armpunting pick after pick was OPLEASEJUSTMAKEITSTOPNOW? If we weren't allowed to evaluate and react to players' performance, this would be a pretty lame blog.

The difference in this situation is that "Sheridan=Death" doesn't strike me as saying anything about Nick Sheridan the person. "I hate Sheridan", by contrast, does.

nobody is/has challenged the integrity of Sheridan as a person. Whats being discussed is his skills as a QB. And if we can't dicuss that on this blog, then we might have a bit of an identity problem here.

Yep. Brian's original wording (thanks, MGoSearch!). I think this should make it fairly clear that Sheridan=Death is a strictly football criticism

No offense to a fine young man, but NICK SHERIDAN=DEATH. The decision to start him over Threet, or play him ever while Threet is physically capable of throwing the ball, will go down as the most inexplicable one of the Rodriguez era.

Well. It is pretty meaningless to preface calling someone death with the words "no offense."

If he leaves out that first sentence there is no need to explain anything. The second sentence rightfully puts the blame fully on RichRod for playing a player that in the words Lloyd Carr "should never have played QB" during a game for the UM. For whatever reason, RichRod purposefully put Sheridan in a situation in which he did not have the skills to succeed. That decison and not Nick Sheridan equalled death.

Give it to Wheatley!

I used to call him a "blind pie thrower". Reason being it appeared he would shot put passes into double coverage with his eyes closed. That may have been a little harsh due to his walkon status and the richrod situation. He was only doing the best he could and you gotta feel good about this story. Hope he has continued success.

Guys like Sheridan, Demens, Navarre, etc. who do everything that could be asked of them and persevere through unfair criticism - as college kids - automatically become favorite players of mine.

Never understood the harshness towards Navarre. He only QB'ed Michgan to an outright Big Ten Championship in 2003, blew up the record books in terms of the passing and total offense side and was a class act.

That 2003 offense was arguably the most prolific we've ever had here. Set countless amounts of records on all fronts.

Him being thrown out there a year before he was ready and should have been (really for part of a season, TWO years before he should have been). Losing two years in a row back when it was unheard of didn't help. (though the one hr was awful in should have been Henson at QB).

But his worst "crime" was playing after '97 Griese-Brady-Henson. Before '97 he'd have looked awesome. Most put upon Michigan player I've ever seen. Could combine Sheridan and Denard and it still wouldn't be as much. Guy deserves an apology from the amichigan community.

Personally I'm a big fan of branding anyone who hates Sheridan as a Walmart Wolverine who has no grasp of history or context with relation to the program. Sheridan was a walk on, thus no scholarship hit, who clearly came to Michigan to prepare for a future as a coach.  His father was coaching in the NFL and he was a local kid.  His expected future was to lurk at the bottom of the depth chart, al la Cone and Kennedy, while getting experience on running a high level program is run.

Most programs have people like this on the roster, kids who understand the game but lack the physical talents.  They function as player coaches (useful due to coach-player interaction limits) and one day might end up as the head of some prep school that funnels us talent.  Or they end up in the NFL and draft our players, making us look better.  While a walk on he was basically a free player who had been prepped by a NFL coach, his father.  That has significant value to the scout team.

Sheridan of course was safely on the bottom of the depth chart, performing in the expected role, with 5* Mallet and 4* Threet in front of him.  Until of course the fateful day that he was made the starter in the system he did not have the physical talent to run.

Certain morons need to focus on the fact that Sheridan was not the mastermind of the 2008 offense and they need to learn to focus their dislike at the circumstances and individuals that led to our scout team QB becoming the top guy on the depth chart.

Not the only Ex-Wolverine on the staff.  Former walk-on TE Jon Bills is also a graduate assistant.  You might remember him for the automobile accident that ended his career that his cousin Mark Moundros was also a part of.  Great to see both of these guys ascending the coaching ladder; Sheridan moving with Taggart shows he's highly thought of.  Bills already getting his feet wet and showing that the accident is behind him.  Good for both of them.  Go Blue, and I'm a 'Tops fan tonight.

Great compliment from Lance Guidry, and I will say that it is great to see Nick move up the ladder this quickly. Always great to see a former Wolverine (and Hornet as well, for those of us who are also Saline alums) do well. Best of luck to him tonight and at South Florida in the new year.
