Nice (not great) article on David Harris in the Sunday NYT.

Page One of the Sunday Sports section, top of the page, above the fold.  A really nice story about the character and quietness of Harris.  Also what a technically brilliant linebacker he is.  The leading tackler on the NFL's leading defense in 2009.

It is, as I say, a really nice profile for Harris and his family.  100% nice.  Many details about his growing up in Grand Rapids, his family, etc.

Somehow, however, the entire piece left out the fact that he learned how to play linebacker at the University of Michigan.  So, a nice (not great) story...

In the detailing of almost every tackle he made last year, and because the article featured lots of things Jets fans don't know already (other than that he does most of his talking with his tackles), and maybe because by now it took the Michigan background for granted.  But it didn't leave it out completely:

"Each day, his parents went to work without complaint, his father to a plant that made parts for General Motors and Ford, his mother to an office at a cleaning products company. Harris took the same approach at Michigan and as an N.F.L. rookie."

In the print edition, which I read, the "Michigan" mention is in the bottom line, at the very bottom of the page, in the continuation on Page Six.  I missed it.  Thanks for the correction in any event.  Like I say, it is in general a very, very nice profile on Harris.

It puts me in a quandary. I always root for NFL teams with UM players on them, so it would be natural for me to be a Jets fan as long as Harris is with them. The problem is that I think Rex Ryan is as just as big of a jackass as his father ever was, maybe more. Normally, I'd root for Ryan to go 0-16.

play in GR when he played for Ottawa Hills.  I never thought that he'd be a player he is right now because he didn't impress me much.  Kevin Grady(as a freshman in high school) ran him over and by him with ease.  All I remember is he is a big LB who can run, but didn't impress me much on that game.

Glad to see him working hard to get better and become one of the better 3-4 MIKE in the league.  He's repping GR very well.

A Butkus finalist by the time he was a Senior.  Which is why his career here would have been a nice mention.  Not only that; but if not for Jim Herrmann having signed on as Jets' linebacking coach and knowing Harris, they might not have drafted Harris when they did.
