I liked this part:

Speight has the following 12-game stat projection: 2,625 yards, 24 touchdowns and 5 interceptions -- with a completion rate of 63 percent. If that holds, Michigan's going to take it every time. Jake Rudock didn't hit 10 touchdowns until the 10th game of the season in 2015. Speight's already there.

I was so stunned I looked it up and it's true. Rudock had 8 TDs through 9 games. He had 6 TDs against Indiana to bring his total to 14. He then had 2 at Penn State, one against Ohio State, and 3 against Florida to increase his season total to 20 TDs in 13 games.

Maybe Speight will explode in the second half of the season.

Something no one has talked about: Jehu Chesson has only 197 yards receiving and 0 TDs through 5 games.

But don't panic. Chesson had 106 yards and 0 TDs through 5 games last season. In fact, Chesson didn't break 200 yards until Minnesota. It was in that game he caught his first TD of the season. (He finished with 2 TDs against the Gophers.)

Haven't they been reading mgoblog?! Speight is eh, merely serviceable, and only a little bit better than ok. We as Michigan deserve, are entitled to, only 5* first round epic QB's now that we have Jim Harbaugh as coach.

5 starts in to his college career, plus a road win coming off the bench last season.

I'd say he's off to a terrific start. He wasn't a 5* future NFL'r coming out of HS. His growth since enrolling on campus has been huge, and he's learned so much from Harbaugh in 2 years.

He will undoubtably do well enough to keep us undefeated heading into The Game. I think he has enough "gamer" in him + Harbaugh where we won't lose that game this year. Kids got a little chip on his shoulder, and we all know how dangerous that can be.

...by the number of people who don't believe in Speight. I guess I'm in the minority but I'm pleased with his performance so far.

Even players like Andrew Luck, DeShaun Watson, and Lamar Jackson needed a year of starting to get settled into the college game. Look up their first year stats as starters.

There are exceedingly few players who excel as first time starters but it's an illustrious list with players like Cam Newton and Jameis Winston in recent memory.

I have faith in the kid but projecting out the first 5 games results over a season where competition is going to massively increase seems a bit disingenuous. He has things to correct but is hanging in there. Any improvement and then we will be back for sure.

Looking at the schedule and I'm not seeing this "massive competition increase". Wisconsin is very likely our 2nd toughest game this year, Colorado and UCF would probably be competitive (at worst) with everyone else remaining aside from OSU. Who's the toughest opponent after OSU? Indiana, MSU or Maryland? Illinois, Iowa and Rutgers are awful.

MSU's defense can create some challenges.

Speight was 1-11 on third downs against Wisconsin.  Not good, Bob.

There is a lot of work to be done before we start penciling in the CFP.

Wisconsin is not a complete team.  Our defense was great, but had Wiscy had a better offense (hint, hint, Ohio State does), we would have been in trouble.

1-11 on third downs is not going to cut it in Columbus or even East Lansing.

Speight only plays against the opposing defense. Wisconsin is arguably the toughest he'll see all year and there's only one other opponent on the schedule who's D looks intimidating. You can't pick out the most damning stat, against the toughest opposition yet (and possibly all year) in a discussion about extrapolating stats.

At the game against Wisconsin I felt his passes and decison-making were both a bit wobbly -- then he hit Darboh in the endzone and all was forgiven. Maybe he can do that a couple more times against OSU. . .
